Problems addressed by the Project

In the 1970s, the Jakarta fishing port had insufficient capacity to handle the seafood demand for the city of Jakarta, and the fish marketing system was very primitive. Lack of proper facilities was considered to be one of the main factors hindering the development of the fishing industry throughout Indonesia. To overcome this problem, the Government of Indonesia requested the Government of Japan to conduct a feasibility study for the development of the fishing port and market in Jakarta, including the provision of calm and deep port basin, quaywall, ice plant, cold storage, fish market and other related facilities. Thereafter, the Government of Indonesia implemented the construction works in 4 phases under the financial assistance of JICA through Japan’s ODA Loans.

Role of Jakarta Fishing Port

Since the commencement of its public operations in July 1984, the Jakarta Fishing Port (JFP) has served fisheries and fisheries-related industries in the following roles:

1. A fishing port to support fishing vessels and fish carriers in their fishing and related activities 2. A market center to support fishermen and fish traders in their fish distribution and marketing activities 3. A site for the establishment and development of a fish processing and fisheries-related manufacturing

industry 4. A waterfront recreation zone for the citizens of Jakarta and its surroundings

Unique Environmental Project Feature

We created a unique system to purify foul seawater in the port basin by utilizing tidal change without any energy and a mangrove belt as a revetment and a breakwater along the west coast of the port.

Publication

A Japanese book “History of Jakarta Fishing Port” was published in March 2014 to record all activities of the Project from 1973 to 2012 under the assistance of JICA.
