The Bishop of Lincoln writes: As I write this, I’ve just returned from General Synod where we were discussing the ordination of women as bishops. Whilst everyone agrees it will happen, there remain major differences about exactly how to enable the move. During the de-bate, I was very impressed with the nature and quality of the contributions from people who disagreed so profoundly about something.

Being able to disagree honestly about something is very important – as Voltaire said, “I disagree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.” The concept of free speech is one that underpins democracy.

I came across these words from St Augustine of Hippo recently, carved in beau-tiful calligraphy on the floor of a chapel:

‘We come to God not by navigation, but by love’.

It seems to me these words have something to say to us about how we handle disagreements in general, not just in the church. Rather than being angry and looking for someone or something to blame when something goes wrong, we would do better to look for God's providence.

Of course God allows things to go wrong and for human beings to make mis-takes, but the grace of God is always available for us to discover his will for the future. For me this means changing the language of our discourse from one of suspicion and mistrust to one of mutual respect and trust.

To use Augustine’s metaphor, the method of plotting an accurate course across the ocean which we initiate and in which we are in control is not God’s way. In-stead God invites us to respond to his love by building new relationships charac-terised by mutual respect and trust. This is not easy, but it is a path worth taking. If we can listen and understand views of those with whom we disagree, we can humbly explore the way God is calling us to walk.

Caythorpe Festival Singers Summer Concert Many thanks to all who came and supported the Summer Concert at St. Vincent' s on Fri 19th July. After hearing the singers, conducted by Mr Stuart Freshney with Mrs Robbie Squire on piano and Mr Tony Kingston on guitar, refreshments were served for all to enjoy. The debut performance of the newly formed Barber Shop Quartet of Mr Victor Snaith, Mr Geoff Cottingham, Mr John Scott and Mr Andrew Cottingham is one that will stay in the memory a long time. While being great fun to both take part in and to be entertained with, these evenings also help to raise funds for our magnificent parish church and once again you did yourselves proud by raising £235.

Many Thanks Jo Russell

Caythorpe Open Gardens On behalf of St. Vincent's Church, I would like to thank all those who helped on June 23rd to raise such a magnificent sum of £1450 towards church funds. The garden owners had worked tirelessly and the gardens were a joy to behold! The plant sale did very well, many thanks to all who contributed. The tea and cake makers were kept busy in the church, as were the Cream Teas in the Old Schoolroom! Many people enjoyed the Art and Photo-graphic exhibitions and quite a few pictures and cards were sold. Lastly, we could not have done it without the general public who gave so generously.

Thank you again, Ann Russell

District Councillor’s Report by Bob Sampson 01400 273 873/07766387872, [email protected]

LCC Highways continue with their repair programme in and around the Parish although there remains a long schedule of outstanding works. Most recently they completed the long-awaited resurfacing works in Eastcliffe Square and Chapel Lane. LCC Highways have just announced that a further £2million has been allocated towards this financial years repair works programme. As from the 1st July 2013 SKDC are operating a revised refuse collection service throughout the District.Caythorpe and Frieston are not affected by revised collec-tion days, however the new working methods have resulted in SKDC requiring householders to put all their bins out by 7.30am on the day of collection through-out the District. Be warned, due to LCC Highways road works being undertaken within Grantham and the recently announced closure of Belton Lane Bridge on Monday 22nd July, linking Belton Lane to and Manthorpe Road, there will be severe delays entering and leaving Grantham via this route. At a recent briefing about the Electoral Review of South Kesteven being con-ducted by the Local Government Boundary Commision for England, the body recommended that the Council size be reduced from 58 to 55 members with ef-fect from May 2015 (the next Council elections). The Commission is now inviting proposals on the future Warding patterns throughout the District The Commission proposes electoral arrangements for the District which will:-

Ensure each local councillor represents a similar number of voters. Reflects the identity and interests of local communities. Promote effective and convenient Local Government.

Thereby a pattern of Wards is created that reflects the Council’s future electoral cycle and projected increase in the population up to 2019

SKDC have prepared it’s proposed revisions to the Warding boundaries to reflect each of the 55 Councillors being responsible for 2073 persons (+ or – 10%). Under the revised arrangements there is a loss of two Town Wards and One Rural Ward with the proposed boundary adjustments. All Wards with boundary changes will also be renamed as part of the proposals.

The proposal is for Heath Ward to be expanded to take in Fenton, Hough on the Hill, and Stubton, and accordingly to rename the Ward “Grange Ward”

The proposals have been approved in full Council, they will shortly be submitted to the Local Boundary Commission for England, firstly to review and then send out for a 12 week public consultation before the Commission submits it’s final

recommendations in December 2014, thereafter implementation will require an Order of Parliament for it to take effect from the date of the District Election in 2015.

Finally, having sold our property in Fulbeck, Ann and I will be moving temporarily into Caythorpe for approximately 6 months, before, hopefully, moving back to Fulbeck in 2014.

