Dickey Nutt has several accomplishments underhis belt since taking over as head coach in 1995,so singling out one aspect of his career to high-

light is difficult. Ask the enthusiastic coach, now in his11th season at the helm of the Indians, and he will tellyou the top honor was his team’s trip to the NCAATournament, the first in school history, during the 1998-99 season.

But the team concept that he and his staff of hard-working assistants stress also allows for some person-al achievements as well. Nutt has reached the 150career win milestone when his team defeated host North Texas in the SBCtournament last season. He has taken over sole possession of second incareer SBC victories, he’s third in school history with his 162 wins, he’s pro-duced countless all-conference performers and he’s been named District VICoach of the Year.

Under Nutt’s supervision, the Indians have rewritten several schoolrecords and a few SBC ones. Chico Fletcher, a two-time SBC Player of the

Year, set a new school and conference bench-mark when he handed out 893 assists during hisillustrious career, a total that ranks him among thetop-15 in NCAA history. Jason Jennings re-wrotethe school’s blocked shot records after FreddyHicks set the bar at a high level (also under Nutt).Jennings also became the first player in schoolhistory to record a triple-double. Hicks was a two-time SBC Defensive Player of the Year. Whileplayers that roam the paint have left their marksunder Nutt, it is the guards that have assaultedthe records.

Dewarick Spencer and J.J. Montgomerybecame the highest scoring duo that playedtogether in school history. Several times the 3-point benchmarks have been set only to be re-written and four of his guards have reached the1,000 career point plateau under his guidance.

Consistently producing at least 15 wins eachseason, Nutt has built a legacy at ASU that hasearned him national respect among his peers, and made the Convocation Center a place fewcare to play.

The Sun Belt Conference turns 30 in the 2005-06 competitionyear. While the SBC has reflected back on the past to honorseveral individuals with a 30-year all-time team, the futurecouldn’t be brighter for the conference.

Due to stringent scheduling and better teams the SBCjumped up to 12th in the conference rankings by the Sagarinrating and the final RPI Report. This season that trend shouldcontinue with several teams increasing the talent on thesquads while challenging some of the nation’s top basketballplaying schools.

Also, several changes have or will be occurring with theSBC, including the addition of Troy to all sports this competi-tion season. Louisiana-Monroe and Florida Atlantic, alreadymembers in football in the conference will be joining in allsports for the 2006-07 competition year. While losing memberNew Mexico State to the Western Athletic Conference was sadfor the institutions that enjoyed playing against the Aggies, thenew-look conference now and next season will have a bettergeographic feel.

The SBC, to com-memorate the 30th anniver-sary, commissioned a logoto be designed to help pro-mote the conference andthe history that goes with it.At the left is the new-looklogo.

A Milestone Within ReachWith two more victories the Indians will reach the 1,000 victory mark in

the program’s history, one of the biggest milestones for a basketball pro-gram.

It IS The Nutt-HouseDickey Nutt reached 100 victories in the Convocation Center in ASU’s

win over Middle Tennessee on Feb. 16. Nutt, who is already second all-time in conference victories in the Sun Belt, is also third in school history intotal victories and could direct ASU to the 1,000th win in the program’s his-tory. That’s a lot of history.

Ballard 3-Point BalletFreshman Brandon Ballard has had some difficulty at times this sea-

son behind the arc, but is quietly amassing some stout numbers. ASU’s 3-point record for a season by a freshman is held by Odie Williams at 43.Ballard’s 25 through 16 games still leaves him within striking distance ofmoving past Antonio Harvey for fourth. At right is a chart of prolific fresh-man 3-point shooters at ASU.

You Can Banks On HimYual Banks has blossomed this season after searching for playing time

his first two years at ASU. Banks scored just 20 points combined in his firsttwo seasons for the Indians. But this season, with so many injuries, Banksnot only increased his playing time, but has drawn a starting assignment in16 games and has made the most of his chances. During that 16-gamestretch, Banks has averaged 9.8 points per game and has connected on43.2 percent from behind the arc. In SBC play, Banks has been even hot-ter from the arc, shooting a robust 47.5 percent from deep.

State’s Top Talent Comes To ASUThe Indians boast two players on the roster that were the players of

the year in the state of Arkansas. Freshman Brandon Ballard is the reign-ing high school “Mr. Basketball” in the state while Lorenzo Hampton wonthe same award his senior season at Jonesboro High.

Surrounded By OpponentsThe 2005-06 schedule features several geographically local teams.

The Indians will face at least one team from every state that bordersArkansas (Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee). Of the29 games on ASU’s regular season schedule, 19 are against teams fromborder states.

