Wrongly called ‘Panama hat’, the toquilla straw hat is weaved mainly in the provinces of Manabi (Montecristi, where thetechnique has its origin) and Azuay (Cuenca, where the biggest production is located).
The raw material needed to elaborate the toquilla straw hat comes from a native Ecuadorian plant, similar to palm. The fibre is cut from its stems and after a long process, it’s woven into hats. The finesse of the hat is measured in grades, the more finesse the higher grade and its commercial value.
The traditional weaving technique of the fine Ecuadoriantoquilla straw hat has been recognized by UNESCO as anIntangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