My future Open Surgery Dates are:-

Saturday 31st August 2013, Fulbeck Village Hall 11.30 – 2.30pm Saturday 26th October 2013 Caythorpe Village Hall 11.30 – 2.30pm

Congratulations to a High Flying 90 year old who takes everything in his stride!

Alsace Lorraine - Canal de la Marne au Rhin (continued) It was a wet and thundery night and when we got up it was still raining so we stayed where we were while the worst of the rain passed over. It was still raining slightly when we set off later but not cold. Leaving our moorings we went through a porte de garde. This is a single set of lock gates which are closed when the river crossing the canal is in flood, but oth-erwise are open for boats to pass through. There then followed the uncanny sensation of negotiating a cross roads on the canal. The canal was going al-most due north-south, the River Ill east-west. One almost expected traffic lights. There was a warning in the Guide to watch out for the cross current following heavy rain. As we passed over the current was hardly noticeable so we avoided the indignity of being swept into the Rhine. After this we had three more locks before we arrived at the Le Boat Base at Boofzheim. At Boofzheim we hoped to get fuel and get a couple of niggling problems with the boat fixed. The problems were:-

A constant sound of trickling water in the galley area and after cabin. Strange alarms and buzzing from the electrics even when we have been

stopped for some hours. We moored stern-to in Boofzheim base which was empty except for one other boat which appeared to be undergoing repairs. On arrival we were greeted by the cheerful Charley who though he did not speak much (if any) English soon got down to settling our needs. He topped us up with fuel and water and while this was going on two Gendarmes appeared on the jetty. Our initial thought was that No 2 son – who had some connection with the police in UK) was playing games, however it turned out that some ‘yoofs’ had attempted to vandalise the nearby lock and ‘enquiries were being made’. Once Boofzheim’s answer to Maigret had left Charley turned his attention to our other problems. The trickle was instantly diagnosed a being caused by a loose jubilee clips allowing water to drip into the bilge to then be pumped out every so often by the automatic bilge pump. The alarms and buzzes proved more difficult. While 1st Lt remained on board to help Charley Captain and CCBW set off to do some much needed shopping. Apart from food and wine one of the most press-ing needs was to support Captain and CCBW’s nicotine habit. Bluntly we were running out of fags! Charley told us that there was un supermarché in the village which was about 1 km away. So armed with shopping bags, (Waitrose - Newark and Lidl - Stras-bourg) and saying to 1st Lt ‘we may be gone a while’ the gallant pair set off. The cool of the morning’s rain had long gone and a sweltering heat beat down. One kilometre to the village, Oui!, One kilometre through the village, Oui! and then one more bloody kilometre to le supermarché oui certainment! When we reached it the store proved to be large with just about every thing we needed – except fags! This was surprising. During our earlier trips to La Belle France we had found that the Tabac section of stores we had visited tended to dwarf all ex-cept the wine department – and the lower bowel section of the Pharmarcie of course!

Page 19: Produced and Sponsored by St. Vincent’s Church, Caythorpe ...parishes.lincolnshire.gov.uk/Files/Parish/58/Aug13.pdf · Robbie Squire on piano and Mr Tony Kingston on guitar, refreshments

19

So laden with our supplies – why do nice things like wine and beer have to be so heavy – we set off back. The merciless sun beat down as we trekked across the barren landscape – my Afrikaner ancestors would have been proud of me. Finally after several stops we made it back to the base. When we arrived Charley was just about to go out to get a spare part for the boat he was working on so Captain explained the ‘fag crisis’ and Charley offered to take him to the nearby town. Leaving CCBW to pack away our shopping Captain set off with Charley. We drove several miles through small villages before getting into an industrial area where Charley turned the van into the forecourt of a tractor dealership where, grabbing a rather frayed looking fan belt, he disappeared in the direction of the spares department.. Captain kicked his heels outside in the sun until Charley re-appeared muttering about fournisseur imbecile – useless suppliers. We then went back the way we had come, then suddenly turned off into the middle of a small town and with a flourish Charley drew up outside a Tabac. Captain went inside, bought the much needed ‘weeds’ and climbed back into the van. Throughout this journey Captain and Charley chatted about life in general. As we passed one village Charley pointed that it was where he lived. This moved the conversation onto children and families and Charley proudly announced he had seven children, but hastened to add ‘mais pas avec la même femme!’ –but not with the same wife! While Captain and CCBW had been away the strange alarm from the engine system has manifested itself again. Although Charley was able to give us some pointers to lessening the likelihood of recurrence such as keeping a key in the upper steering position ignition switch which appeared faulty the problem was

never totally resolved. Ancient electrics with too many earths in the circuit can often have strange manifestations. As a Petty Officer Electrician in Captain’s sub-marine past once said – “There are so many earths there Sir, we could grow mustard and cress on it!”. Funnily until that time Captain has not realised that there was an ignition switch at the upper steering position but had stopped and started the engine form below. As we had already discovered during our grand trek it was a very hot afternoon. 1st Lt stated that when CCBW had stepped

into a shower on her return from the trek the sizzle of evaporating water a scared the ducks. Once we had cooled and slaked our thirst we sat and rested in the sunshine. The humidity of the day and some threatening clouds in the distance foretold of thunder.

