Print the following page twice onto 100gsm smooth white printer paper. Cut out the two ‘Emergency’ buttons and put to one side. Glue the printed pages to A4 white card of 300/350gsm then glue the ‘Emergency’ buttons in the centre of the two A4 cards on the reverse of the printed side. Laminate both sides of the assembled cards using a laminator machine or library book film. Finally cut the A4 cards into the 14 smaller cards (7 on each sheet) usinjg the guide lines on the printed side. Round the corner of all the cards using a small radius corner cutter available at all good craft outlets such as Hobbycraft. These cards are used to do a version of ‘KOPY KAT’ (The Card magic of Nick Trost, page 202) using the theme of locating the two ‘emergency stop’ buttons to halt the increasing gauge pressure. Put the two button cards on the bottom of the 14 card stack. Show the ‘Gauge ‘ cards and false shuffle retaining the button cards on the bottom. Deal the top 7 cards to your spectator whilst you retain the rest. You both put the cards behind your back and mix them. Your mix will consist of putting the bottom card on top and reversing the new bottom card. Bring out your top card face down and ask the spectator to do the same. You both exchange these cards face down and put them on top of the packet behind your backs. Next ask the spectator to reverse his top card and cut the packet. You apparently do the same however all you need to do is cut your cards. You both now bring the cards out from behind your backs and spread them in a fan showing one ‘emergency’ button face up in each pile of face down cards. At this point the spectator may turn over his cards in the suspicion that they are all the same. If he does the also turn you face down cards over to show the blank backs with the words ‘What a good job we both picked the STOP button to halt the pressure!’. If the spectator does not turn his cards then take all the cards, isolate the buttons and turn over the other 12 cards using the same, or similar, comment as above. This effect can be done with many other card combinations and patter themes and is very satisfying from the point of view that all the cards can be freely examined after the effect. I hope you enjoy this version.
