The running of the various groups and the Centre itself relies heavily on volunteers, most of whom now have an average ago of 80. The Weston Centre Management is now pleading for people to come forward to help with the general running of the Centre and give support for the many voluntary groups, particularly the Lunch and Coffee Clubs. The Centre has become an important meeting point and support centre for many residents of Duffield. The Luncheon Club which caters for 18 housebound or elderly residents is essential in ensuring that residents in the area who cannot get out continue to benefit from social interaction. The Club, which is run by volunteers and led by Jean Crowshaw is just one of the facilities run at the Centre. Morning Coffee is provided and served each day by volunteers keen to encourage older residents to come together and mix on an informal basis. This is particularly important for older residents who move into the village to be with family or friends and want to develop their own contacts. Other groups also use the Centre as their base, and are not limited by age, the NCT, and WI both use the Centre, as do the Bridge Club, the Art and Gardening Groups, and Tots Music. It is also a popular venue for children’s parties. Most recently the Parish Council have based their office at the Centre and it is hoped that this too will become a more permanent fixture. The trustees of the Weston Centre would like to encourage more of the residents of Duffield to make use of the facilities and to help with its operation .If you feel you can spare some time, or if you are interested in gaining experience in the care industry please contact the Parish Clerk on 01332 842368 for more details. Dear BarrieHaving lived inDuffield for about 16years, we have noticed adecline in the respect forpeople and theirproperty.I refer especially to thecontinual and deliberatevandalism of fences andhedges, not to mention theChristmas Tree communitylights. One has to ask is this alack of upbringing or

alcohol related.Neither is acceptable.

In these days of knifeculture wouldn’t it besafer to teach theimportance of respect atschool and at home forpeople and property. While they’re at it, teachthem to wrap up chewinggum before putting it in arubbish bin.

The theme for this year’sDuffield Carnival will be“Celebration”.There are a number of villageorganisations celebratingsignificant anniversaries thisyear; notably 50 years of theEcclesbourne School and 40years of Cumberhills Women’sInstitute...it is 100 years sincethe Scout movement wasfounded and 200 years sinceslavery was abolished. No doubt there are others thatwill inspire original fancydress.

The membership of DuffieldCommunity Associationstands at 840 at present andthe response from lastmonth’s article has hadnegligible effect on its effortsto reach the 1000 target. Some staunch supporters haveraised the question as towhether the DCA still meetsthe expectations of thecommunity at large. The DCA was launched in1972 on the back of severalcauses, one of which was the

need to establish a communityhall that did not get built for avariety of reasons.Do we need such a causetoday to stimulate interest andis a community hall still aneed? What are the current issuesfacing Duffield and how mightthe Co mmunity Associationaddress them? The committee will beconsidering these and otherissues at it’s forthcomingmeetings. But please let us know yourviews either through a debatein the ‘Scene’ letters page.Or if you would prefer not togo into print, then a call to theDCA Secretary Derek Cookon 840098 will get yourthoughts recorded fordiscussion.

What next in the range ofbusinesses opening in TownStreet?Estate Agents Smartmove opensthis month (see page 7) but whatof the future of the closedElegante premises?Won’t be long before there’saction again. Our bet...a beauty parlour.

Village jottings The Weston Centre owesitself to the foresight andgenerosity of RichardJames Weston, a wellknown resident of Duffield.who died in 1959.Following the death of hiswife Dorothy in 1981, moneyhe had left in trust becameavailable to the village. As a philanthropist Richardwas keen that a provision forthe older residents of thevillage, particularly thehousebound, should be made. After much deliberation bythe Charity Commission itwas decided that this moneyshould be used to build a daycentre for the over 60’s andtheir partners, and it shouldbe called the RJ Weston DayCentre. The Trustees of the newlyformed R J Weston Trustfound a home for the Centrethanks to the agreement ofthe Royal British Legion. A lease over part of their landwas granted in the early1990’s and this importantfacility was duly located onthe Tamworth Street site.

Richard Hobson, a formerEcclesbourne student, isleading a team of hiscolleagues from SercoAssurance - a rail testcompany - at a Work-In atthe School on SaturdayMarch 3rd.Richard, a manager at Serco, has encouraged his companyto carry out ‘CorporateResponsibility’ work byclearing out the swimmingpool area at the School andtidying up the surroundinggardens.Pupils, parents, well wishersare invited to help outbetween 9.30am - 12.30.Just go along and if you arereading this after the event, call John Minton (843209) tosee if you can help anothertime.

