Agri-Energy Forum ENERGY EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS FOR FARMS
PREPARED BY: Sam Thomas, Agriculture Energy Advisor
January 27th 2012
Overview
1. Background / Introduction
2. Common Energy Management Opportunities &
Incentives
3. Next steps – taking action
Energy Management Opportunities -
LIGHTING
Common opportunities for BC farms:
Energy Management Opportunity Estimated Savings Potential Incentive
BC Hydro - PIP program ($7 to $75 per
luminaire)
BMP (ARDCorp) - (30% up to $10k)
BC Hydro - PIP program ($8 to $30 per lamp
(LED only))
BMP (ARDCorp) - (30% up to $10k)
ALL: Use natural lighting where
possibleVariable -
$20 - $30 /year per 2 lamp T12
luminaire on 12hrs/day.
ALL: Replace T12 fluorescent with
T8 or T5 lamps
$10 - $20 /year per lamp on 12
hrs/day
ALL: Replace incandescent lamps
with CFL or LED
Energy Management Opportunities -
HEATING
Common opportunities for BC farms:
Energy Management Opportunity Estimated Savings Potential Incentive
GREENHOUSES / NURSERIES:
Retrofit gravity vented unit
heaters with condensing unit
heaters
Up to 25% reduction in gas
heating bill, or appx $1,700 per
acre per year gas savings.
Watch this space…
GREENHOUSES / NURSERIES:
Isolate standby boilersUp to 10% of heating bill -
ALL: Insulate bare sections of hot
water pipes or uninsulated tanksVariable BMP (ARDCorp) - (30% up to $30k)
Energy Management Opportunities -
CONTROLS
Common opportunities for BC farms:
Energy Management Opportunity Estimated Savings Potential Incentive
GRAIN: Automated dryer controls
+ variable speed feed system15% of dryer heating fuel
BMP (ARDCorp)
30% up to $10k
ALL: Variable speed drives on
irrigation pumps (if demand is
variable)
Variable BC Hydro - PIP program ($140 per hp)
GREENHOUSE: Disable zone
heating pumps when no heating
required
$70 per acre of greenhouse per
year-
Energy Management Opportunities –
MOBILE EQUIPMENT
Common opportunities for BC farms:
Energy Management Opportunity Estimated Savings Potential Incentive
GRAIN / VINEYARDS: Zero tillage /
Zero trimming
Zero tillage: $6/hectare per
tillage pass-
ALL: Do not leave machinery idling
unneccessarily
Appx $3-5 per hour tractor left
idling-
ALL: Replace tractor driven
irrigation pumps with electricVariable
BMP (ARDCorp)
30% up to $10k
Take home list…
• 10 quick wins, zero/low cost, no excuse! 1. Turn out lights when not needed (use signs/stickers to prompt);
2. Ensure hot water heating set-points are as low as possible;
3. Repair dripping hot water faucets;
4. Check for loose or worn pump/fan belts and tighten or replace;
5. Ensure fans (including refrigeration condenser fans) and air
compressor intakes are clear from obstructions;
6. Clean dirty fan blades;
7. Avoid irrigation during the hottest part of the day;
8. Repair irrigation system leaks (pumping energy);
9. Ensure vehicles and mobile equipment engines are regularly
maintained;
10. Ensure correct tractor tire pressure and ballasting.
Next steps…
To reduce energy costs at your facility: 1. Farm Energy Assessment (FEA) - (handout provided).
2. Implement zero/low-cost opportunities immediately, and prioritize
capital-intensive opportunities.
3. Access incentive funding where available (help is available).
4. Enjoy your cost savings and environmental benefits!
Contact the Agriculture Energy Advisor (myself) for a point of contact
on any issues relating to agricultural energy efficiency in BC and
technical guidance with implementation. This is a free resource
available to producers until March 2013.
