Principal’s Message Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of St Joseph’s College, A very warm welcome to the first newsletter of 2019. I trust that all families enjoyed some valuable and relaxing time together over the Christmas and summer period and are really looking forward to an incredible 2019. A particularly special welcome to all of our Year 7 and new families to the SJC community; we hope that your time with us is very rewarding and we are confident that your child will reach their highest potential.
Matthew 25:35
“ For I was a stranger and you welcomed me” During our commencement meetings and assemblies, I impressed upon all members of our SJC community the importance of taking Jesus’ message here and putting it into action. Not only are there new members to our student body, but we have a number of new staff members who also need a warm and caring welcome. I would like to extend this welcome to Mrs Antonia Pratt (Music/Literacy and Numeracy/Music Ministry), Mr Eamon Brown (Maths/PDHPE), Mr Nick O’Reilly (Maths Term 1), Mr Danny Shaw (College Youth Minister), Mrs Natalie Williams (Teacher Aide), Ms Monique Burns (Sport Trainee) and Ms Keely Smith (TAS Trainee). We look forward to benefiting from the many skills and gifts these people bring to our College.
COMMUNICATION CHANNELS The successful education of any child requires the close collaboration of three key parties: the student, teacher and family. To do this effectively, there must be good communication between all three. Over the next week, all teachers will be sending a general email to the families of students they teach as a welcome and to provide a point of contact. Throughout the year, teachers will also email families regarding upcoming assignments and relevant news from their class or the year group. This is to ensure that when you need to contact your child’s teacher, subject leader or year coordinator, with affirmations or considerations, you have an email sitting in your inbox. If issues do arise, please remember that the staff member closest to the issue should be the first person you contact, either by phone or email. Should you require further assistance, families should contact either the Year Coordinator or the Leader of Learning for that subject area. All these positions are listed on the College website (here). Matters of urgency can be directed to the Leader of Curriculum or Leader of Student Wellbeing and Pastoral Care (depending on their relevant nature), and if they are of an extremely serious nature, the matter will be directed to the Assistant Principal or Principal. If you are calling the College, you will usually be greeted by either of our welcoming, kind and patient office staff members, Ms Leea Kenny or Mrs Jane Joseph. As we are a large organisation, both Leea and Jane will do their best to direct your call to relevant staff members and as such, only require a small amount of information. While many general queries will be answered by them, subject or incident specific inquiries will need to be answered by an appropriate teaching staff or Leadership Team member. I also ask for your patience when dealing with matters as sometimes, teacher timetables are not permissive of an immediate response.

If you choose to email a staff member, please understand that there is no obligation for staff members to be responding well into the evening or over the weekend. Many teachers spend their evenings preparing for lessons and marking student work and 24-hour access is not part of their expected duties. All emails will be answered within a reasonable timeframe. The College will also make use of the Skoolbag app to disseminate information and assignments. We will also post positive information on our Facebook page. Please ensure you have downloaded and ‘liked’ these two respectively. Finally, please let it be known that parents are always welcome to attend masses, liturgies and celebratory assemblies at the College.
SchoolTV This is an invaluable resource for parents and carers. Our College subscribes to this and there is an array of informative posts that take the form of short videos, articles and resources. Please take some time to look through what this site has to offer (here). Prominent child psychologist and media personality Michael Carr-Gregg is a patron and contributor to the site.
SAD FAREWELLS Our community has been devastated by the loss of a number of close members. Much loved staff member Ms Gail Berry sadly lost her long battle with cancer in January. Gail was surrounded by those close to her and was farewelled during a funeral in the Holy Family Chapel in the Doyle Centre. She was a long-term staff member at the College and held leadership positions during her time with us. We were lucky enough to be able to share time with Gail during the 2018 staff Christmas Party and end of year luncheon. We extend our sympathies to her family and friends. I would also like to extend our sympathies to the family of past student Kieran Ricketts who passed away recently. His mother Ann is a teacher at St James and all his siblings attended SJC. Kieran was farewelled during a moving service in the Holy Family Chapel last Tuesday. We also keep in our prayers and thoughts the families of Dominic Ball (Year 9) and Leevan Jiang (Year 9) who have both lost people very close to them in this last week. Our sympathies and prayers are also extended to the St James community who tragically lost a father of two of their students last week.
UNIFORM St Joseph’s College holds high expectations of all our students and staff. This not only pertains to a student’s academic application but also all other facets of College life. The uniform is seen as an important part of this and the way a student presents themselves must be to the standards outlined in various College publications. Please ensure your child is always well-attired, including their personal grooming and the jewellery that is worn.
SCHOOL GOALS This year will see the College explicitly focus on wellbeing in our Community. Our main areas of attention will be around our Catholic Identity and Mission, Learning and Teaching and Pastoral Care and how the family can support the enhancement of these areas. We are currently working with staff and the CSO to finalise our plan for 2019 and when complete, I look forward to sharing further details with you.
HSC 2018 RESULTS AND AWARDS On our College website, there is a great post outlining the wonderful achievements of a number of our 2018 Year 12 students. Please take some time to read about their results here. We look forward to welcoming back our high achieving Year 12 students (those with an ATAR above 90) very soon at an assembly. Of note is the achievement of Kyle Macaskill who attained an ATAR of 99.15. This was the second highest in the College’s history (after Kirstin Hunter 99.70) and was the fruit of an incredible amount of hard work and dedication. We must also congratulate all the College award winners who were acknowledged on the final Tuesday of the school year. It was great to see so many students rewarded for continuously striving to reach their highest potential in the areas of academics, spirituality, culture and sport. I would also like to congratulate Brock Foster who was awarded the Principal’s Honour Award. Brock will be presented with his trophy in an upcoming assembly. I hope you enjoy this first edition of the SJC Newsletter for 2019 and I look forward to witnessing great things happen through the next eleven months. Kind regards Mr Scott Thomson Principal ([email protected])

