CLAIR WALLEYE ASSOCIATION WALLEYE WORLD FIELD & STREAM “SPRING FISHING KICKOFF” by Jim Lease LSCWA was invited out to the new Field & Stream store in Troy, Michigan on March 20th to participate in their Spring Fishing Kickoff. The kickoff was open to the public and included fishing seminars, product demos and free hourly drawings where some very nice prizes were given away. In return for our participation, we had the opportunity to describe our club and its functions with those attending, talk about some of our walleye techniques, and sell tickets for our trolling motor drawing. In return, we were given $100 by Field & Stream. In addition, they had an in-house contest between us and the other clubs that were present with the winner receiving an additional $150. The way it was set up, every person who came to our table was given a wooden nickel which they could use to vote for their favorite table. Fortunately for us, Jerry Comfort had his secret tackle box with him and that won us quite a few votes. At the end of the day, we won the contest by 60 votes and won the $150. All total we gained $250 for the club. We also got to do some well-deserved shopping while we were there and Field & Stream agreed to become an advertiser in our Walleye World paper. Pictured below are some of the club members who helped out that day. Left to right are Jim Lease, Yohance Wilson, Jerry Comfort, Richard and Joann Koch and presenting the check are Phil Ozbun and far right Duayne Cupp of Field & Stream. Swap Shop meetingby Jim Lease

For some of the new members I would like to explain a little bit about the swap meeting coming up this month. It is our general membership meeting only this one you can bring any fishing equipment you might have at home to sell or trade with fellow members. Used, new or in- between bring it down to the April meeting and see if you can go home with some cash or maybe some fishing lure you have been looking for. For non members there will be a charge for selling but members are welcome to sell or trade for free or a donation if you do sell some products. One of the products I will be looking for are Rich and Keith’s new jigs. They have been selling quite well this year and some of the new colors are great. Come on down on the 20th and tell your buddies.

president’s cornerby Richard BensonSpring is here, along with the walleye! Get those boats, rods and reels out because it looks like it is going to be a fabulous year for fishing. If you haven’t seen pics or read reports, early season fishing on Lake Erie has been producing trophy fish daily. As of this writing, the Detroit River is just starting to heat up with great fishing just ahead, get out there and fish! Now, for some club news, Don Murray reports membership is on the rise, be sure to have your dues up to date this coming meeting, April 20th, if you plan on fishing the derby. Also, at the April meeting we will be having our annual swap shop. Members are allowed to bring items to sell, trade or barter to other members and guests. You MUST be a member to sell items at the April meeting, card check at door. April’s derby always holds the potential for a record breaking fish to come in...remember this years largest fish weighed in at a derby is going to be mounted by St. Clair Flats Taxidermy, just another benefit of membership in the best walleye club out there.Bingo has been going strong, yet I still need a few more volunteers. If you haven’t come out to see you should, great things have come about from this fundraiser. Jerry Comfort also needs more participation in the motor raffle, sales have been a bit off but still good. Finally, Mike Smith has done one heck of a job with the club merchandise, that new hoodie is not only great looking but very comfortable to wear. We originally said limited time only, but as long as we keep getting enough orders to fill the minimum required by our clothing shop we will sell them until July, which is our 40th anniversary. Hats off to a great job by Mike.Good fishing, RichThis is YOUR club, get out there and be a part of it!

cost of doing Businessby Don MurrayAt the February board meeting the subject of non-members wanting to set up a table for the April swap meeting was discussed. After various board member discussions, the board set up a fee structure for non-members. The decision was any non-member would be charged with a membership fee, the membership would be their choosing and be applied to a membership into the club. The fee charge is not new for the club it has been applied in the past. The fee is just a new standard for the club, hopefully the club will gain new members with new ideas to help the club as we go forward.

lScWa membersJust a reminder to mark your calendar and volunteer to help.

At our board meeting last month we talked about our upcoming schedule. We need you to mark your calendars and make plans to help out at various events.

The pro event that we did last year in St. Clair Shores is happening again but this time it is at Elizabeth Park in Trenton. We need at least 6 people for Friday and Saturday. April 15 and 16. You don’t have to be there both days. We will be assisting them in running their tournament from 2 pm to 6 pm. Jerry Comfort will be the contact person. If you can help with the pro event call or email him - 586-482-0026, [email protected].

Also the same weekend we are having Trade a Trip. We need more boats to take out the Steelheaders.

April 15th and 16th. You do not have to do both days. Fish dinner will be at Gilbert’s. Contact person for the trade a trip is Rich Benson, 586-663-6020. If we are to continue this yearly event, we need boats. Remember we get to go there in May.

Our first Derby is being held April 23 and help is needed weighing in fish. If you don’t have a boat and or not participating in the derby, this is a way you can support your club by helping out. Don’t worry about not having experience. You will be taught by someone who has done it before. Help at future derbies is also needed. Contact person is Tim Muir, 586-354-0145.

Another event that is in the planning stage is Blessing of the Boats. This event will be Saturday, May 28. If you have ever heard of the Blessing of the Bikes, this is where the idea came from. This event is to help promote safe boating with the blessing from God. This will probably be held on Belle Isle. Help is needed and Bob Barnes is the contact person. 586-513-7754.

