To identify the nature and extent of ‘problem gambling’ behaviour in licensed bingo retail operations in Great Britain.

Clubs selected on a number of characteristics (location / footfall / type / and chain –independent -sole trader).

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Separate national survey via omnibus (six waves) between November 2015 and January 2016. 11,690 interviews with the general public (515 had visited a licensed bingo club within past 12 months).

Telephone survey of 1,448 customers between 7-26 March 2016. 42% response rate.

Tried and tested questions from gambling prevalence surveys and public health surveys for England.

Data are weighted to reflect profile of those who visit licensed bingo clubs across Britain.

*Excludes duplicates and those who did not provide a valid contact telephone number

SUMMARY AND NEXT STEPS Focus of the research has been on behaviours of

frequent visitors to licensed bingo clubs in Great Britain.

Around 1 in 40 regular bingo customers are problem gamblers.

However, it is clear that a subgroup of customers are at moderate or high risk; very frequent visitors; certain activity preferences.

The key challenge is to:(a) identify these customers and (b) deal with “appropriately” to minimise harm.
