PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Volunteering Celebration It was a delight to attend the Inner West Neighbourhood Aid Celebration for Senior Citizens’ Week with our Year 10 volunteers and Ms Gorton on Wednesday. The event celebrated the work done by the organisation and the leadership of the boys. Guests at the event were mostly all over the age of 92 years old with many centenarians attending. As part of the volunteering program the boys assist the senior citizens to maintain their independence through shopping. It is a wonderful leadership opportunity of the boys which really develops their confidence, social skills and intergenerational understanding.

Rebecca Welling-

Mobile Phones Lots of the boys in Year 7 appear to have been bought new mobile phones to coincide with their travel to “big school”. When used appropriately these are a great way of keeping in touch with your son. However they can also be a huge distraction, especially for many boys of this age who struggle with the maturity to use them properly. Use of mobile phones in class is not permitted unless sanctioned by the teacher for an educational purpose. Could I please ask that you do not call your son throughout the school day or ask him to call you. If there is a family emergency please contact the school the old fashioned way! It’s always best that bad news is delivered to kids by an adult rather than over the phone. Vehicle Safety I have been asked to remind parents about safety when driving their sons to school by the police at Ashfield LAC. The police will be conducting a campaign targeting school zones, speeding and illegal parking.

Students of 7 Tao made posters to celebrate Pi day.

Pi day is celebrated on March 14 (3.14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter ) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant-the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter-which is approximately 3.14159……

'Feeling Connected' by presenting their public speaking skills to each other! The task has made up the final assessment for the topic and has provided a platform for the boys to connect with each other's past experience and their personal interpretations of the variety of text-types studied in class. The boys have worked hard in showcasing their analytical skills, yet have also ignited the spark of a creative flare in our English classroom.

QUICK MENTAL PRACTICE

Students in 7 White are practising mental calculations to prepare them for the topic of Integers. Not only are they practising addition and subtraction mentally, they are learning to work with constraints and conditions given in puzzles. Students realise that checking the correctness of each answer is essential in finishing the magic square puzzles. In other puzzles such as the number maze, they can see that multiple routes and combination of numbers can reach the same result.

You can only move in two directions, right or

down. You add the numbers in the boxes

you pass through. Enter from the top left and

exit through the bottom right.

Find a path which gives you:

a) a total of 24.

b) the largest total.

c) the smallest total.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

Last Friday, Year 7 was torn away from the thrills of English to do their bit for Clean Up Australia Day! Despite the grimness of the weather, the school grounds were filled with a sea of bright, white hands and eager smiles as the team worked towards a break area that was cleared of their forgotten lunch scraps. Looking forward, the experience inspired the class to resolve their responsibility to care for their environment by being mindful of their waste, and educating others as well

ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Last Thursday the Zone Swimming Carnival was held at Olympic Park. Despite having the smallest squad, all our boys performed to the best of their ability. The standout was Connor Anagnostopoulos who finished second in 50m breaststroke. As a result, he will represent our school at the Regional swimming carnival that will be held next Friday at Olympic Park.

Our best basketball team lost to Killarney Heights HS, in round two Sydney North knockout competition. The opponent had a great start scoring the first seven points of the game and gradually increasing the lead. Half- way through the first half our boys lifted in defence preventing the other team to score for six minutes.

However, we did not fully capitalise on this great defence as we still struggled to score points. At the start of the second half, our coach Mr Dobrowolski decided to give all players a chance to play as the game was already out of our reach. "Despite the loss this was a great experience and I look forward to representing our school next year as well" said Alan He, Year 11 student.

A MOUNTAIN TOO HIGH TO CLIMB

FOOTBALL GALA DAY

The second SNWSSA football Gala day was held at Blackman Park, Lane Cove. Our team drew two games (Homebush 1-1, Asquith 1-1) and lost the third game 2-0 to Epping. The standout player was Caelan Hinckson who dominated in attack with his superb speed and technique. Ahmad Al Hassan's debut will be long remembered as he managed to score a magnificent goal, though in his own net. Next Thursday our team will play against Davidson HS in a first round of Sydney North knockout competition.
