PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN Volume – I May 2014 – August 2014 It is very important to understand that our education system is different from the developed countries and hence it is vital to bring in the changes that will give us the momentum to find a place in the global scenario. And in this venture Govt. and public both should work hand-in-hand to support each other and look for the required upliftment of education. We need to recognize that the knowledge, skills and productivity of our growing young and dynamic work force form the backbone of our economy and the greatest challenge in our education system today is to provide skill based education to the youth. Hence it is of utmost importance to ensure that our education system has to be sustainable and should be equipped to meet the challenges in the industry in terms of quality of education imparted within the four walls of the classroom and labs, uplifting the quality of teachers and upholding the ethics of education. It is time we discover the extraordinary from the ordinary. Without getting entrapped in the phantom ego- self, we need to ask ourselves “Am I doing my best? Is there something more I can contribute to make my institution excel and improve the quality of life of every member of the society?” I am extremely delighted to share with you the tremendous appreciation and encouragement I received from officials and others on our venture of publishing the first edition of RIT NEWSLETTER. In their views it had the sum and substance presenting the earnest endeavours from RIT fraternity. PRINCIPAL’S COLUMN

Volume – I May 2014 – August 2014

It is very important to understandthat our education system isdifferent from the developedcountries and hence it is vital tobring in the changes that will giveus the momentum to find a place inthe global scenario. And in thisventure Govt. and public bothshould work hand-in-hand tosupport each other and look for therequired upliftment of education. We

and advanced Integrated Library System software, in theCentral Library of RIT. Koha, an Open source and free softwarewith extensive library management facilities has replaced theproprietary software which was being used for many years.

Dept. advisory board meetings were held in CSE, ECEand EEE. The members who attended the meetings wereeminent personalities of prolific experience representingindustries, R&D and academia.

The Department of Architecture started in the year 2011underwent their first inspection conducted by the Council ofArchitecture, NewDehi (the apex body governing Architecturaleducation in the country) for extension of Approval. TheCouncil of Architecture has granted extension of approval forthree years and commented on the very high quality ofacademics imparted in the Department which was evidencedthrough the excellent works presented by the students ofArchitecture.

SOME OF THE TRAININGPROGRAMMES

STTP on “Data Analysis and Modeling Techniques forEngineering Research” was organized during June 17-20, 2014in Dept. of Civil Engg.

STTP on Research Avenues in Operations Management wasorganized by Department of Mechanical Engineering from July8-14, 2014. The coordinators were Dr. R. Sasikumar andSwapnesh S. The programme was sponsored by TEQIP.

STTP on Modern trends in substation design was conductedfrom June 24-26, 2014 and coordinated by Shanifa Beevi S. &Peter K. Abraham of EEE Department.

In the Civil Engg. Dept., Shiv Nagendra, Associate Professor,IIT Madras engaged classes on Air Pollution and Traffic PollutionModeling on 23rd August 2014 for PG students. Hands ontraining were given to students using Traffic Pollution Modelingsoftwares.

In the Department of Electronics and Communication, a talkby Dr.John.P.Zachariah, Deputy Director,VSSC,TVM wasarranged on the topic “ Indian Space transportation systemspresent and future” on 18th July 2014. Another expert talkwas by Dr. Elizabeth Elias from NIT Calicut was arranged on19th July on the topic “Multirate systems and Filter banks”.

EXPERT LECTURESDr. Binumol Tom, Head of the Department of Architecturedelivered a lecture in the capacity of an expert speaker onthe topic “Research in Architecture” on 9th July 2014 duringthe 5 day Teachers Training Program scheduled from 7th Julyto 11th July 2014 conducted at Pune by the National Instituteof Advanced Studies in Architecture, the academic unit of theCouncil of Architecture, New Delhi.

She also deliberated on “Urban conservation - problems andprospects” at Goethe Institute in Chennai on 22nd of August2014 in connection with Madras week celebrations organizedby Hindustan University, Chennai.

Dr. Leena Mary was granted Rs. 12.5 lakhs by KSCSTE forForensic Speaker Recognition project.

A research project titled “Study of vehicular emissions undervarying road and traffic conditions” was sanctioned to Dr. BinoI. Koshy and Dr. Bindhu B.K by Transportation ResearchCouncil for Rs.11,000,00/.

Mr. P. A. Padmakumar, System Analyst was nominated byDirector of Technical Education as an Expert Member in the E-Governance Project under Higher education Department.

A one day workshop on Report writing & Presentation wasorganized by the Dept. of Mechanical Enginering on 30/06/14 and was co-ordinated by Dr. Biju Augustine, AssociateProfessor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Mr. Raveendran, 1st Grade Instructor of Dept. of Civil Engg.retired from service at RIT. RIT wishes him the very best inhis retired life. We will miss you.

STUDENT ACTIVITIESNidhinRaj P of S5 ME secured first prize for wild life weekcelebration district level elocution. He was also selected tothe final panel of contestants for the reality show CitizenReporter 2014.

Roshima Babu and Roshitha Babu of S7 ECE won first prizein Paper Presentation Contest at HORIZON-14,technocultural fest at St.Gits College of Engg, Kottayam.

The students of Architecture attended the zonal NASA (NationalAssociation of Student competitions held at HindusthanUniversity, Chennai from 27th to 29th June 2014and baggedmany prizes. Ar. Tessy Varkey and Ar. Nidhish P J facultymembers of the department accompanied the students.

CELEBRATIONS

Onam Celebrations at RIT.Onam was celebrated with all pomp by every RITian. Therewere athapookkalam competitions and many Onam relatedgames conducted for the staff members as well as the students.The celebration came to an end with a grand Onam Sadhya.
