Understanding Menopause and Perimenopause

That embarrassing rush of heat that has you opening windows, peeling off clothes, or kicking off the covers. Waking up at 2 am, 3 am, and again at 4:30 am, or lying awake for hours. Walking into a room for something and not having the slightest idea what it was.

For many women, these are just a few of the not-so-subtle reminders that menopause is here or approaching.

The Transition Every woman’s transition through menopause is different. Some women have few symptoms or only very mild ones. Other women find the quality of their lives significantly affected by changes in mood, memory, and productivity, and by uncomfortable physical symptoms like hot flashes.

PerimenopausePerimenopause is the term used to define the time of shifting and declining hormone levels as a woman approaches menopause and her last menstrual period. Symptoms may begin as early as a woman’s mid-30’s, or perimenopause may go by unnoticed.

During perimenopause, a women may experience irregularity in her menstrual periods. PMS may intensify or become a problem for the first time in a woman's life. Symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, insomnia, and changes in libido may begin to appear.

MenopauseMenopause is defined as a woman’s last menstrual period. The average age of menopause is 51, and a woman is considered postmenopausal when she has not had a period for 12 consecutive months.

Common symptoms of perimenopause

• Irregular periods• Hot flashes/night sweats• Insomnia• Crying for no reason• Anxiety• Irritability, mood swings • Increased bone loss

Common symptoms and concerns of menopause

• Hot flashes/night sweats• Insomnia• Loss of libido• Vaginal dryness• Anxiety• Difficulty concentrating• Memory lapses• Incontinence• Weight gain• Aching muscles and joints• Osteoporosis

Your Personal Symptom ChartKeeping a Personal Symptom Chart is one of the easiest and best ways to determine the pattern and severity of symptoms related to menopause. For greatest accuracy, fill in your Personal Symptom Chart on a daily basis — we recommend you set aside a specific time each day. After you’ve carefully charted your symptoms for two to three months, discuss your findings with your healthcare provider. Together, you’ll be able to see the pattern in your symptoms and decide on the most appropriate treatment for you.

Evaluating Your Symptoms

For most women, more than one-third of life still lies ahead after menopause. At this time of life, it is more important than ever for women to take care of themselves with a self-care approach that includes attention to diet and exercise.

Whether a woman chooses hormone therapy or not, the right nutritional supplement is essential for helping to manage menopause symptoms and support bone strength and cardiovascular health. Perimenopausal women whose symptoms are primarily those of PMS, may find ProCycle® PMS most helpful. When symptoms are primarily those of menopause or menopause has occurred, ProCycle® Gold is the formula to choose.

Procycle® Gold for Symptom ManagementDoctor recommended ProCycle® Gold was formulated by pharmacists to provide the specific vitamins and minerals in the specific amounts shown to benefit women during perimenopause, menopause and beyond.

ProCycle® Gold is a balanced formula with complete B-complex vitamins, vitamin E, folic acid, calcium, and the nutrients you need for calcium absorption.

uFor hot flashes, studies show that taking 400 IU to 800 IU of Vitamin E daily can reduce the occurrence and severity of hot flashes and night sweats. Because hot flashes deplete our bodies of B vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, and potassium, supplementing these vitamins and minerals is also important.

uFor strong bones, adequate calcium (1000 mg) in approximately a 2:1 ratio with magnesium (600mg) is essential. Vitamin D is also important for calcium absorption. Boron supports bone health by activating vitamin D and estrogen.

uFor a healthy heart, Folic acid is known to lower the high homocystine levels associated with heart disease and should be taken along with vitamin B6 and B12, which also influence homocystine levels. Studies have shown that vitamin E can reduce the risk of heart attack and that magnesium may be beneficial to the cardiovascular system.

uFor healthy skin and vaginal dryness, vitamin A promotes the health of the skin and mucous membranes, protecting against infections and roughness. Vitamin E has been shown to help with vaginal dryness. Sometimes called the anti-wrinkle vitamin, Vitamin C helps to maintain collagen. Selenium and copper are important antioxidants for skin and tissues.

uFor anxiety, fatigue , and depression and fatigue, the B-complex vitamins help to ease the many emotional difficulties associated with menopause. Extra vitamin B6 is typically necessary for patients on Hormone Therapy (HT).

Powerful Menopause Nutrients

Vitamin ESometimes called the “menopausal vitamin” because it may have chemical activities similar to estrogen, vitamin E may relieve hot flashes and vaginal dryness as well as psychological symptoms of menopause. Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women. We know from the Nurses Health Study that women who took vitamin E over a two-year period reduced their risk of fatal heart attacks by 40%.

