The Alum Shale Member of the Whitby Mudstone Formation (Toarcian) at the base of the cliff is overlain disconformably by the Aalenian Dogger (<lm), Saltwick (30m) and Ellerbeck (6m) formations. Towards the base of the non-marine Saltwick Formation a channel sandstone cuts down to the level of the underlying Dogger Formation. The interbedded sandstones, siltstones and mudrocks of the Saltwick Formation contain plant fossils, non-marine bivalves, invertebrate traces and dinosaur footprints.
