ROOT

Probable [ from Latin word probabilis that means may be proved; from probare which means to try, test, approve, make good; from probus good ]

Probability comes from the word Probable which means likely, credible, possible, apparent, feasible ect…

Page 3: Probablility(Ip)

Probability

Probability is the measure of how likely it is that some event will

happen.

Page 4: Probablility(Ip)

Example

Situation:

You are rolling a die for a game. You need to know the chances of the die

landing on 6

Page 5: Probablility(Ip)

Calculation

When calculating the probability of an occurrence you need to consider all the facts that may affect “it” occurring. Also you need to layout all the other possibilities for what might occur.

So basically probability is determined by dividing the number of selected events by the number of total events possible.

After all that when you know the probability you can express it through various ways such as:

Fractionspercentages DecimalsRatios

Page 6: Probablility(Ip)

Solving…

Information to consider:

The dice has 6 sides and the # 6 is on one side

You have one chance to roll

So you get a 1/6, .16,16%, 1 to 6 chance of rolling 6

Different types of Probability:

Experimental Probability

Theoretical Probability

Page 8: Probablility(Ip)

Theoretical Probability

Theoretical probability is when the chance of an event occurring gets determined by calculating results that would take place under a model or basic situation.

Page 9: Probablility(Ip)

For Better Understanding…

Example:

The theoretical probability of rolling a 4 on a four-sided die is 1/ 4 or 25%, because there is one chance in four to roll a 4, and in a normal situation one out of every four rolls would be a 4.

This is Theoretical Probability because you used practical theory to determine the chance of an even occurring.

Experimental Probability

Experimental Probability is results taken from experiment. To get experimental probability you will test the same experiment several times and ratio the results of how many times tested and how many times occurred. That total is your experimental probability

Page 11: Probablility(Ip)

For Better Understanding…

Example:

To find the experimental probability of winning a game, you play the game many times, then divide the number of games won by the total number of games played

This is experimental probability because you experimented to get your results and repeated the experiment to get the accurate probability of occurrence.
