HELIOS PrintPreview offers convenientand reliable last minute productionchecks of print jobs prior to final output.Any PostScript job sent to a HELIOSEtherShare spool queue, be it separationor composite, can easily be previewedas a PDF file. It does not matter whichapplication on what platform generatedthe print job. The previews are based onthe final output devices’ PPDs and aretrue representations of the final output inall aspects regarding completeness andaccuracy of page elements, correct col-ors, typography, and font usage.The previews are stored on the HELIOSserver. They contain job ticket informa-tion and the final pages in compositeand/or separation mode. They can beaccessed and printed from any clientwith a PDF browser e.g. Adobe AcrobatReader on PC, Macintosh, or UNIX.

On Apple Macintosh, the previews caneasily be opened by double clicking theirpreview icon in EtherShare Admin’sspool queue window. The operator cancheck the jobs on screen or proof printerand release them for production, e.g.with a simple "drag and drop".

The previews are color-matched accord-ing to ColorSync/ICC in order to simu-late the final colors on a monitor for asoft-proof or on a color printer for ahard-copy proof. Even locally attachedPC ink-jet printers can be used for thatpurpose and will show exactly the colorswhich will be printed – be it on a news-paper press, a high-quality magazinepress, or a short-run CTP-system.

PrintPreview is based on HELIOS Base and EtherShare. It uses the fontserver and the included PostScript 3fonts and all the fonts embedded in thejob to create a typographically correctpreview.

The size of the previews depends uponpage format and chosen resolution. It istypically just a few hundred kilobytes perpage. This allows not only fast job proof-ing on any Macintosh or PC in the localnetwork, but also convenient remoteproofing over modem, ISDN, or theInternet.

Standard separated jobs,separated jobs with any number of spotcolor plates, and composite jobs aresupported.Structure of Preview FilesPrintPreview creates PDF preview filesfor any PostScript job sent to an EtherShare spool queue with previewingenabled. The preview contains the sepa-rations and optionally also a combinedcolor view of the whole job. Usually,each page in the document printed endsup as a chapter in the PDF preview withthe four CMYK separation plates, anyadditional spot color plates, and a com-posite color view as pages in that chap-ter; these pages are bitmaps. The pre-view always starts with a job ticket page.Preview’s Job Ticket InformationPrintPreview includes text-based jobticket information at the beginning ofeach preview document. It tells the ne-cessary details about the job, including:� EtherShare spool queue used � Print client’s name� Date, time, and name of print job� Number of pages in the PostScript job

(which for separation print jobs is usu-ally not the same as the number ofpages of the original document)

� Preview resolution and color space� ICC profile settings as specified for

the final printout and for the previewproof simulation

Parameters for Preview FilesTechnically speaking, PrintPreviewimplements a new kind of printer con-nection for the EtherShare spooler. WithPrintPreview installed, the EtherShareadministrator can set up spool queueswhich do not print to the usual outputdevices, but into a PDF preview fileinstead. The following options are avail-able:� Inclusion of separation plates� Inclusion of composite color pages� Resolution of PDF preview bitmap &

anti-aliasing� On-the-fly ZIP or JPEG compressionIf a postprocessing “hold” queue wasassigned to a PrintPreview spool queue,the hold queue’s PPD setting will beapplied. The administrator can also setcolor management parameters and, ifImageServer is installed and the spoolqueue is OPI enabled, all the usual OPIparameters.

Accuracy of Preview FilesThe preview file provides an accuraterepresentation of the final output in allrelevant aspects: completeness of page,correctness of page elements incl. OPIresolving, proper typography and fonts,color fidelity, and page geometryaccording to the final RIP’s PPD. Thepreviews allow reliable productionchecks just before the jobs are issued tothe final RIP or press – a must for direct-to-plate/press/paper workflows or short-run digital color printing.

Access to PrintPreviewsPreview files are stored in the queue’sspool directory or in a shared volume.They can be viewed and handled by anyclient with a PDF browser and withproper access to these directories, be itaccess over the local area network oreven over optionally installed FTP orWeb servers. Because the PDF previewsare usually very compact in size remoteproduction checks via modem, ISDN, orInternet are feasible.

Preview Handling with EtherShareAdminFor viewing in Acrobat Reader, previewscan be opened within EtherShare Adminby a double click in the spool job listing.Jobs are then easily checked on-screenand released for final production or for-warded to further processing, e.g. toprint hard-copy proofs.

Color Proofing with PrintPreviewPrintPreview queues can be set up tosimulate the color capabilities of the finaldevice on a monitor or printer. Thisoffers convenient soft-proofing of thewhole document with all its colors – be itraster images, vector graphics, text,graphical elements, etc. – on screen aswell as easy hard-copy color proofs.Even color proofing on suitable, non-PostScript PC ink-jet printers is anoption – achieved by printing the pre-view’s proper RGB or CMYK bitmapwith Acrobat Reader.
