Slivon was drafted into the United States Army in April of 1941 and attended infantry training at Camp Croft, South Carolina. In February of 1942, Slivon was transferred to the Veterinary Corps and sent to the Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Following his Veterinary Technical course, Slivon was placed in Officer Candidate School at Camp Lee, Virginia. Slivon graduated in October of 1942 with a commission as a 2 nd Lieutenant in the Quartermaster Corps. In the fall, Slivon attended Cooks and Bakers’ school in Presidio, San Francisco. Slivon was deployed on April 30 th , 1943 for Efate, New Hebrides (currently Vanuatu) and arrived on May 24 th , 1943. Biographical Note Frank R. Slivon was born July 1st, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois to Stefan Slivon and Maria (Tomasovich) Slivon and was the youngest of 7 children. Slivon attended high school at Fenger High School on Chicago's South Side and participated in ROTC, attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Upon graduating from Fenger in February of 1934, Slivon went to work for Swift & Company in the Chicago stockyards. Slivon was drafted into the United States Army in April of 1941 and attended infantry training at Camp Croft, South Carolina. In February of 1942, Slivon was transferred to the Veterinary Corps and sent to the Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. February to August of 1945, Slivon served on Luzon Island in Manila, Philippines. Here, Slivon oversaw the food supply for internees of the Japanese internment camp Santo Tomas. Slivon returned to the United States and received his separation papers in the fall of 1945. In January 1946, Slivon was promoted to Captain and discharged from the Army in March 1946. Slivon met Alice Lorraine Kuhl on December 31st, 1947 and the two married on October 15th, 1948. Frank and Alice Slivon had two children, Christine Alice Slivon on September 5th, 1949 and Robert Frank Slivon on March 26th, 1952. In 1953, Slivon took a position with the Swift South San Francisco Branch Office. The Slivon family lived in California until 1962, when they moved back to Chicago. Slivon continued to work for Swift & Company until 1981 when he retired as a labor negotiator. Frank R. Slivon died on September 29, 2013 at the age of 97.

Scope and Content of the Collection The Collection of Frank R. Slivon WWII Memories includes types of materials related to the military service of Frank R. Slivon throughout training and serving in the Quartermaster Corps during WWII. Arrangement The collection arrived in minimal original order. Where possible, the original order has been maintained, particularly under Series Three: Photographs and Negatives. The collection consists of four series: Series One: Military Documents, 1932-1987, n.d. These records pertain to the military service of Frank R. Slivon. The series contains personnel documents, military orders and correspondence, certificates, and military publication regarding the Pacific Theater during WWII. This series also contains correspondence from the United States kitchen unit during the United States occupation of the Santo Tomas Internment Camp. Series Two: Personal Papers, 1941-2000, n.d. This series contain correspondence, the bulk of which is written by Frank R. Slivon, to and from Slivon family members and friends, collected postcards and greeting cards, and newspaper clippings. The bulk of the series was written or collected during Frank R. Slivon's service.

Series Three: Photographs and Negatives, 1941-1945, n.d. This material pertains to Frank Slivon's training and deployment to the Pacific Theater. The series contains photographs and negatives from training bases in the United States, Philippines, and Vanuata (previously New Hebrides). The series also contains several before and after photographs of Manila, Philippines following bombings and heavy artillery fighting during WWII. Series Four: Oversized Materials, 1934-2010, n.d. This series contains newspaper and magazine pages and certificates pertaining to the Pacific Theater during WWII and Frank R. Slivon's military service.