Fancy taking up an unusualbut rewarding hobby? How about violin making?Classes are about to start andif you are interested then callthe Duffield Scene on 841948and we will pass on yourdetails appropriately.

It can helpwith lots of differentdifficulties , ” saysGillian. They include:depression, anxiety, stress, abuse, workrelated issues, relationships, bodyimage difficulties, loss through death, divorce, accidents, redundancy andmany more.“Sometimes peoplefeel unhappy orunfulfilled and don’t knowexactly why... counsellingcan help people understandthemselves better,” saysGillian. She was working for the NHSten years ago as a ComplaintsOfficer - a role that put her intouch with much humandistress. February was anaction packedmonth for usstarting, as it did quiteliterally, with a bang. The main entrance gate to theMillennium Meadow was ram-raided...for fun apparently. Stillat least they put the car back onthe car park before setting fire toit. We have now fitted a steelgate to make it a little bit moredifficult to make entrance!Much more cheerful news.however, relates to thecompetition among the pupils ofEcclesbourne to produce anappropriate design for a woodensculpture to be made at schooland installed on the Meadow. The young teacher Olivia Allen, inspired considerable interest

among the 11-14 agegroup and then some6th formers decided

to join in.At a special committeemeetingOlivia presented theseven entries. We were most impressed by thevariety of ideas and talentsinvolved among the pupils.Photograph shows winningteam and entry with 2nd prizegoing to “Bridge” by KatieLarge and Becky Gill with 3rdplace awarded to “Sitting Jack”by Genevieve Morritt andMelissa Grant.Next month there will be moreabout progress on building thewinning entry plus other plansfor making the Meadow evenmore wildlife friendly.

DUFFIELD - THE VILLAGE OF THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLEHave you noticed that thepeople of Duffield seem to begetting more attractive, looking younger and some ofthem positively blooming.?Worth investigation?Certainly.“My word you do lookwell,”was the opening gambitto try and get on the righttrack and loosen a fewtongues.Wasn’t easy, couldn’t get anynames, but through thenetwork, discovered somerevealing facts ( already knewabout the figures...seen themimproving before my veryeyes among the villagers).Research showed quite clearlythat the citizens of Duffieldare not only becoming awareof health and beauty...they aredoing something about it.More than a thousand folkthroughout the area arecurrently undergoing forms ofbeauty and enhancingtreatment to keep themselveslooking at their best andgiving them renewed pride in

their appearance, and thenumbers are rising by themonth. The skill of Harley Streetsurgeons is being used to:• Remove unsightly eyebags• Give tummy tucks• Facelifts• Breast augmentationand people are getting advice, making their appointmentsand often getting the very besttreatment without goinganywhere near London as topsurgeons are coming to theprovinces to perform theirskills. Hundreds of women, andsome men are seeing topconsultants here in Duffield, getting the very best adviceabout what treatment, if any, best suits the need. The surgeons are regularlyperforming operations inplaces like Birmingham,Nottingham, Manchester andSheffield to widen theirsphere of operations andmaking it easier for patients toget to them.

Many of the othertreatments like:• Vein removal• Unwanted hair•Photo-rejuvenation• Botox• Fillers• Salt A-Peel (taking

off dead skin)are being carried outin the village in amodern surgery usingstate of the art lasersurgery.Dr Suzy Jacob beganher Advanced LaserCare surgery and consultancythree years ago in Town Streetand has built up a client listrunning into hundreds. She guards the identity of herclients with ferocious zeal butadmits that she is more than alittle astonished by thenumber of people going to seeher.“Perhaps I am doing thepeople here a disservicebecause they were quick torealise the hidden as well asthe obvious advantages we

offer.'There is little doubt that thetreatment we offer is a greatstimulant, helps to take awaydepression, lifts the mood andthe number of referrals we getfrom friends of our patientsand doctors etc. clearlyindicate that,” says Dr. Jacob. As one anonymous patientsaid: “I feel so much betterabout myself. Just walkinginto her clinic gives me a liftnow. I know I am in for someserious TLC.”

