PROFILE
BRICK MASON (841 – 107 – 4)
Job – Description Bricklayers lay bricks, concrete blocks, stone and other similar materials to construct or repair walls,
arches, garden walls and other structures in accordance with blueprints and specifications. May
restore existing masonry work; apply plaster to walls and ceilings
Task Analysis
o Checks drawings and other specifications for buildings under Applies basic safety rules and
instructions of occupational health rules for himself and others
o Erects and dismantles access platforms (scaffolding)
o Read sketches and blueprints and specifications
o Execute basic materials calculate
o identifies ingredients and materials for mortar and brickwork
o prepares mortar/concrete/plaster and consults the supervisor for adjustment of the
consistency if necessary
o Spreads brickwork mortar by trowel for the bed joints
o Cut and trim bricks and concrete blocks to specification using hand and power tools
o Prepare and lay bricks, concrete blocks, stone, structural tiles and similar materials to
construct or repair walls, foundations and other structures in residential, industrial and
commercial construction
o Checks the measurements of the walls in accordance with the construction drawings, the
vertical and horizontal alignment of the brickwork and the alignment of the joints
o Lay bricks or other masonry units to build patios, garden walls and other decorative
installations
o May restore, clean, plaster existing masonry structures.

The trainee is able to manufacture straight walls with
openings for windows and doors with concrete blocks under
supervision. (project work)

Plastering and Rendering of Block
Walls
The trainee is able to provide basic external and internal
plaster including all preparation work for concrete block
walls. He can relate different plaster mortars to there task
and knows the basic requirements of plaster.
The trainee is able to identify existing plaster and maintain a
plaster executing all necessary steps for repairing the
surface.

Filling-in of Concrete Skeleton
The trainee is able to execute filling-in of wall panels
between columns with concrete blocks independently.

Quantity Surveying
The trainee is able to calculate the needed amount of
materials for bricklaying and plastering work.

After the completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. Manufacture solid walls with openings for doors, windows junctions, intersections,
acute squint and oblique squint using concrete bricks and calcium silicate bricks
2. manufacture simple cavity according to drawings
3. produce internal and external plaster surfaces with different coats and materials
4. identify, maintain and repair external and internal plaster
5. build panels between two columns etc. using concrete blocks and calcium silicate
bricks
6. execute basic trade related calculations
7. build different kind of arches and curved walls
