Greetings and Foreword
Dear Colleagues,Welcome to the 2014 issue of - as we see it - world’s most exciting symposium of nonlinear theory
and its applications in science and engineering! On this occasion we are welcoming you to Luzern, just a stone’s throw away from the birthplace of
Switzerland, where some eight hundred years ago a kernel formed with the aim of being a self-organisingparty, free as much as possible from external ‘regulations’. Over the centuries this small kernel grewinto the vibrant and diverse confederation Switzerland is today; we observe a similar exciting growthand diversification occurring in the NOLTA community, and we hope to see this trend continue in futureeditions.
We moreover acknowledge that one hundred and fifty years ago, the first diplomatic relations betweenJapan and Switzerland were established. They continued to have a special value for both countries, irrespective of the boundary conditions: friends once and for all. We would like to thank all those fromboth sides who contribute daily to this. A minor but still very good example is this NOLTA’s 2014organizing committee that is not least fueled by long-term personal friendships.
Our first thanks go to the participants; without their presence, this would all be in vain. The next thankshave to go to the invited speakers. Without their great willingness to join the party the list of plenaryspeakers could not have been so exciting. No less thanks go to the people who worked behind the scene -the reviewers and all those who contributed to the organization of the event. This, in particular, includesthe persons running the famous Bourbaki Kino and the KKL Luzern, who supported the event by lettingus use their facilities under very favorable conditions. Much organizational work was shouldered, infact, by Prof. Yoko Uwate (Tokushima University) and by Florian Gomez (University/ETH Zurich). Thecredits we owe to them are invaluable.
Now enjoy Nolta 2014 and Luzern - not even the weather can stop us now!

Technical Program Co-Chairs’ Message
On behalf of the Technical Program Committee, we warmly welcome you to the 2014 International Sym-posium on Nonlinear Theory and its Applications (NOLTA 2014) held in Luzern, Switzerland, Septem-ber 14-15, 2014. NOLTA is a unique symposium focusing on a wide range of topics in nonlinear scienceand engineering. It has been organized by the Institute of Electronics, Information and CommunicationEngineers (IEICE) in Japan, and held in various countries. As in the past years, NOLTA 2014 providesan opportunity for researchers and students to exchange ideas and experiences.
The technical program of NOLTA 2014 consists of six plenary talks, 161 talks in 35 special sessions, and 75 talks in 15 regular sessions. The plenary talks are given by Prof. Toshimichi Saito (Hosei Uni-versity, Japan), Prof. Leonid Bunimovich (Georgia Institute of Technology, USA), Prof. Johan Suykens(Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium), Prof. Stefano Boccaletti (National Research Council, Italy),Prof. Alain Arneodo (University of Lyon, France), and Prof. Fred Wolf (Max Planck Institute for Dy-namics and Self-Organization, Germany). We are confident that these plenary talks will be stimulatingand informative to all participants. In special sessions, 22 specific topics from the basic theory to experi-mental work and applications will be addressed in depth by experts, researchers and students. In regularsessions, latest results will be presented on a wide variety of topics including chaos, bifurcation, oscil-lations, circuits and systems, communication and sensor networks, control, robotics, complex networks, neural networks, signal processing, and applied mathematics.
We would like to express our sincere thanks to all members of the Technical Program Committee andto the external reviewers for their professional help in the review process. We also express our thanks tothe Special Session Chairs, Prof. Francis Lau (Hong Kong Polytechnical University) and Prof. TetsushiUeta (Tokushima University), and special session organizers. Without their substantial contribution, our technical program would have been much less attractive. Finally, we thank all authors who havesubmitted papers and all of you attending the symposium.
We hope you enjoy the technical program as well as the social program of NOLTA 2014 and you havea great time in Luzern.
