Our Mission: Working Together to Build a Culture of Student Success
Welcome to the electronic edition of the Clarion. Due to several changes in our
administrative office, we are sending an electronic version of the Clarion for
October only. We will resume our regular hardcopy version in November. The
opening of school through October has been a busy time for us. We started with
ten new teachers, five new administrative assistants, one new security monitor,
and over twenty para-professionals. If you get a chance to meet any of the new
staff members, please welcome them to our community! Based on my experience
last year, I can confidently share that we enjoy a high level of support from our
parents and the community.
This year, we embarked on a couple of initiatives that will impact the education of
your child. The first is the refresh of our school improvement plan (SIP). A school
improvement plan is a guide used to set our achievement goals on a three-year
cycle. This year, we are busy drafting the new SIP that will guide us for the next
three years, 2019-2022. The critical components of a SIP are the overall
graduation rate, ninth grade (credit) on-track rate, dual credit completion rate,
attendance rate, and discipline rate. These areas will be monitored and reported
to the state to measure the performance of our school. Once the draft is
completed, we will share our goals with the school community.
The second major initiative is social-emotional learning (SEL). In conjunction
with the district-wide rollout of SEL training for all staff, we also implemented
School-Connects SEL with Keeth Matheney. According to the Office of
Superintendent and Public Instruction (2019), SEL is “is broadly understood as a
process through which individuals build awareness and skills in managing
emotions, setting goals, establishing relationships, and making responsible
decisions that support success in school and in life. When we think of educating
the whole child, their social and emotional development must be considered as a
part of overall instruction.” Kamiak’s journey into SEL just started this fall and
was met with much enthusiasm from our staff. We will keep you posted as we
continue to implement and practice the best strategies.
Finally, to assist in the monitoring of student's academic progress, teachers are required to update their grades twice a month. Please use the Family Access portal at this link to see your student's current grades. If you have any questions about the grades that your student cannot answer, please make sure to contact the teacher directly.

What is the Kamiak ASB?
The Kamiak Associated Student Body, or ASB, is a
student-governed organization. Every student at Kamiak
has a place to belong, thanks in great part to ASB
programs. So please encourage your student to
participate in some of our dozens of clubs, many sports
teams, four dances, and any of the hundreds of events
that will happen during the 2019-20 school year!
Membership Has Its Privileges! At $40 (just $1 per school week!) an ASB card is a great bar-
gain for students. It provides free entry to all home sporting
events, discounted dance tickets and yearbooks, school club
memberships, and a chance to participate in school athlet-
ics. Mukilteo School District does not have a “pay to play”
policy, a student only needs to purchase ASB to partici-
pate in any number of sports. In short, a paid ASB mem-
bership is an affordable way for students to connect to all
the great things happening outside the academic day at Ka-
miak!
to the volunteers that helped us for August business days! We couldn’t
have done it without YOU!!
Is Your Student an ASB Member? Be Sure Their Kamiak Student ID Card Has the ASB Sticker Many students paid for their ASB membership during
Athletic Clearance week or during Business Week. We're
finding that many of these students forgot to get an ASB
sticker (like the one shown below for their Kamiak ID card.
Please ask to see your student's card, and verify that their
card is now a Kamiak ASB card (with an ASB sticker)and
not simply a Kamiak "ID Only" card. If your student paid
for an ASB designation sticker but did not receive it, your
student should bring their ID card to the bookkeeping
office.

Spotlight on Students
KAMIAK LEADERSHIP This year Leadership students have a goal to increase recognition of all groups at Kamiak including sports, performing arts, and clubs. We also want to focus on building relationships and connections with the student body. Over the summer, many leadership students attended a five day leadership camp where we connected with school across Washington, refined our leadership skills, and generated new ideas to bring back to Kamiak. We are hoping to start new and fun traditions this year at Kamiak including a ping pong tournament and a 3 v 3 basketball game. We are also excited to look at revamping ideas like the Winter Ball to make it even more fun and inclusive. By listening to the student body and getting their feedback on events, we are hoping to create more ways for students to be involved. The Homecoming Pep Assembly on Oct. 14th was a huge success with performances by Barbershop, Cheer, Dance, and three staff members in a fashion show. Our annual Homecoming parade was held at Goddard Stadium this year just before the Homecoming football game. Making this change allowed us to get more students involved and we packed the stands to support our team. The dance sold out at over 1,000 tickets and was an evening of fun for everyone. Up next, we are working on the Veteran’s Day assembly, planning a Leadership conference for 1,000 students, and starting the plans for our next pep assembly (which is on Dec. 9th). We are also working with Volunteers of America to coordinate our annual Hope Holiday Drive.
2020 National Merit Semifinalists
Congratulations to the five Kamiak students who were named Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship
Program. There are approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 65th National Merit Scholarship Program. These
academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500
National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a
Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the
competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the
Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
Congratulations to: Aya Alayli, Aaron Banh, Sandar Molnar, Tyler Vold & Casey Zhao.
2020 National Merit Program Commended Students
Kamiak has 23 National Merit Commended Students! Congratulations to the following students who were recently named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. They placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the PSAT their Junior year. INSPIRING ATHLETES Elli Straume is the Senior Captain of the Swim team who is aspiring to become state champion. You can see her in the 200 free and 500 free at District and State. When we asked her who inspired her, this is what she had to say: “The up and coming athlete who inspires me
the most is Eleanor Whalen. She is a swimmer who works extremely hard and always has a great attitude. She is a great teammate, you can see her in the 500 freestyle, a show of perseverance. She stays after practice and does extra to prepare”.