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Welcome to all new students and welcome back to all returning students for a great 2019 school year at St Joseph’s College. The College newsletter is issued fortnightly from the second week every term. As this is our main point of contact with parents, we ask that you please take the time to read this newsletter as it contains a lot of important information.
SCHOOL PHOTO DAY – WEDNESDAY 27 FEBRUARY 2019
School photographs are scheduled to be taken by advancedlife on Wednesday of Week 5, 27 February. Whilst an envelope and flyer will be distributed shortly, if possible it is our preference that ordering be completed online to reduce administration and potential security issues related to the return of cash and envelopes on photo day. Orders for packages and sibling photographs can be placed securely online at www.advancedlife.com.au using our school’s unique 9 digit advancedorder code (see
below). Portrait and group package orders are due by photography day. Should you wish to purchase a sibling photograph online, the order must be placed no later than the day before photography day. Sibling photographs will only be taken if an order has been placed. Should you have any queries concerning school photographs or online ordering, please direct them via email to [email protected]. A reminder that students will be required to wear full formal school uniform. This includes ties for the boys. All students with long hair must have it tied up. Students who have sport on the day will need to bring their sports uniform to change into.

EDROLO A letter will be issued this week to the parents of students enrolled in Year 11 and Year 12 regarding Edrolo. The College has purchased Edrolo for our Year 11 and Year 12 students. We have also purchased Edrolo for our Year 10 Accelerated Chemistry students.
What is Edrolo? Edrolo is an interactive online video and exam
simulation resource for Year 11 and 12 students. It covers several Preliminary and HSC subjects, and will provide our students with the best opportunity to perform to their potential throughout the year. You can see Edrolo in action by visiting this link: edrolo.com.au/parents/ How do students use Edrolo? Edrolo is currently used by over 700 schools and 85,000 students. Created by HSC teachers (including exam markers and textbook authors) and built in accordance with the Preliminary and HSC syllabuses, its curriculum-specific and engaging content will provide our students with a differentiated and targeted level of support as they embark on their final stage of their secondary schooling. How will our students and teachers use Edrolo? We will use Edrolo as a teaching and learning tool to further enhance what our teachers and students are doing day-to-day. The teachers at St Joseph’s College have been provided with training on how to best utilise the resource, and will guide students to use Edrolo in a range of ways across the year, including:
homework;
pre-class work;
post-class consolidation;
assessment preparation; and
exam revision. We are also actively communicating with students regarding how to access Edrolo and use it to consolidate their learning and for revision. We hope that students using Edrolo find this a valuable learning and support resource. Mrs Georgia James Leader of eLearning

THE COLLEGE SWIMMING CARNIVAL IS NEXT FRIDAY, 15 FEBRUARY 2019
(Week 3, Term 1) All students come to school as normal in their sports school uniform and get changed into their house colours at school. Everyone will walk to the Club Banora Pool, after an assembly, with the carnival starting at about 10:00am. No money is required for students to enter the pool as this cost is in their school fees. The only money your child needs to bring is for purchasing anything at the pool canteen if they wish to do so. Every student has the opportunity to earn points for their House across both Championship and Novelty Events. The swimming carnival is always a great College community event and an enjoyable day for all students and staff. Swimmers who place 1st or 2nd in a championship event are eligible to compete at the Diocesan Carnival on to be held on Thursday 7 March (Week 6) in Lismore. The NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC) Carnival is at Homebush on Friday 5 April (Week 10). Mrs Shannon Parker Coordinator of Sport
