// DETERMINING COOLING REQUIREMENTS:

To determine cooling capacity for a particular application, the following can be used as a rough guide:

Insulated areas: Provide 1 ton (12,000 BTU) of cooling capacity per 400 sq. ft. of surface area.

Uninsulated areas: Provide 1 ton (12,000 BTU) of cooling capacity per 100 to 200 sq. ft. of surface area.

Number of people present and the presence of equipment that generates heat will need to be taken

into consideration when determining requirements.

// WATER DAMAGE RESTORATION:

Two to three air changes per hour (ACH) are recommended for water damage restoration efforts.

1. Calculate the volume of the building in cubic feet (L x W x H).

2. Calculate the cubic square feet (CSF) for one air change (volume divided by 60).

3. Multiply the above number by two or three, depending on conditions.

// INDUSTRIAL CONDENSATION PREVENTION:

In this application, desiccant dehumidifiers should be used in combination with air conditioning units.

Dehumidifier flow should be approximately one-half of the air conditioner flow. 400 SCFM should be

used per one ton of AC capacity.

// INDUSTRIAL PREPARATION AND SURFACE COATINGS:

Temporary dehumidification of the inside of tanks that are being prepared for painting or industrial

coating eliminates the potential for condensation.

Sizing for Volume:

1. Calculate the volume of the tank in cubic feet (3.14 x Radius2 x H).

2. Calculate the SCFM for one air change (Volume divided by 60).

3. Calculate the dehumidification capacity required. (SCFM x ACH).

Sizing for Leakage:

1. Calculate the leakage in square feet from manholes and/or vents.

2. Calculate the dehumidification capacity required (leakage x 250 FPM).

Desiccant Dehumidifier A hygroscopic substance used as a drying agent, it absorbs water and is used to remove moisture; a drying agent. DX DX Unit Direct Expansion system. Evaporator The part of a refrigeration system in which the refrigerant absorbs heat and changes from a liquid to a gas. Generator A device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. GPP Grains per pound - used in dehumidification terms. Hz Hertz A unit of frequency equal to one cycle per second. IQ Instrument Quality Air Treated Compressed air from an oil-flooded compressor. After cooled, filtered air. k Kilo Metric prefix for units of measurement equal to thousands (1000 or 103). Generally used to specify a large energy consumption over a specific time interval. Latent Cooling The load is a measure of the amount of energy that is necessary to dehumidify the air in a building. NEMA National Electrical Manufacturers Association - sets standards to facilitate understanding between the manufacturers and the users of electrical products. Overload A load in excess of the design limit for a circuit. Parallel Circuit A circuit with two or more loads (or sources) connected such that all have the same voltage but different currents. Each load can be operated independent of the others. Parallel sources should have equal voltage ratings. Phase A time relationship between two electrical quantities. Polarity For electrical charge, the indication of a charge as either positive (+) or negative (-).
