Feeling generally unwell (flu-like symptoms) Fever or temperature (above 38.0 degrees) Swelling: Mild to moderate swelling and/or local inflammation at injection site and/or site of the tissue harvest for up to 4-5 days post-procedure. Ice may be used to reduce local inflammation / swelling. Fluid build up: A “ball-like” collection of fluid and/or blood (seroma or hematoma) are rarely seen, and one should contact his or her healthcare provider if this occurs. Pre and Post Procedural Care

What should I expect after my surgery?

After surgery, you will have 2 small dressings to

the area where the fat was extracted from and

a small dressing to the area where the fat was

injected into.

Resting: For the first 5 days, it is recommended

to take things easy and not rush into any

major activities. There can be some pain for

these few days and it is recommended you

take paracetamol as needed.

Physiotherapy: We recommend physiotherapy

twice a week (optimal) or once a week for five

weeks. Focus on range of movement and

strengthening exercises is recommended

Dressing care: The area where the fat has been

harvested can “leak” for the first 24 hours. The

dressings will be changed prior to your

discharge and extra dressings will be given to

you. The dressings are water proof and last

3-5 days.

Bruising: Some bruising will appear from the

areas of where the fat has been harvested. It is

uncommon, however it can occur, that a bruise

may develop around the abdomen. This bruise

should not be painful but can be unsightly.

Driving and Weight bearing are both fine to do

the day after the procedure.

The effect of the lipogems takes 3-6 Weeks to

take effect, though the joint may feel quite

good for a few hours directly after treatment.

Possible side effects or complications

As with any surgical intervention, there are

some risks associated with your procedure.

Infection: An infection in the harvesting area is

extremely rare, however, If you notice

increased pain, swelling, redness, fever, or

oozing from the tissue harvest area, you should

contact your healthcare provider immediately

Signs of infection include: Abnormal heat at

the wound site. A yellow/green discharge

through the bandage. Feeling generally unwell

(flu-like symptoms) Fever or temperature

(above 38.0 degrees)

Swelling: Mild to moderate swelling and/or local

inflammation at injection site and/or site of the

tissue harvest for up to 4-5 days

post-procedure. Ice may be used to reduce

local inflammation / swelling.

Fluid build up: A “ball-like” collection of fluid

and/or blood (seroma or hematoma) are rarely

seen, and one should contact his or her

healthcare provider if this occurs.

What is Lipogems?Lipogems is a cutting-edge technology

thatharnesses the natural and powerful

reparative capability of your adipose tissue

reserves. This novel procedure may provide a

natural alternative or addition to surgical

intervention to support your body in the

reconstruction and repair of damaged or

injured tissue.

The ProcedureThe Lipogems procedure can be performed

inunder one hour and there is minimal recovery

time. Your consultant will collect a small volume

of fat from your abdomen using a minimally

invasive technique that requires only a very

small incision.

The ProcessThe Lipogems are created in a closed-system

device that uses only sterile saline solution to

wash away the impurities. The gentle process

micro-fragments the fat, preserving the

natural and beneficial properties of the tissue.

The optimal size of the Lipogems tissue allows

your consultant to accurately inject a specific

treatment site with a small gauge needle and

minimize pain at the injection site.

How do I prepare for my procedure?

Your procedure will be performed as a day

case. You will be given instructions on when to

stop eating and drinking and if you should take

medication as normal before coming into

hospital when you receive your admission

letter.

If you are having this procedure under general

anaesthesia or sedation, it is very important

that you do not have any solid food for 6 hours

prior to your appointment time.

You may continue to have sips of water until 2

hours before your procedure.

On the day of your procedure?

You will be asked to arrive at the hospital 1.5

hours before your surgery start time. You will

be greeted by our reception team and our

ward nurse will bring through to our unit where

you will be admitted.

You are welcome to bring a family

member/friend with you, however please be

advised that family/friends will not be on the

ward with you. All efforts will be made to keep

visitors informed while in the main reception

area.

You may be asked to give a urine sample for

pregnancy testing on the ward on the day of

admission; this is asked of all pre-menopausal

female patients as part of our policy.

Although every effort is made to minimise

waiting times occasionally delays do occur

and a form of entertainment (a book or a

tablet) may make the time pass more

comfortably. You will have access to free Wi-Fi

on the ward.

Diabetic patients: This change in diet may

upset your diabetes. These changes are

temporary. To assist maintenance of normal

blood sugar levels, you may sip no more than

100mls in an hour, of a sugary drink such as

Lucozade, up to 2 hours before your procedure

if your sugars dip below 4mmols/L.

Unless directed otherwise by your consultant,

continue to take your other normal

medications.
