  • Clos ing words by Professor K. Birkenmajer

Dear Or ga niz ers, Lec tur ers and Guests,First of all, I would like to ex press my warm est thanks for de cid ing to come to

this Ses sion. The or ga niz ers cer tainly made things lively. The lec tur ers did theirbest to eval u ate my sci en tific work over the years in or der to find some achieve -ments worth pre sent ing to the pub lic. Fi nally, the nu mer ous guests I see in thisroom do not seem bored and this gives me a great plea sure.

Now, I wish to add a few clos ing words an swer ing the ques tion: How did I hap -pen to be come a ge ol o gist ?!

I was still in my pre-school years, when my par ents gave me a thick and heavybook Brehms Life of An i mals. This book, richly il lus trated with black-and-white pho to graphs, be came very im por tant to me. When go ing to the War saw Zoo log i calGar dens, and this hap pened quite fre quently, I was al ways pre pared to meet andname my nu mer ous an i mal friends, and to lis ten to their life sto ries.

And this was the time when my fa ther was trans lat ing Rudyard Kiplings fa mousJun gle Book into Pol ish. So, I hap pily greeted the grey wolf pack from the Coun cilRock wanted to ca ress the pan ther Bagheera and the very fat bear Baloo though this was cer tainly not al lowed. And had harsh words for that treach er ous ti ger Shere Khan.

When I had al ready learned to read, my fa ther pre sented me with an other book How the Tatra Mts Orig i nated by Prof. Ed ward Passendorfer. This book letwas not as richly il lus trated as the Life of An i mals. Nev er the less, it helped me torec og nize and name some Ju ras sic fos sils: ammonites, brachi o pods and bel em -nites which I had col lected dur ing my fi nal hol i days be fore the war at Zoty Potok in the Pol ish Jura Chain.

Dur ing the siege of War saw (1939), my fa ther as a re serve of fi cer of the Pol isharmy fought against the in vad ing Ger mans while de fend ing the Cap i tal of Po landfrom the en emy. And it is there that he lost his life in the bat tle at the end of Sep tem ber.

Dur ing the dread ful Ger man oc cu pa tion years (1939-1945), my be loved Zoo log -i cal Gar dens were closed and I was nt able to visit my an i mal friends. For tu nately, there were still travel books writ ten by nat u ral ists and ex plor ers. They al lowed me tolearn of pris tine lands and wild an i mals, and of the peo ple who lived in prim i tive con -di tions far away. That is how I en coun tered Green land for the first time.

Ex pelled from my home by the Ger mans af ter the fall of the War saw Up ris ing(1944), I found a place to live in Cra cow. Here, af ter grad u at ing from the Ly cee,I chose ge ol ogy as the main fo cus of my higher ed u ca tion, un der taken at the De -part ment of Ge ol ogy of the Jagiellonian Uni ver sity headed by Prof. M. Ksikie-wicz. As a 2nd year stu dent, I be came an As sis tant at the Ge ol ogy De part ment. There, I be came friends with Dr Stanisaw Siedlecki, a mem ber and leader of thePol ish po lar ex pe di tions to Svalbard (1932/33, 1934, 1936) and West Green land(1937), who tu tored me in field ge ol ogy and ac com pa nied me on moun tain eer ingtrips in the Tatra Mts.

10 85th ANNIVERSARY OF PROFESSOR KRZYSZTOF BIRKENMAJER

  • De spite the dire po lit i cal sit u a tion in my coun try, my grow ing ex pe ri ence withfield work in the moun tains gave me the feel ing that the Arc tic my geo log i caldream was com ing within reach. In 1956, un der Siedleckis lead er ship, I be camea mem ber of a 5-man team sent by the Pol ish Acad emy of Sci ences to Nor way andSpitsbergen, in or der to find a site for the Pol ish Sci en tific Sta tion of the 3rd In ter na -tional Geo phys i cal Year. Sup ported by Prof. Stefan Zbigniew Rycki, an ex pe ri -enced po lar ex plorer, who worked in Torell Land in 1934 as a ge ol o gist in the firstPol ish Spitsbergen Ex pe di tion, and be came chair man of the Pol ish Com mis sionfor Ex pe di tions dur ing the 3nd In ter na tional Geo phys i cal Year, I be gan my life-long po lar ex pe ri ence. Spitsbergen was to be come my fa vour ite lo ca tion for sci en tificex pe di tions, 13 in all, up to the year 2002. Be sides these, I took part, as a mem beror leader, in sci en tific ex pe di tions to East Green land (2 ex pe di tions) and to WestAntarctica (8 ex pe di tions). The snowy po lar coun tries fas ci nated me for the wholeof my life.

The in struc tion at the uni ver sity also, of course, re quired me to study in my owncoun try. As a 2nd grade stu dent, I was al ready mak ing a start to my field work in thePieniny Moun tains (West Carpathians), help ing Pro fes sor Stanisaw Sokoowskiwith the de scrip tion of drillings and the prep a ra tion of a de tailed geo log i cal map(1:500 scale) for a planned wa ter dam. I suc cess fully co op er ated with the fa mousna ture pro tec tion ac tiv ists, Pro fes sors Wadysaw Szafer (a bot a nist) and WaleryGoetel (a ge ol o gist), and the Pieniny Na tional Park per son nel, to ex ert pres sure onthe en gi neers to mod ify the wa ter-dam pro ject in such a man ner as to make it lessharm ful to na ture.

When I be gan my po lar ex pe di tions, it ap peared that my en gage ment in the Arc -tic would leave much less time for my Carpathian stud ies. And here my old friendPro fes sor Ed ward Passendorfer came to the res cue: he pro posed that I de fend mydoc toral the sis on the stra tig ra phy of the Pieniny Klippen Belt at the War saw Uni -ver sity, where he was a Dean of the Ge ol ogy Fac ulty. This in fact hap pened dur ingthe spring of 1957, just be fore I was to be come thor oughly en gaged in the ac tiv i tiesof the 3rd In ter na tional Geo phys i cal Year.

My chil dren who once loved when I came back from Spitsbergen and Nor waywith white teddy bears or with a white puppy dog of Zakopane ped i gree born at ourSpitsbergen Sta tion, now have their own chil dren, and even grand chil dren. My sonand his daugh ter be came my as sis tants in Spitsbergen, and my son-in-law inAntarctica.

This meet ing is also a very pleas ant op por tu nity for me to ex press my grat i tudeto those who par tic i pated in my dif fi cult and of ten dan ger ous po lar field work, andto those who elab o rated on my rich col lec tions of an i mal and plant fos sils. Manysci en tific prob lems would still be wait ing to be solved had it not been for their valu -able con tri bu tions.

And once again Hur rah to the or ga niz ers of this friendly meet ing!
