Editorial Information
To be published in the Proceedings, a paper must be correct, new, nontrivial, andsignificant. Further, it must be well written and of interest to a substantial number ofmathematicians. Piecemeal results, such as an inconclusive step toward an unprovedmajor theorem or a minor variation on a known result, are in general not acceptablefor publication. Proceedings Editors solicit and encourage publication of worthy papersof length not exceeding 10 published pages. Published pages are the same size as thosegenerated in the style files provided for AMS-LATEX or AMS-TEX .
Very short notes not to exceed two printed pages are also accepted, and appear underthe heading Shorter Notes. Items deemed suitable include an elegant new proof of animportant and well-known theorem, an illuminating example or counterexample, or a newviewpoint on familiar results. New results, if of a brief and striking character, might alsobe acceptable, though in general a paper which is merely very short will not be suitablefor the Shorter Notes department.
As of August 31, 1996, the backlog for this journal was approximately 8 issues. Thisestimate is the result of dividing the number of manuscripts for this journal in the Provi-dence office that have not yet gone to the printer on the above date by the average num-ber of articles per issue over the previous twelve months, reduced by the number of issuespublished in four months (the time necessary for editing and composing a typical issue).
A Consent to Publish and Copyright Agreement is required before a paper will bepublished in this journal. By submitting a paper to this journal, authors certify that theresults have not been submitted to nor are they under consideration for publication byanother journal, conference proceedings, or similar publication.
Information for Authors
Initial submission. Two copies of the paper should be sent directly to the appropriateEditor and the author should keep a copy.
The first page of an article must consist of a descriptive title, followed by an abstract
that summarizes the article in language suitable for workers in the general field (algebra, analysis, etc.). The descriptive title should be short, but informative; useless or vaguephrases such as “some remarks about” or “concerning” should be avoided. The abstract
should be at least one complete sentence, and at most 150 words. Included with thefootnotes to the paper, there should be the 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification rep-resenting the primary and secondary subjects of the article. This may be followed by a listof key words and phrases describing the subject matter of the article and taken from it. Alist of classifications may be found in the annual index of Mathematical Reviews, publishedwith the December issue starting in 1990. Journal abbreviations used in bibliographiesare also listed in the latest Mathematical Reviews annual index. The classifications andthe journal abbreviations are accessible from e-MATH via the World Wide Web throughthe URL http : //www.ams.org/committee/publications/mr-info.html or via FTP toe-math.ams.org (login as anonymous and enter username as password). The classifica-tions are available as a browsable list and the journal abbreviations are available througha search tool. When the manuscript is submitted, authors should supply the editor withelectronic addresses if available. These will be printed after the postal address at the endof each article.
Electronically prepared manuscripts. The AMS encourages submission of elec-tronically prepared manuscripts, with a strong preference for AMS-LATEX submissions. To this end, the Society has prepared AMS-LATEX author packages for each AMS publica-tion. Author packages include instructions for preparing electronic manuscripts, the AMS
Author Handbook, samples, and a style file that generates the particular design specifi-cations of that publication series. Articles properly prepared using the AMS-LATEX stylefile automatically provide hypertext linking to the bibliography and other elements of thearticle for searching electronically on the World Wide Web. Because linking must oftenbe added manually to submissions in other forms of TEX, using AMS-LATEX also reducesthe amount of technical intervention once the files are received by the AMS. This results
in fewer errors in processing and saves the author proofreading time. AMS-LATEX papersalso move more efficiently through the production stream, helping to minimize publishingcosts.
AMS-LATEX is the highly preferred format of TEX, but author packages are also availablein AMS-TEX. Those authors who make use of these style files from the beginning of thewriting process will further reduce their own efforts. Electronically submitted manuscriptsprepared in LATEX or plain TEX are normally not acceptable due to the high amount oftechnical time required to insure that the file will run properly through the AMS in-houseproduction system. LATEX users will find that AMS-LATEX is the same as LATEX withadditional commands to simplify the typesetting of mathematics, and users of plain TEXshould have little difficulty learning AMS-LATEX.