Stay in the Know
RED RIBBON WEEK October 21-25
“The Story behind the Symbol” During the week of October 21, we’ll celebrate Red Ribbon week. Do you know why? Enrique “KiKi” Camarena grew up in poverty, but always hoped and dreamed of making a difference in the world. When he decided to join the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother told him not to. “I’m only one person, but I want to make a difference” KiKi stated. The DEA sent KiKi to Mexico to investigate a major drug cartel. On February 7, 1985, 37 year old KiKi left his office for lunch when five men shoved him in a car. A month later, his body was found in a shallow grave. He had been tortured to death. In honor Mr. Camarena’s memory and his battle against illegal drugs, friends and neighbors began wearing red ribbons. Coalitions across the U.S. joined them as a symbol that one person can make a difference. Students are asked to join this celebration to visibly take a stand against alcohol, drug use and abuse by wearing red. Knights In Action will also be handing out red ribbons to students during lunch.
Kamiak PTO partners with Kaplan Test
Prep to prepare students for college entrance exams. A full-
length Mock ACT and a full-length Mock SAT will be offered at
Kamiak and are identical to the actual college entrance
exams. These are the final mock test opportunities at Kamiak
for this academic year, so plan accordingly! They are
professionally proctored and scored, but the scores are not
reported anywhere. So it's the absolute best, no-risk way for
students to get an accurate idea of what the real test experience
is like. Your student can determine how they'll perform on the
actual test and if they would benefit from further preparation
to raise their scores. Students use their smart phones or home
computer to get immediate results after taking these tests. All
mock test fees are $30 for students who preregister and $35
for walk-ups, as space permits. All proceeds go right back to
Kamiak students. For more info about SAT/ACT testing dates,

Textbook News – Fall 2019: Avoid textbook/novel fines:
• Keep track of your book always – don’t leave it behind!
• Protect the inside and outside of the book – cover it (a pa-
per grocery bag makes a very effective book cover). Do not dog ear pages or write in it.
• Clean your backpack – Keep books away from food, dirt, spilt items, etc.
• Carry an umbrella – Keep textbooks/novels dry and stain free. Remember to shake out and store wet items away from your books.
Brand new, damaged books carry the stiffest fines! This year these books include: Calculus AB & BC, Statistics, and 2nd semester’s Comprehensive Health
If you have concerns about the textbook you receive, report them immediately to Lab 317, to avoid fines being placed on your account.
The Facts Parents Should Know About Marijuana Marijuana is a highly addictive drug. Teens who start using marijuana before the age of fourteen are fours time more likely to become addicted as an adult. Adolescents make the mistake of believing marijuana will help them with their symptoms of ADHD or anxiety, and improve their focus in school. But in reality, youths who use marijuana can have:
• Memory impairment
• Distorted thinking or irrational thoughts
• Paranoia
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Suicidal thoughts
• Permanent decrease in IQ with prolonged use
• School Failure Marijuana use can seriously affect adolescent brain
development
How Can Parents Prevent Teens from Using Marijuana One reason teens choose not to use marijuana is because their parents don’t approve of it. Parents should have ongoing conversations about the use of drugs. Role play situations where your child may be offered marijuana by a peer and give them scenarios to refuse the offers. Let your child know it is OK to walk away from anyone who is offering drugs and if needed to call for a ride to get away from the situation. Set clear guidelines with your teen about healthy behaviors and expectations. Provide consequences for not meeting guidelines and provide compliments for good choices and healthy behaviors. Keep track of your child by monitoring their behaviors, remaining involved in your child’s life, and networking with other parents in order to support each other. Keep lines of communication open with your child by having dinner together and doing fun family activities. Role model for your child the behaviors you’d like them to portray. If your child breaks the rules stay calm and communicate with them in a nonjudgmental way. Avoid overreacting to a situation.