One of the most pleasantthings about havingthoughtful children is forme, that nowadays, the rolesof parent and child seem tohave been reversed, and it’sus that seem to need lookingafter. My kids think we shouldalways be ‘up and doing’ –perhaps they think we will goto seed or become ‘boringoldies’! Anyway, last Christmas asurprise present came in theform of a little gold box.Inside the box low and beholdwas a jigsaw puzzle. ‘Go on,you’ve got to do it now! You’ve got ten minutes!’Well, we managed it. Andwhat do you think? Surprise, surprise - a three day trip toRome, which manifesteditself in a bookingconfirmation with good oldRyanAir. Whoopee!! Now, to cut a long story alittle shorter, the otherweekend Celia and I flew offto Rome. The Vatican museum was outof this world, as was St.Peters. The weather on theSunday for January was quitewarm with plenty of sun. The Pope came out on hisbalcony at 12 noon to bless usall in St. Peter’s Square – pityhe didn’t bless my walletthough! For the next daydisaster struck … mia culpa! We planned to visit thefamous baths of Caracalla ,the Forum and the Coliseum. The Rome underground washeaving … and I think I waswatched from the moment Itook out my tickets at theentrance to the undergroundstation. They saw me placemy wallet in my back pocketunder my coat. Anyway, wehad to force ourselves into thecarriage – it was such a crush.Suddenly the door openedagain. I felt a push frombehind; I knew at that verymoment that I would neversee my beloved wallet again. The doors closed, the trainstarted, and the thief was on

the platform with my walletof 25 years, waving megoodbye!Stranded in Rome – no cash,no credit cards – lost mydriving licence, the lot! Thank heaven for little girlsthough, because I still hadmy mobile, phoned thedaughter, didn’t I?‘Dad’s in trouble again ‘‘Never mind Pop, I’ll cancelyour credit cards for youand send you some cashthrough Western Union’. Great, because one hour laterwe’d got some cash. Our next stop had to be theCaribineri to at least get acrime number if only to claimsome cash back on theinsurance. 40 pounds Sterlingand around £250 in Euros. ‘Please – fill out form threetimes,’ said the Caribanarireceptionist.’We filled in the forms and satwaiting for ages.

‘Toiletta per favour?’ I cried –all to no avail – ‘Nofunctionare!’ came the reply. Iwas busting!! Finally we were led into anoffice. Two caribineri dressedup like turkey cocks satbehind a large desk. Theyinspect my forms. ‘Where you from?’‘England’ I said. ‘Your name?’.‘England’ I said.

‘No, no – where you born?’‘Derby’, I said.‘Where Derby?’.‘England’, I said. He’s getting angry now. ‘No, no! Name please?’I’m getting to know theproblem by now. It happenedbefore in Cuba! Don’t know much Italian, so Itry my poor Spanish. ‘Mi nombre esta England.’‘Yo vivo in Englatera’.‘Si, si! Your name isEngland.

BRAVISSIMO!’The Chief studied the formagain, looked at me again, and then looked at the stampsitting on the pad. I knewthen that the interview wasabout to end.Bang! Down went the stamp. The officer jumped upquickly, waved his hands atus, and shooed us out of theoffice with a ‘you can go!’Just when I thought things

couldn’t get any worse, thelast day of the holiday came.Off we go to CiampinoAirport and arrived indepartures – WHAT??!!!‘I don’t believe it’. Ryan Air,Flight 3620 to EMA,cancelled. ‘No, no!’I got to know Ciampino quitewell! Twelve hours later, weeventually arrived not atEMA, but at Stansted for anovernight stay, then by trainfrom Luton to Derby. Then the shuttle to pick upmy car from EMA parking. Now comes the last straw Ithought. I’ve lost my parkingticket as well – go to thebarrier and plead down themic. ‘Please let me out – I’ve beenrobbed in Rome – lost all mymoney – credit cards, the lot– and I just want to go home’.Then came a chirpy voiceover the intercom. ‘Don’tworry Sir; you’re not the firstplonker with that story today.I’ll lift the barrier for you.Have a good journey home’. A feeling of total relaxationcame over me as I drove outof the airport and visions ofthe large whisky which waswaiting for me at home.‘Arrividerci Roma!’

CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL IN DUFFIELD

You may recall that an alcohol designation order for Duffield, preventing the consumption of alcohol in the street, was beingconsidered by Amber Valley Borough Council. Following consultation with Residents, the Police, the ParishCouncil and other interested parties this designation order wasapproved by Cabinet on 31st January 2007. The areas affected by the order are Grays Recreational Ground,Town Street from the junction of King Street to its northernjunction with Makeney Road, Wirksworth Road from TownStreet to Park Road, Tamworth Street, Holloway Road, SnakeLane, King Street from Town Street to Castle Hill and ChapelStreet. Notices will soon be placed along the zone informing residentson this change of status.

*********************************************APPROVAL FOR RELEASE OF S106 MONIES

The Parish Council have for a number of months beenresearching and planning the new play facility on GraysRecreational Ground. Following responses received from residents of all ages, we arepleased to report that quotes and plans from reputable suppliersare expected within the month. To support this program Amber Valley has agreed to the initialrelease of funds held by them under s106 funding. This money, which is donated by developers to help support theinfrastructure of the village, will go some way to covering thecosts of the new facility. Duffield Parish Council is one of the first Parish Councils totake advantage of this scheme directly and will be furtherconsulting with parishioners on the final outcome.

In addition to the Grays Recreational Scheme, the Youthworking group is continuing to push ahead with proposal todevelop a Youth Community Centre. This group, which is working independently from the ParishCouncil, is currently looking at funding opportunities for this projectin addition to the s106 funds identified as a possible source. If you are interested in becoming involved with this group pleasecontact the Clerk who would be happy to pass on your details.

Following extensive lobbying by the Parish Council toDerbyshire County Council and Amber Valley Boroughconcerning the flooding of footpath 12 on at the top ofHolloway Road, the Parish Council are pleased to reportthat the land owner has agreed to undertake work toresolve the problem.

***********************************************

A meeting between the Parish Council and DerbyshireHighways Authority has resulted in new markings beingplaced at the bottom of King Street. Residents are reminded that the disabled crossing point at thislocation, as with others throughout the village, have beeninstalled because they are needed. BEWARE FOREIGN ACCENTED CHANGE SEEKERSI recently heard that a man,who spoke with an EasternEuropean accent, wasapproaching elderly ladieson Town St asking forchange. He then walked towards thestation and approached anelderly gentleman. The gentleman was asked ifhe could change some £1coins and, as he took out hiswallet the man made a grabfor it. Fortunately the gentlemanwas ‘on the ball’ and the mandid not get away withanything. I understand that the man wasnot working alone, whichmeans that this was not justan opportunistic attempt tograb some cash. I know people wish to help, iffor example someone requireschange, but please do thinkabout your own safety. There is always the option topolitely decline and keeppurses or wallets tuckedaway.

This incident happened earlyone weekday afternoon inDuffield and serves to remindus all to be vigilant at alltimes.Derbyshire police arewarning motorists not toleave their vehiclesunattended while theydefrost the windscreen. The alert comes after two carswere stolen from drivewayswhen the engine was leftrunning to warm up the car.In each case the driver hadgone back into his home andleft the engine running andwhen he came back a fewmoments later the car hadbeen stolen. Officers advise that anyonewho needs to warm-up the caror defrost their vehicle’swindows should stay with itat all times while the engineis switched on.Please do report (non-serious)crimes and incidents to thepolice on 0845 123 33 33 (forserious crimes use 999). I am aware incidents occur

and I’m also aware that theyare not always reported. There are a couple of reasonsfor this: one is ‘the policewon’t do anything about itand I’m wasting my time’ andthe other is ‘I don’t like towaste their time becausethey’re busy’. To the first I do agree thatthey will not necessarilycome out, but the incidentswill be recorded and it maybe that the information isacted upon as another pieceof the jigsaw that helps toconvict someone or nipssomething in the bud thatmay have escalated in thefuture. As regards the ‘police arebusy people’ well it’s theirjob. If the police do not know thatthese crimes are happeningthey assume that all is well

and for certain nothing willthen be done and it couldescalate I am weary of beingtold by the police that ‘hardlyanything happens in Duffield’– we Duffield residents knowotherwise!I know that crimes andincidents affect differentpeople in different ways but ifit is of concern to you then itmay well be of concern toothers. Let’s try and make adifference together.