Authors may retrieve an author package from e-MATH via the World Wide Webthrough the URL http : //www.ams.org/tex/ or via FTP to e-math.ams.org (login asanonymous and enter username as password). The author package can also be obtainedfree of charge by sending e-mail to [email protected] (Internet) or from the Publication Divi-sion, American Mathematical Society, P.O. Box 6248, Providence, RI 02940-6248. Whenrequesting an author package, please specify AMS-LATEX or AMS-TEX, Macintosh orIBM (3.5) format, and the publication in which your paper will appear. Please be sure toinclude your complete mailing address.
At the time of submission, authors should indicate if the paper has been prepared usingAMS-LATEX or AMS-TEX and provide the Editor with a paper manuscript that matchesthe electronic manuscript. The final version of the electronic manuscript should be sentto the Providence office immediately after the paper has been accepted for publication. The author should also send the final version of the paper manuscript to the Editor, whowill forward a copy to the Providence office. Editors will require authors to send theirelectronically prepared manuscripts to the Providence office in a timely fashion. Electron-ically prepared manuscripts can be sent via e-mail to [email protected] (Internet) oron diskette to the Electronic Prepress Department, American Mathematical Society, P.O.Box 6248, Providence, RI 02940-6248. When submitting an electronic manuscript, pleasebe sure to include a message indicating in which publication the paper has been accepted. No corrections will be accepted electronically. Authors must mark their changes on theirproof copies and return them to the Providence office. Complete instructions on how tosubmit files are included in the author package.
Electronic graphics. Figures may be submitted to the AMS in an electronic format. The AMS recommends that graphics created electronically be saved in Encapsulated Post-Script (EPS) format. This includes graphics originated via a graphics application as wellas scanned photographs or other computer-generated images.
If the graphics package used does not support EPS output, the graphics file should besaved in one of the standard graphics formats—such as TIFF, PICT, GIF, etc.—ratherthan in an application-dependent format. Graphics files submitted in an application-dependent format are not likely to be used. No matter what method was used to producethe graphic, it is necessary to provide a paper copy to the AMS.
Authors using graphics packages for the creation of electronic art should also avoid theuse of any lines thinner than 0.5 points in width. Many graphics packages allow the userto specify a “hairline” for a very thin line. Hairlines often look acceptable when proofedon a typical laser printer. However, when produced on a high-resolution laser imagesetter, hairlines become nearly invisible and will be lost entirely in the final printing process.
Screens should be set to values between 15% and 85%. Screens which fall outside ofthis range are too light or too dark to print correctly.
TEX files available. Beginning with the January 1992 issue of the Bulletin and theJanuary 1996 issues of Transactions, Proceedings, Mathematics of Computation, and theJournal of the AMS, TEX files can be downloaded from e-MATH, starting from URLhttp : //www.ams.org/journals/. Authors without Web access may request their files atthe address given below after the article has been published. For Bulletin papers publishedin 1987 through 1991 and for Transactions, Proceedings, Mathematics of Computation, and
the Journal of the AMS papers published in 1987 through 1995, TEX files are availableupon request for authors without Web access by sending e-mail to [email protected]
or by contacting the Electronic Prepress Department, American Mathematical Society,P.O. Box 6248, Providence, RI 02940-6248. The request should include the title of thepaper, the name(s) of the author(s), the name of the publication in which the paper hasor will appear, and the volume and issue numbers if known. The TEX file will be sentto the author making the request after the article goes to the printer. If the requestorcan receive Internet e-mail, please include the e-mail address to which the file shouldbe sent. Otherwise please indicate a diskette format and postal address to which a diskshould be mailed. Note: Because TEX production at the AMS sometimes requires extrafonts and macros that are not yet publicly available, TEX files cannot be guaranteed torun through the author’s version of TEX without errors. The AMS regrets that it cannotprovide support to eliminate such errors in the author’s TEX environment.
Any inquiries concerning a paper that has been accepted for publication should be sentdirectly to the Electronic Prepress Department, American Mathematical Society, P.O. Box6248, Providence, RI 02940-6248.
Editors
Authors are requested to send papers directly to the appropriate Editor (the one whosearea of responsibility and expertise, as described below, most closely approximates thesubject field of the manuscript). Only when in doubt about an appropriate Editor, shouldmanuscripts be sent to the Coordinating Editor responsible for the area in mathematicsmost closely connected to the paper. If in doubt about the area, send the manuscript tothe Managing Editor, to whom all other communication about the journal should also beaddressed. (All addresses should include the line “Department of Mathematics”, unlessanother department is indicated.)
