lthAbsolutely Abs: Midsection Make-OverWe all have four layers of abdominal muscles, each with fibers running in a different direction. This criss-crossing pattern shapes your mid-section and supports the lower back. There are many reasons why the abs can weaken and lose shape: past preg-nancies, abdominal surgery, sitting for hours a day at a desk, to name a few. In this workshop we will: Strengthen all 4 layers of ab muscle without getting on the floor; Re-Shape your waistline; Check for Diastasis Rectus - overstretched abdominal connec-tive tissue from pregnancies one year or decades ago. (If you have this, it will change how you need to do ab exercises because common crunches will only serve to weaken muscles further); Show you how to correct this problem; Regain control of ab muscles that have been cut from surgery; Strengthen abs from the inside out; Anywhere/Anytime ab exercises that fit into even the busiest of schedules; Get a tummy tuck without surgery; Relieve lower back discomfort. Absolutely Abs: Midsection Make-OverWe all have four layers of abdominal muscles, each with fibers running in a different direction. Come prepared to exercise and bring a mat.

The Spirited Child - Secrets to Effective DisciplineHow do you discipline a child who refuses to take “no” for an answer and seems to know the perfect trigger to “push your buttons?” What strategies work with a child who can feel the seams in socks and refuses to wear them or one who “loses it” because there is a change in plans? What do you do when he’s having difficulty listening or staying focused? Is there a way to survive and even enjoy life with a spirited child?

Join Mary Sheedy Kurcinka to discover: • What makes kids spirited; • Techniques that help you identify and focus on this child’s

strengths; • Effective discipline strategies for stopping challenging

behaviors; • Tools for teaching this child essential life skills, such as

managing intensity, coping with change, and working with others;

• How to plan for success and create an environment where the spirited child thrives;

• An appreciation for the joy and excitement of life with the spirited child.

Mary Sheedy Kurcinka is an internationally recognized lecturer and parent educator and best-selling author of Raising Your Spirited Child, Raising Your Spirited Child Workbook; Kids, Parents, and Power Struggles; and Sleepless in America: Is Your Child Misbehaving or Missing Sleep. As director of parentchildhelp.com, Mary provides training nationally and internationally for families

and professionals. Licensed as a parent educator and early childhood teacher, she has pioneered efforts to bring topics such as temperament, neurobiology, the importance of sleep, and emotion coaching into homes, schools, medical practices, and businesses. Known for her real-life examples, Mary links research-based information with typical challenging behaviors and provides practical solutions that really work. Her presentations have helped hundreds of thousands of parents and professionals to understand children better, and themselves as well. A former director of one of Minnesota's largest Early Childhood Family Education programs, Mary is the founder of the Spirited Child and Kids, Parents, and Power Struggles workshops. She also provides individual parent consultations for families and professionals.

Early Childhood Screening 952-226-0975

The early childhood years, from birth to the start of kindergarten, are an important time of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how your child is doing at age three to four.The screening process identifies, at an early age, possible health or learning concerns so children can get help before starting school. All children need to be screened before enrolling in kindergarten. If your child is of screening age and you’d like to schedule an appointment, or if you are conscientiously opposed to screening, please contact our office.

In this age of Tweets, blogs and mass emails, the face of communications has changed dramatically in a relatively short amount of time. We live in a digital age where electronic forms of communica-tions are common marketing tools and social media is now a mainstream phenomenon.

You may think of electronic communications as effective mediums in your personal life or in business but they are just as relevant in school communications.

Electronic communications enables the district to reach more people quickly, easily and affordably. It also presents an opportunity for better two-way com-munications.

A recent district-wide survey indicated the use of email and website as sources for district information has soared since 2006. We have also learned that resi-dents in the Prior Lake-Savage area are tech savvy and favor social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

As a result, district communications is following suit to reach stakeholders in ways that are meaningful to them. Here are just a few examples:

• You can now follow Community Education Services on Twitter: Twitter.com/isd719commed and Facebook: ISD719CommEd.• You can register for Community Education Services classes online.• District-wide news updates can be found on Twitter: Twitter.com/isd719.• We have implemented a new email system called Constant Contact where

anyone in the community can sign up to receive important news, events and program information.

• A dedicated email address has been established for those who want to pro-vide feedback on a topic or issue: [email protected].

• School Board meetings will soon be available on the district’s website.

Of course traditional mediums such as catalogs, other mailings and face-to-face interactions will always remain an important part of the communications mix. Electronic communications simply offer new ways to reach more people with greater efficiency.

I hope you will try out some of these new communications tools to stay in touch with your community schools. You may even want to check out my new blog: http://intouchwithdrgruver.blogspot.com. If you would like to receive district news via email, please contact [email protected]

I look forward to sharing our district’s success stories with you throughout the school year and want to hear your stories too. I hope you will stay in touch. There is a lot to celebrate in Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools!

Advisory Councils are active task-oriented groups who make recommendations about policies, procedures, program offerings, budgets, and more for ISD 719 Community Education Services programs. Together these groups determine what resources could be utilized to meet the needs and interests of community members without duplicating the efforts provided by others.

If you would be interested in working with a council to address the lifelong learning needs of our district, please call Leanne J. Weyrauch, Director

at 952-226-0082, to request an application for membership.
