    KARAVANA project.p. 0119

    Organizer: TROAS, s.r.o.

    KARAVANA project

The objective of the KARAVANA project was to provide the selected people with hearingdefect with special training in computer graphics with emphasis on prevalence of possibilitiesof their gaining ground on the labour market. The next objective is to verify if computergraphics specifics primarily not requiring communication in the spoken speech, can or can notsuit to this group of handicapped persons in the productive years with interest in assertingthemselves on the labour market.

The assertion partly comes out of software knowledge as a working tool (graphic designer, editor, photographer) and partly out of knowledge of special field and capability to distributesuch a knowledge (lector of computer graphics in sign language).

Four participants with hearing defect in age from 22 to 38 years attended the project in formof the retraining course. The participants without previous experience in computer graphics

passed the intensive two-year training and exams in mastering of graphic programmes (AdobePhotoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Flash) and they, as lectors, tried a long term lecturing ofcomputer graphics for deaf people. The retraining part of the project was finished in June 2007.

    Individualities of the course participants

Four participants with hearing defect passed the KARAVANA course. All of them receivedthe same technical means, programme equipment and lecturer's time. However, even in sosmall group differentiation of personal approach to the particular education and use of gainedexperience occurred.

Michael is deaf and at time of the course he was self-breadwinner. In his previousemployment, Michael worked as a tooler of metals and he was admitted in the Troas, s.r.o.

upon the competition for the KARAVANA Project mainly due to his indisputable art talentand high knowledge level of work on PC. He was not able to develop even apply theseabilities in his previous job.

The KARAVANA Project opened to Michael the door to the world of computer graphics. Inthe first phase he was trained for routine control of the most used graphic programmes andconsequently he was trained for lecturing. Together with other three participants of theKARAVANA project they verified the ability to transmit the gained knowledge to other

people with hearing defects interested in the computer graphics in the pilot Course ofComputer Graphics held from 27.11.2006 to 17.5.2007 under supervision of the project

partner - Federation of Parents and Friends of People with Hearing Defect (FRPSP).

During this course Michael as a graphic editor showed abilities to use the programme forcreation of catching lessons and as a lector a sense for communication needs of the students.

In the Autumn 2007 Michael was asked to participate as a tutorial lector in training ofcomputer graphics of deaf people in Ostrava within the project of Ostrava University.Considering the acceptance and positive classification from the participants Michael wasinvited to participate in the second course, that has been running in Prague from the beginning

of 2008, also under patronage of the OSU. In the time of beginning of this report (January2007) Michael was invited by the SHS VE staff (Centre of handicapped students of VE inPrague) to negotiations about possible training of VSE students with hearing defect.

Petr and Ondej are young men from Brno. Both suffer from the hearing defect and passedthe retraining and drill of lecture preparation and tutorials. Unlike Michael they focussed onuse of gained knowledge mostly in visual communication. Above all it was interest of Petrand Ondej that the organisers added to planned training excursions into creation andmodification of digital video and web presentation. With oncoming termination of theretraining part of the project, both of them were more and more active in web pages creation

for the association of which they are members and in creation of presentation materialsprimarily designed for internet.

At the end of the course (May 2007) Ondej with Petr surprised us by extraordinary quality ofout-of-grant initiative. A public presentation of 15 minute author film in which creationmostly partook Petr and Ondej. In addition to their performance in the film, both men thefilm edited, added affect, prepared a poster and organised the presentation without any help. They formed an official productive group and presented their work on their own web pages. At present both of them fully go in for the activities of this group and plan other projects.