Chaotic Starting LineupHistorically the Indians do a good job of settling in on a starting line-

up and keeping it intact, but injuries have forced Coach Dickey Nutt andhis staff to juggle starters. So far in 27 games this season ASU has start-ed eight different lineups and 11 different players have started overall.Only Jim Jones and Isaac Wells have started every game this season. The longest of any starting lineup this season is the one that started ninestraight games and includes Jones, Wells, Ardison, Hampton and Banks(games 15 through 23).

Giving GenerouslyDereke Tipler was very generous last season, handing out 155

assists on the year to rank as the most by an Indian since Chico Fletcher’sfinal season tally of 232 in 1999-2000. Tipler’s propensity to give has himwithin ASU’s top-10 list for career assists. His current total of 286 ties himfor eighth, but needs 37 more to tie J.H. Williams for seventh.

Tipler produced one of the program’s shining individual momentswhen he posted ASU’s second-ever triple-double against Troy. Tipler had14 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds and became the first ASU playersince Jason Jennings (31 points, 10 rebounds, 11 blocks) vs. MorrisBrown to record the rare statistical record. Tipler’s rebounds and assiststhat night were both career highs for the senior. For his efforts in thatgame and against South Alabama, Tipler was named the SBC Player ofthe Week.

Noting the IndiansASU’s overtime win over Florida International on Feb. 11 was the first

time in eight tries this season that the Indians have won a game after yield-ing at least 80 points.

Eight times in the last 11 years a guard has led the team in scoringaverage, including four straight entering this season.

After starting the season 3-4 at home, ASU ended 5-1 in the last sixhome games. The last two home losses have been by a total of five points.

As a team the Indians have reached at least 100 points in a game ineach of the last five seasons, but that streak could be in jeopardy. The lasttime ASU scored at least 100 points in a conference game was in 1972-73when the Indians and Ragin’ Cajuns of (then) Southwestern Louisiana bat-tled to a 119-106 USL victory. That spans 427 conference contests.

ASU’s current 3-point shooting percentage of 36.1 as a team wouldrank eighth in school history.

The Indians played the fewest home games (13) this season sinceplaying 13 in 2001-02.

ASU limited Richmond to just 37 points and 33 percent shooting in thefirst game of the Colonial Classic. The 37 points are the fewest allowed byan ASU team since winning at Wisconsin-Green Bay, 24-23, in 1981-82.That is a span of 686 games.

ASU’s 84-55 loss at Missouri State was the worst non-conference losssince opening up the preseason NIT at Utah in 1999-2000 (33 points).

Isaac Wells had several near-misses but finally posted his first careerdouble-double when he scored 16 points and hauled down 13 reboundsagainst Prairie View A&M. Overall Wells has three double-doubles thisseason.

More on Wells, he has already surpassed his season totals from ayear ago when he scored 246 points and grabbed 141 boards in 29 games. This season through 27 games, Wells has 372 points and 177 boards. His32 threes already this year put him far ahead of last year’s pace where hefinished with 13 behind the arc.

Over the last five games Wells is averaging 15.4 points, 6.4 reboundsand is shooting 50.5 percent from the floor.

ASU signee Ryan Wedel had his Sports Center moment on Feb. 15when he scored a school record 46 points in his team’s victory. The pointtotal was impressive, but what stood out was scoring 25 of those points in2:02 in the third quarter, or a point every 4.88 seconds. Congratulations toRyan.

Yual Banks surfaced at FIU with a career-high 23 points in the ASUwin, or seven more points in one game than he had scored in his 20 gamesentering this season.

As a team, the Indians have not yielded 100 points in a game sincelosing a double overtime game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 102-98, in2001-02, a span of 111 games.

ASU opponents are shooting 55 points higher on their home courtsthan they are in the Convocation Center (48.3 to 42.7 percent). In ASUwins the opposition shoots nearly 100 points lower than in ASU losses(39.4 in wins vs. 49.3 in losses).

Dereke Tipler averages 16.6 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists pergame in ASU wins. In fact the average ASU game tends, statistically, to bea blowout one way or another. When the Indians win, ASU wins by an aver-age of 12.1 ppg, but when ASU loses it is by 11.9 ppg.

Five of ASU’s 12 league games have been decided by four points orless.

Brandon Ballard has 25 3-pointers this season. If he connects on fivemore, ASU will have four players with at least 30 threes on the season.Currently Yual Banks, Jim Jones and Isaac Wells have already surpassedthe 30 barrier.
