Quick Guide to Printing a Turnitin Originality Report onBlackboard

OverviewThe Turnitin Blackboard building block allows students to submit anassignment from within their Blackboard course directly to theTurnitinplagiarism prevention software. Turnitin then generates an 'OriginalityReport' which identifies unoriginal submitted material.

Originality Reports can be downloaded and/or printed, for the benefit ofthe instructor, student, examiner or extern.

This document assumes that the Instructor has already created a Turnitinassignment on Blackboard and that a student has already submitted apaper.

1 The Instructor Accesses the Turnitin Originality

    Report

    1. Instructors access the Control Panel Course Tools and thenclick on the Turnitin Assignments link.

    2. Click View under the name of the assignment. You will seea list of all student submissions, ordered by the percentage textmatching in the originality reports (highest percentage at the top).

Completed originality reports are colour coded with a percentagevalue. Note that a ghosted out report box indicates that theoriginality report is being generated. Click on the colour coded iconto view the originality report.3. This will open up the Turnitin document viewer.

Instructor notes for viewing Originality Reports

Turnitin is not a plagiarism detection tool it is simply a text matchingtool. The percentage matching is not a reliable indicator of the level ofplagiarism within student work. You must carefully interpret the originalityreports before making a judgement about plagiarism.

For further information and help with interpreting originality reports, please contact [email protected].

Please keep in mind that you may be presented with a large number oforiginality reports and it may not be possible to view each one. Thereforeyou need to have considered a strategy for dealing with these. Possiblestrategies are:

Only examine originality reports with a similarity index above acertain limit (e.g. 25%)

Only examine the N originality reports with the highest similarityindices, where N is a number pre-determined by you (e.g. 15 out of100 assignments).

Select N assignments at random from those submitted and only

    submit these to Turnitin.
