MISSION STATEMENT The Davies Project mission is to provide community-based, non-medical support for local families facing serious, long-term health challenges with a child.

Seventy percent of the children who use the Lansing area subspecialty clinics are on Medicaid and are missing up to 60% of their doctor appointments, often because they do not have a reasonable way of getting there. Since each appointment is essential for monitoring a child’s condition and keeping him or her as healthy as possible (and out of the hospital), TDP’s first goal is to help families by giving them volunteer-provided rides to Lansing area medical appointments.

The Davies Project provides rides to all kinds of medical care for families with ill children. We also provide rides to prenatal visits for expectant moms, and to the NICU for parents of hospitalized infants.

Everything we do at The Davies Project is about supporting the health outcomes of our community’s children.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,As The Davies Project begins its fifth year, this annual report is full of good news. From 2017 to 2018, TDP doubled the number of rides it provided to medical care for local children in need. This included rides to specialty care, physical and occupational therapy, primary care, dental and eye care, and mental health appointments. Thanks to a remarkable team of dedicated volunteer drivers, hundreds of children in our community with serious medical conditions are healthier than they would have been, and their futures are brighter as a result.The Davies Project also provided rides to prenatal care for dozens of expectant moms and to NICU parents so that they could visit and bond with their hospitalized infants. Our families are grateful for the community’s support in making our agency a success, and so are we. We could not do it without you.While 2018 was a wonderful year for doing what we love, it was also a year of high demand that stretched our resources thin. In reality, we could only find rides for nine out of every ten families that reached out to us for help. Without additional support, this gap has the potential to grow wider.In 2019, we have three main goals. First, we are working with 7C Lingo to add translated materials to our website and to provide access to a 24/7 translation phone line to meet the needs of refugee and immigrant families. As newcomers to our country, many have not yet learned sufficient English to meet the communication challenges involved in addressing the pressing medical needs of their children. Second, we will actively campaign for more volunteer drivers to join our cause. Third, we will pursue support from our community’s big health players, whose industries benefit from children who show up at all of their medical appointments. As always, our team is ready and available to deliver presentations throughout the community—any time, anywhere. Please consider hosting a More Than Just A Ride tour for 10-12 of your friends or invite us to give a fun presentation at your place of worship or club.Our team is always open to ideas and suggestions. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Friends of The Davies Project, When I first met Pam Miklavčič in early 2016, I was taken by the story of how her family coped with the illness of her young son years earlier. As the fortunate dad of two healthy young children, I couldn’t fathom the challenges families face when caring for a sick child. Sometimes, even as a two-car family, my wife and I can find the logistics of taking our kids to well child visits complicated. Pam’s ability to turn her experience into a way to help other families was truly inspiring. When I got home, all I could do was hug my kids and be grateful. Originally from Spring Lake, I’d settled in the Lansing area upon graduation from Northern Michigan University in 2006 and eventually started my own firm. The Davies Project and I crossed paths just as my desire to become involved in the community intensified. When I learned that Pam was looking for new board members, I answered the call. As a financial planner, I felt I could help The Davies Project develop solid fiscal planning strategies for both short-term success and long-term security. I truly appreciate the opportunity to help create steps to attract solid financial support, a critical aspect of our sustainability, and I feel privileged to serve as current president.Working with this group of compassionate, committed individuals is a uniquely gratifying life experience. I’m constantly fascinated by the way our drivers provide “more than just a ride” by offering friendship and emotional support to the families they drive. These relationships offer stability when families are uncertain, resources when needs are identified, and the greatest gift of all—knowing that someone cares. Our drivers are more than people movers. As facilitators, they embody the key to our success—building trust. We’ve learned that every ride matters. Every chance we get to connect with a family in need is the chance to change the trajectory of their lives.We still need more people like you to help give rides. For 2019, we look forward to recruiting more drivers to meet growing transportation needs, and to expanding both the scope and range of our services. Our goal is to continue to build a sustainable organization that can withstand the changes that take place outside the organization as well as within. Our aim is to be agile in the fast paced world of today. Moving forward, we can build upon the strength of our relationships to help identify and expand our services and resources. The more we can do to help our community, the better!