Caythorpe & District WI – July We all listened with rapt attention as the long and eventful life of Queen Victoria was relived in the first person to great effect by Betty Elmer. Dressed in the Queen’s widow’s weeds, lace and tiara she looked re-markably like Victoria in her later years and the intimate ‘chat’ brought her alive as no lecture could have done. Victoria was a strong willed char-acter, who knew from childhood she was special and could never be pushed around, particularly by the ambitious Sir John Conroy who aspired to be the power behind the throne. One of the first things she did on her accession was to pay of all her fa-ther’s debts. She insisted that all her clothes should be of British manufac-ture and when she married Albert they decided they had to dispel the dis-solute way of life of previous generations and give a good example of a stable, family life. With 41 grandchildren and 87 great grandchildren scat-tered throughout the royal families of Europe she was known as the Grandmother of Europe. At the beginning of her reign in 1873 the country had a predominantly agricultural economy. By the time she died in 1901 it was an industrial one having experienced and explosion of technological inventions, medi-cal and geographical discoveries. She was the first person to send a mes-sage round the world by telegraph. Thanking Betty, Caroline Long said there were times during the evening when she could have believed she really was Queen Victoria. The competition for an item of Victoriana was won by Joan Webb with her family album, 2nd Marylyn Mason and 3rd Daphne Page. Flower of the Month was won by Mavis Coxon, 2nd Marylyn Mason, 3rd Daphne Page. The raffle was won by Janet Norman. President, Janet Hoddell, thanked everyone for having made the the 60th anniversary party so successful. She said she had received many mes-sages of thanks from former members, and welcomed Rita Rigby back into the fold!

Caythorpe and District Garden Society The weather could not have been better for the society’s summer social which was held in Jean and Gerry Allen’s garden in Cay-thorpe. Despite a difficult spring there was plenty of colour in the flower borders, contrasting with the varied shades of green from mature trees planted some 40 years ago by the original owner of the property. The garden has clearly been influenced by the talks given at the society’s regular monthly meetings: as well as mixed borders filled with a mix of perennials and shrubs, there is a border filled with a selection of ornamental grasses, a shady area planted with a variety of ferns, a patio with potted foliage plants and a bed of mints of different flavours that were all inspired by visiting speak-ers. The evening was warm enough to sit outside until dusk, and around 40 members enjoyed a walk round the garden, a picnic, for which everyone brought food to share, and a glass or two of wine. A very pleasant way to spend a summer evening. The August meeting will be held at Carlton Scroop village hall on13th August at 7:30, when Ian Cooke will give a talk on ‘Climbers and Wall Shrubs’. Visitors (£2) and new members (£6 for the rest of 2013) will be most welcome. Just come along - perhaps you too will find inspiration! For further information about the society contact David Fidler on 01400 272630. The Caythorpe Show will be held in Caythorpe village hall on Au-gust 31st and anyone can enter. Why not pick up a schedule from the Post office, Spar or Chip Shop in Caythorpe or the Leadenham Farm Shop and show off your garden produce and handicraft skills.

As the August meeting is the outing to Skipton the next meeting at Cay-thorpe Village Hall at 7.30pm is on September 12th when either an Estee Lauder or No.7 representative from Boots will present ‘Make yourself Beautiful.’ How can you resist!

Parish Council News. August 2013 Parish Council meeting The following is a brief summary of the main items discussed at the meeting held on July 10th 2013. Policing in the community .. At a recent meeting held with Mr Alan Hardwick, Lincolnshire's Police and Crime Commissioner, we were very pleased to note that the Rural Beat Office on Old Lincoln Road will continue to be used and not disposed of as had been mooted. It was agreed that the Neighbourhood Policing team will be holding a weekly surgery in the building on a Sunday morning when residents will be able to discuss local issues and crime prevention tips. The dates and times are being displayed on all local notice boards as well as in the Post Office. A meeting is to take place with the Inspector responsible for our area in order to discuss whether or not we can establish a small team of local vol-unteers who can act as a conduit with the Police. We very much welcome the decision taken and the initiatives that are being put in place. Pavements and footpaths.. A reminder please that over hanging vegetation from your garden causes problems for those residents with prams, push chairs, wheel chairs and for those whose vision is impaired. Please have a quick look to ensure that your trees and shrubs are not giving rise to a problem. In addition the parking of vehicles on pavements and footpaths gives rise to similar problems. High Street parking and speeding.. A small working group is being estab-lished in order to see if we can address the problems of both congestion and speeding. If you have any comments on this issue please do not hesitate to con-tact any of the above members of your Parish Council.

Bruce Nelson. Chairman.
