Rabbi Joachim Prinz’ unflinching leadership in the face of evil made him one of the great pro‐phe c voices of the 20th Century.  He challenged the Nazis from his Berlin pulpit and de‐

nounced the racial injus ce he countered on American soil.  The film highlights his speech at the March on Washington and friendship with Dr. Mar n Luther King, Jr.

TBA Book Group with Rabbi Kulwin Thursday, October 1, 7:30 PM All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr Two stories converge. The first, of Marie‐Laure, blind from age six, who flees with her father from Nazi‐occupied Par‐is.  The second, of Werner, a German orphan who becomes a hero in the Hitler Youth.   Doerr  uncovers good and kindness in most unexpected ways. A Na onal Book Award finalist.

Israel Through Film

Cinema is big in Israel. Israelis love the movies and, for its size, Israel produces a lot of them.  Art, by its very nature, is a way of looking at something, and in these sessions we will see what we can learn about Israel through its films:  how do Israelis see themselves, how do Israelis see the world, and on why do Israeli filmmakers make the films they do?  Some mes, films reinforce the historical narra ve with which we are familiar; other  mes, films stand that narra‐ve on its head.  We will watch and discuss examples of both. Current Israeli cinema frequently makes it to America – 

films like Beaufort, Ushpizin and Waltz with Bashir were shown widely.  But these five selec ons, all about  90 minutes long, in Hebrew with English sub tles, are li le seen today.  As part of the Israeli canon, however, they were popular, influen al and significant in their day.  Rabbi Kulwin will introduce each screening and lead a  discussion a erward. Dates are Wednesdays, October 7, November 18, January 13, February 10 and March 2.  

Wednesday, October 7, 7:00 PM Sallah Shaba   (1964)  The immense post‐independence immigra on to Israel of North African Jews is underway.  His enormous family in tow, Sallah arrives in Israel and encounters the mother of all bureaucracies, Ashkenazi kibbutzniks who actually expect him to work, and a country that basically considers him a second class Jew.  Writer/Director Kishon was one of Israeli’s greatest sa rists.  

Wednesday, November 18, 7:00 PM   Hill 24 Doesn’t Answer  (1955)   O en called Israel’s first feature film, and set during the War of Independence, the drama Hill 24 tells the tale of four young Israeli soldiers on the way to defend a strategic hill overlooking Jerusalem.  It is a film based on a bold, patrio c theme 

Wednesday, January 13, 7:00 PM Hill Halfon Doesn’t Answer (1976)    A li le John Wayne, li le MASH, and a lot of Marx Brothers, Hill Halfon pokes fun at army life though it’s more in‐terested in the army as a backdrop for slaps ck.  The actors include Hagashach Hashiver, an Israeli comedy trio akin, in their day, to Mar n and Lewis. 

History Through Text with Rabbi Kulwin First Series for 2015‐2016: Varie es of An ‐Semi sm.  Historians teach us that an ‐Semi sm takes different forms:  Hitler prac ced racial an ‐Semi sm, Shakespeare wrote literary an ‐Semi sm, and Spanish Jews suffered from the religious an ‐Semi sm of the Inquisi on.  In these sessions we will read first hand documents including The Mer‐chant of Venice, Mein Kampf and various Chris an texts.  As we explore the different of an ‐Semi sms we will discuss their similari es and differences, as well as reach an understanding of how best to define the phenomenon.

The Jewish Legacy of the Piano...A Year of Celebra on A Series of Solo Piano Recitals featuring Three of the World's Foremost Ar sts A list of world‐renowned Jewish pianists might begin with just Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubinstein but would quickly reach into the hundreds.  As an examina on of concert programs from the world’s great concert halls would show, the history of piano virtuosity cannot be separated from Jewish history, so significant and influen al have Jew‐ish pianists been. This year we celebrate this rela onship with solo piano recitals by three great Jewish pianists, each from a different country:  Arnaldo Cohen from Brazil, Joseph Kalichstein from Israel and Vladimir Feltsman from Russia.  They will play major works from throughout the classical piano repertoire, represen ng the breadth of Jewish pianis c accomplishment.  Open to the community! Bring your friends!    Admission fees per recital: Members and students $18 General admission: $25 Order  ckets online or use the  enclosed  cket order form.   This series is underwri en by the Ann & Milton Colman/Samuel A. Cohen Fund.

Sunday, October 4, 2015 This blockbuster exhibit examines Kahlo's keen apprecia on of the natural world, as seen in her home, garden and use of plant imagery in her artwork. The one hour guided tour features her studio and  garden at Casa Azul reimagined in the Conservatory. A er lunch on our own in the café, we will view her original pain ngs, drawings and photographs in the Library galleries. We conclude with a private tram ride around the gardens.