Calcium/Magnesium/Vitamin D/Boron CombinationWhen it comes to strong, healthy bones, the synergistic effect of several vitamins and minerals is important. While calcium is essential for bone formation and maintenance, more and more studies are showing the importance of magnesium for bone mineral density (BMD). In fact, a total dietary program emphasizing magnesium instead of calcium megadosing is recommended. (See page 6.) Vitamin D is also important for stimulating bone mineralization and the intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. Boron is a trace nutrient thought to activate vitamin D.

Folic Acid It is widely known that folic acid can lower the high levels of homocystine associated with two of the biggest concerns for postmenopausal women, heart disease and osteoporosis. Folic acid should be taken along with vitamin B6 and B12 which also influence homocystine levels.

uFor insomnia, calcium and magnesium produce calming effects on the brain and are are essential for normal sleep.

As with any multivitamin-mineral supplement, it is important to take ProCycle Gold daily, not just when symptoms appear. ProCycle Gold is best if taken two tablets twice daily.

ProCycle Gold is formulated with the highest quality ingredients. Its all-natural coating contains no carcinogenic dyes.

ProCycle® Gold's Nutritional Formula Is Clinically ProvenA Total Dietary Program Emphasizing Magnesium Instead of CalciumEffect on the Mineral Density of Calcaneous Bone in Postmenopausal Women on Hormonal Therapy

Guy E Abraham, MD and Harinder Grewal, MD

The use of calcium supplementation for the management of primary postmenopausal osteoporosis (PPMO) has increased significantly in the past few years. A review of the published data does not support calcium megadosing during postmenopause. Controlled studies showed no significant effect of calcium intake on mineral density of trabecular bone and a slight effect on cortical bone. Since PPMS is predominantly due to demineralization of trabecular bone, there is no justification for calcium megadosing in postmenopausal women. Soft tissue calcification is a serious risk factor during calcium megadoisng under certain conditions. A total dietary program emphasizing magnesium instead of calcium for the management of PPMO takes into account the available date on the effects of magnesium, lifestyle and dietary habits on bone integrity and PPMO.

When this dietary program was tested on 19 postmenopausal women on hormonal replacement therapy who were compared to 7 control postmenopausal women, a significant increase in mineral bone density (BMD) of the calcaneous bone was observed within one year. 15 of the 19 women had BMD below the spine fracture threshold before treatment; within one year, only 7 of them had BMD values below that threshold.

ProCycle® Gold + Diet + Exercise = Symptom Management

Supplementing the right nutrients in the right amounts with ProCycle® Gold can go a long way toward managing menopause symptoms. Diet and exercise are also important. Just a few small changes can help to increase energy, reduce stress, and keep symptoms to a minimum.

1. Eat Smaller Meals More Often— Instead of “three squares,” try eating three small meals and three protein-oriented snacks. Frequent small meals keep your blood sugar stable, avoid energy highs and lows and can help

keep unwanted pounds away.

2. Eat Wholesome— A balanced, wholesome, and high-nutrient diet with lots of whole grains, leafy greens and other vegetables, lean protein foods, and fish with Omega-3 fatty acids like salmon can help reduce symptoms. Foods to avoid include salty and high fat meats, high-fat cheeses, white bread, salty or sweet snacks, caffeinated drinks, and alcohol.

3. Avoid Food Stressors— Food stressors, irritants, and stimulants can make symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia worse. These include foods high in refined sugars and fats, processed or chemical foods, caffeine drinks (coffee, tea, colas), alcohol, and chocolate products. To help with insomnia, avoid large meals before bedtime. For help with hot flashes, avoid foods that are spicy or acidic.

4. Get Physical and Reduce Stress— Moderate exercise is great for overall fitness and helps reduce stress. Exercise raises HDL (“good cholesterol”) and reduces triglycerides (fats) in the blood. It builds strong bones, increases heart and lung capacity, and reduces fluid retention. It also causes the release of endorphins, nature’s mood elevators, and increases oxygen and blood flow to muscles, reducing tension. Weight bearing exercise is particularly important to keep bones healthy and strong. Research shows even a moderate amount of weight-bearing exercise like walking or jogging for 30 minutes, three or four times a week can help. Yoga is a great way to keep your entire body supple and relax your mind at the same time.

“Feel like yourself again.”

ProCycle® goldmenopause formula

“I started using ProCycle® Gold ten years ago after hearing women at work talk about how miserable hot flashes were making them. I didn’t want that to be me.

A coworker gave me my first bottle of ProCycle Gold. The product information said it had the level of vitamins and minerals appropriate for my age group and could help me avoid hot flashes and other menopause symptoms. Even more important to me, were the nutrients ProCycle has for bone health. I have a form of asthma and take steroids that make bone density a concern, so I decided to give it a try. I can’t say ProCycle instantly cured me of anything, but ten years later, I’ve never had hot flashes and my bone tests have all been positive — without taking hormones. They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I’d have to agree!” – Mary M, Eau Claire, WI
