Happy New Year! I hope everyone has made memories with friends and family that they can cherish for years to come. It’s nice to come back in January to see all the familiar faces and hear all the stories of exciting events during the winter holiday time. We are continuing with our theme of growth mindset and January’s mantra is: “Feedback is a gift accept it.” Annie Brock and Heather Hundley’s book The Growth Mindset Coach indicates that when giving feedback, we need to distinguish between praising the person and praising the process. If only praising the person, people will want to accomplish tasks that they are sure to be able to do so they can “look smart at all costs”. Praising the person, has children believing their success is directly linked to their intelligence and when they fail, their self - confidence crumbles. However, if you praise the process such as “Great strategy; that took some creative problem solving”, “Hard is good! It means you’re learning”, students are more likely to take on new challenges and display growth mindset. Even better than offering praise, is sitting with your child as they work through a task. “Whenever you can replace praise with getting involved, do it!” - Dweck Ms. J. “Feedback is a gift—accept it.” Annie Brock and Heather Hundley’s book The Growth Mindset Coach indicates that when giving feedback, we need to distinguish between praising the person and praising the process. If only praising the person, people will want to accomplish tasks that they are sure to be able to do so they can “look smart at all costs”. Praising the person, has children believing their success is directly linked to their intelligence and when they fail, their self-confidence crumbles. Now that the weather has turned colder, students

are reminded to dress warm and not to arrive at

school in the morning much before 8:45 a.m. unless

they are attending the Breakfast Program.

When windchill values reach minus 25, students will

be allowed to come in and wait in the foyers.

Indoor recesses will be held during these

temperatures as well.

The responsibility and authority not to open

schools because of severe weather rests with the

Superintendent in consultation with the

Transportation Supervisor. Announcements will

normally be made before 7:00 a.m. on many of the

local radio stations. Information will also be posted

on the divisional website: www.srsd.mb.ca .

In the event of adverse conditions arising during the

course of the school day, school will remain open.

Students will not be transported home. If adverse

conditions exist in the afternoon, a decision may be

taken not to operate school buses. An announcement

to this effect would be made to the media by 3:00

p.m.. Parents may pick up their children at the

school.

It is imperative that the school has your current contact information i.e. Home/Work/Cell phone numbers. Please remember

to call the school when these numbers change.

All visitors, including parents, must report to the main office upon entering the school. We ask that parents do not go

straight to their child’s classroom. If you are dropping something off for your child, please leave it at the office, and we

will make sure your child gets it. If you are coming to pick up your child before dismissal, please report to the office to sign

them out and we will call your child down. If you are picking up your child at the end of the day, please wait for them in the

front foyer.

If your child will be absent, we ask that you, the parent/guardian, call the school by 9:00 a.m. If you do not let us know that

your child will be absent, we must call you to verify the absence.

If your child is a bus student, you must also call the Transportation Department (204-422-6222) to let them know your

child will not be on the bus.

If your child arrives late for school, they must report to the office for a late slip.

The most common food allergies in children are: peanuts/nuts, milk, eggs, shell fish and wheat. Please be aware we have

students with life threatening allergies in our school. Please avoid sending food to school that contain peanuts/nuts,

shell fish.

As well, some of our students and staff suffer from asthma and other respiratory conditions. Students/Staff should

refrain from using strong perfume and deodorant sprays in the school.

Calling all singers! LBC is blessed to have many fine singers, evidenced by the work being done for the musical! We would love to have many more of them join our choir in January in preparation for the concert. This year we have sung a variety of music, from choral pop to music from places like Zimbabwe and Finland! Currently we have a hard-working and talented but very small choir that would benefit from the support of their classmates and friends. Please come out every Day 3 at lunch recess and lift your voice with ours!

This year we focused on skill development in the first few months of the year,

working diligently in our music method book. The pieces students learned were

typically in unison meaning everyone played the same thing. In the new year, we will

begin applying that knowledge to specific pieces of performance music that has

multiple parts so students can see how their instrument fits into the ensemble. While

there is usually an adjustment period when we do this, it is very rewarding once the

blend starts coming together!

Basketball season is upon us, with the Gr.7/8 Boys and Girls teams having been decided and practices now in full swing. The regular season for both teams will begin in mid-January. Exhibition games will also be held throughout the season.

Grade seven and eight dodge ball intramurals will be held during noon hour, beginning in January as well. Thanks to Ms. Fogg for heading them up!

On Thursday, December 21st, we played a student vs staff floor hockey game over the noon hour. Everyone had a fun time, with students scoring some goals against staff, but ultimately coming up short of winning. Next time students :)