Another event June 11 is free fishing day. We have been approached by the DNR at Belle Isle to help them on that day. They will be having kids show up to fish off the pier and will need someone to help them. This will be GREAT for LSCWA to show support to the DNR. Don’t forget we have been asking them for a ramp on the island. If our club continues to show them we are an active club, it can only help in getting a nice boat ramp and better access to the Detroit River and south end of Lake St. Clair. Jerry Comfort is the contact person for this event. I need someone to be chairman of this event.

If you are a new member helping out at these events, this is a great way to get involved with the club and meet new people that share your same interest. If you have been an existing member, this is crunch time. You can see by the schedule the board members are overworked and need your support.

Every Sunday evening is Bingo night. This is our club’s biggest fund raiser. Rich Benson does it EVERY Sunday. Help him out. Call him, you are needed.

We would like you to pick at least one event. We have enough members; we should have the manpower to cover these events. PLEASE keep these dates on your calendar.

Active participation is needed. This is your club, please help.

Fish on,

Jerry Comfort LSCWA Vice President 586-482-0026

Field and Stream Visitby Shawn Elliott

On Wednesday, July 15, 2015, LSCWA members Shawn and Joey Elliott met with Field & Stream’s Community Marketing Coordinator to tour the new store located behind the Oakland Mall, 705 W. 14 Mile Road, Troy, MI, easily seen off I-75, on exit 65A. The 50,000 plus square-foot store opened for business this year in March and is one of twelve Field & Stream stores. A huge fireplace greets you as you enter the spacious store. Once inside your eyes are drawn to the various mounts that encompass the interior of the store. This impressive store has packed shelves with fishing, camping, hunting, archery, gun shop, home decor, paddling, and clothing gear and more. Joey was immediately drawn to the fishing department. If you go visit you will see why. It is extraordinary! The store is equipped with an indoor archery range for testing the products. Check out all the store events at www.fieldandstreamshop.com.

Raffle WinnerThe winner of the raffle for the Belanger Park boat launch was Henry Latosz.

A big thank you goes out to the city of River Rouge for donating a boat launch pass to Belanger Park for the 2016 season. This is the second year River Rouge has donated the pass. Visit the launch and support the city of River Rouge.

I have personally used this launch for the past 4 years. It is clean, excellent security, fast access to the middle river area, well maintained and lots of parking. The address is 1 Belanger Park, River Rouge, Mich.

Thanks again City of River Rouge, Jerry Comfort LSCWA Vice President

gary the garpike Finds a home!by Shawn Elliott, 3-20-16

A sunny day in July 2015, we went trolling Lake St Clair looking for walleye. The day was hot and the bugs thick, so we ran around the lake checking some of our spots. With little action to speak of, Joey, age 9, indicated that he saw some fish popping the surface early on at our second stop of the day. We were in 20 feet of gin clear water. Every now and then, I could see that fish were indeed breaking the surface, but just couldn’t dial in as to what type of species it was. There was a lot of debris in the water floating around from a heavy rain a few days earlier. Checking our lines, we had the worms intact which gave us little indication to what was breaking the surface. What were the fish, a little perch, pike, or carp? Finally, Joey, figured out the top surface breakers were garpike. Soon thereafter, our line went off with a hit in one of Keith’s famous crawler harnesses, and Gary the Garpike was hooked. What a catch and landing, as this garpike measures 31.5 inches, just shy of a master angler award, which I was a little disappointed for my son. We put the garpike in the live well to take some pictures. With Gary in the live well and no walleyes to speak of, we decided to head in. Mounting Gary soon became the topic of discussion as he missed out on the maters angler award. On the way to the dock, I recalled that St Clair Taxidermy in Algonac is one of the sponsors of the LSCWA summer kids outing every year and thought that might be the place to take Gary. Not long after that, we dropped the garpike off at St Clair Taxidermy, in Algonac. They did a fantastic job on Gary the Garpike who hangs on our living room wall.

march 2016 tree house Senior get – 2 – getherby David A. Wilemski

March 30’Th at 8:30 AM it was a Charlie good turn–out for our monthly breakfast club get-together. We had 12 hungry individuals participate. Zero grand- children, three women and seven other enjoyed breakfast at Charlie’s Restaurant on Harper in SCS. Our speedy waitress Samantha was excellent at serving our meals etc. However, when I went to take her picture she acted like a paparazzi target. Both pictures were blurred.

We found out about Richards’ eye operation, Eugene’s family problems, Bill & Camille’s window project, Curtis’s lazy new fishing partner (me); and Joan’s hot new lures (she brought along).

Prize winners were #1 Camille, Dale, John Francisco & Joann.

In the picture, left to right are: Bill Houck, Bob Peterson,

Charles Estop, Camille Houck, Judi Ramin (in front); Curtis Patton, Eugene Ramin, Dale Billings, Yours Truly Dave Wilemski (on Dales shoulder), Joann Koch, John Francisco & Richard Koch.

Next tree house is Wednesday April 27, 8:30 AM, Amore’s Grill on East side of Gratiot, #53100 at 24 Mile Rd. See you all there.