Freshman Counselors emphasized time management and prioritizing school work.
Sophomores Counselors emphasized programs available next year (Sno-Isle, Running Start, PSAT) and the holistic view of college applications.
Juniors Counselors met with all juniors to discuss 5 year plans including college choices and post high school planning. Emphasis will be placed on the junior timeline and how to stand out in a college or work application.
ACADEMIC COACHES Academic Coaches is a (free!) peer coaching program that
provides academic help and support to the Kamiak
community. An Academic Coach could be useful for students
who need:
• someone to explain directions or break down steps
• help establishing good study skills
• assistance with the writing process
• a study buddy to help guide them through assignments
• extra explanation of complex concepts
• a safe and welcoming environment in which to work
• a supportive, positive academic role model Students can take advantage of Academic Coaching in two ways:
Study Zone is staffed with Academic Coaches to
provide academic support in virtually all subject areas.
Students can drop by for help in the Kamiak library from
2-3 PM, Monday through Thursday.
1-on-1 Coaching is for students who would like a
consistent coach in a specific subject area(s). After the
initial match-up meeting in the Kamiak library, the coach
and student are responsible for scheduling coaching
sessions, including when and where meetings will take
place (either the Kamiak or Mukilteo library). Students
can ask for a 1-on-1 Coach Request Form in the library or
from their teacher or counselor.
Please contact Mrs. Schwenn in the library with any questions
"When Do I Contact a Counselor?" Kamiak's counselors are a great resource for students and their parents/guardians. Contact your student's counselor if you have questions about four year plans, waivers, credit status, or college prep — or if your child has a learning disability, or other issues affecting their academic progress or need social or emotional support. Counselors can also answer your questions about pre-college testing, such as the PSAT, ACT and SAT. Call or email to set up an appointment. Our friendly experts are here to help!

Keeping our Families Informed
Kamiak Attendance Procedures
Phone: (425)-366-5460 Email Address: [email protected]
✓ Excused absences must be reported within 48 hours of
the absence.
✓ Early dismissals must check out with attendance before leaving campus.
✓ Please update your contact information as needed.
✓ If your student becomes ill during the school day, they must go to the nurse’s office, (not the attendance office) for dismissal or drive themselves off campus.
✓ If an individual class absence is received either in error or while student was with counselor, nurse, etc., students should pick up a form from attendance to take to applicable teacher for clearance. Attendance cannot make change without verification from the teacher/nurse/counselor.
Notes, phone messages or emails to the Attendance Office must have the following required information:
1) Student’s first & last name (please spell last name); 2) Date(s) of absence (not “today”, but specific date); 3) Reason for the absence, late arrival or early dismissal; 4) Your name (and signature on notes) and a phone
number where you can be reached.
Is your child leaving school early for an appointment? Here’s the best way to excuse your child:
1) Send your student to the attendance office before school with a note (or send email or call) with the required information above.
2) Students receive a dismissal pass from attendance to show the teacher.
3) At the noted dismissal time, students bring dismissal pass to the attendance office and sign-out.
4) They are then free to meet parent in the front of the school.
Thank you for your cooperation!
TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS:
To request a transcript go to the Kamiak High School website
and under Quick Links select “Transcript Request”. You will
be redirected to Parchment, Mukilteo School District’s
electronic transcript service. Transcripts will be sent directly
to the college/university admission’s office or to the location of
your choice.
The KAP program is an academic intervention program
that teachers and counselors access to help your student
be successful. When a student is assigned to KAP, attend-
ance is mandatory from 2:07-3:00 pm on the assigned
days. We appreciate your support in helping your student
prioritize submitting all work assigned, making up missed
tests, catching up from absences, and staying organized
so he/she can be released from this KAP require-
ment. Students can ride the activity bus home at 4 pm.
Thanks for supporting your student!
KAMIAK AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (KAP)
TEXTBOOKS ARE EXPENSIVE The value of our textbooks ranges from as little as a few dollars to as much as $250 per book. Each year, Kamiak issues fines for damage to textbooks. Many of these fines could be avoided using three easy strategies: 1) Cover the textbooks: A durable book cover helps prevent
damage to the textbook and prolongs the life of the book. 2) Clean out backpacks: A little spoiled food in a backpack
can cause a lot of damage to textbooks, especially over time.
3) Use an umbrella: Water damage to books is a leading cause for fines. If you use an umbrella, shake it out and store umbrellas away from textbooks.
Student Technology Assistance: Mrs. Baxter, in Lab 317, helps students resolve their technology
concerns. Becoming locked out of their school account, for
unknown reasons, is a common problem after their school
password is changed. Not only do students need to change/
update their passwords at school, but they also need to ‘forget’
their former password on their personal device(s) if they have
ever used them to access their school account. On each personal
device (especially cell phones), students should:
1) Access their wifi settings
2) 2) Click on MukilteoSD
3) 3) ‘Forget’ the network.
Students may visit Mrs. Baxter in Lab 317 with questions.
