SCHOOL VISION:

East Bentleigh Primary School provides a rich, inviting, child-focused

environment ensuring that all students feel safe and stimulated. Our students are

able to achieve their full academic, creative and social potential, equipped for the

challenges of lifelong learning. Students develop into healthy and confident

individuals, actively contributing to the world in which they live.

Hello everyone,

I hope you are managing to stay well during this very cold snap. Thank you to those

parents who are remembering to call us to advise that their child is home sick. It

makes Ann’s life much easier if she doesn’t need to follow up the whereabouts of

our students, in line with our child safe practices.

Thanks also to those parents using the kiss and go area efficiently. Another reminder

though that the staff car park is for staff only, unless it is a family with a disabled

sticker who are able to use the 2 spots allocated in the staff car park.

Facilities Update

All is in readiness for the demolition of Block B to begin. The builders are waiting on

approval for a building permit from Glen Eira Council. Once they have this piece of

paper the work will begin in earnest.

For all our soccer players who are dismayed at the construction fence going right

through one of the goals, never fear. Once the necessary machinery is on site the

goals will be relocated so you can continue to play.

School Review

We will be meeting with our reviewer Ms Olwen Horton this Friday to plan for our

Review Validation Day which will take place on Friday August 9th. More news as it

comes to hand.

Parent Opinion Survey - WE WANT OUR PARENTS TO TELL US WHAT THEY THINK!

Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The

Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education

and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is

designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of

school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the

survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement

strategies. Approximately 30 per cent of parents have been invited to participate in

this year’s survey via a snail mail letter in the post. All responses to the survey are

anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday

22rd July to Sunday 11th August.

The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can

be accessed at any convenient time within the fieldwork period on desktop

computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online survey will be available in a

range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese,

Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek.

2019 - Attitudes to School Survey

Earlier this year our Year 4, 5 and 6 students participated in this survey. Our student’s responses to this survey give us a

good indication as to how engaged our students are in their learning and school life in general. This data is part of a

suite of surveys conducted each year, which also includes the Parent Opinion Survey which 30% of our parents have

been invited to participate in, (see above) and the Staff Opinion Survey which is also being conducted now.

Please refer to the graphs below.

These results along with our student achievement data, (both NAPLAN and teacher judgements across the Victorian

Curriculum), all go to make up the Annual Report which we publish in March every year. As a whole staff, we will

interrogate this data to ensure we are meeting the needs of our students.

Congratulations - Charlie

As you know we love to share the achievements of our students. Well done to Charlie G in 5/6K

who played in the Victorian Junior State Hockey Championships on 2/7-5/7. He was one of four

players selected from Southern United to represent the Southern region in the Southern Sharks U13

team, Charlie was one of two Primary school aged boys and the youngest in the team. The

Sharks went on to win 5 of 7 games and place 5th (out of 10) across the state.

Congratulations - Sarah

I am delighted to be able to announce another piece of happy news; and that is that Sarah Boyd and her husband

Micah are expecting the birth of their first child in January 2020. The students of 2B were very excited when Sarah

shared her news with them last week. It has been a number of years since we’ve had the excitement of new life within

our staff. ‘Our cup runneth over’ at the moment with two babies on the way. It will be lovely to watch both Sarah and

Celia blossom over the next few months.

Bentleigh Farmers’ Market

A reminder that our next Bentleigh Farmers’ Market will be held this Saturday, between 8am and 12:30pm

on our school oval. The weather forecast is for a coolish morning with perhaps a light shower later in the

day, so I encourage you to come along, support our school’s fundraising efforts and grab yourself some

of the freshest produce in Victoria. Our market is a great place for parents to catch up over a coffee, a

nice cup of chai or our famous bacon and egg roll, whilst the children play without the usual weekday

running around. The whole ‘feel’ of our market is so much better when there are lots of school families in

attendance. I look forward to seeing you there.

Payments

Thank you to all of you who have attended to this so promptly so far this term. A reminder that all Term 3 fees are now

due. Please help Jane in the office by sending in any due monies. It certainly saves us a great deal in administration

time if we don’t have to chase people up personally.

Enrolments for 2020

These are now being taken - if you know of any sibling enrolments in either stream for next year would you please ask

the parents concerned to let us know in the office. Our classes are filling fast.

Until next time…………...Maria Shearn - Principal

GARDEN NEWS

Garden

Big changes happening in the garden! As you've noticed, much of the

garden, including the chooks & ducks, European garden, stone fruit

trees, compost and greenhouse are fenced off for the construction

works. Don't worry all these areas are protected from the building

works and I am coming in even weekends to care for the garden and

animals. Here's a picture of the ducks enjoying a paddle in a puddle!

Prep Playground

The prep playground has been relocated near the oval and we learnt so much in the "simple" job of

adding the soft-fall mulch underneath:

•Learning to appreciate the value of resources (this soft-fall mulch cost $2500!, it is from trees that took

time and energy to grow, we must not waste it)

•Calculating cubic metres and estimation (area X depth, what a fall zone is, how deep 25cm is roughly,

how much would a wheelbarrow load cost, a single woodchip?)

•Why is soft-fall necessary (legislation, compliance), why is it different to other mulch (processing/supply)?

Why so expensive (supply & demand)?

•Physics (how forces are transferred to small particles cushioned by air, but hard/compacted surfaces

return energy into our soft bodies)

•How to transfer mulch effectively (conserving energy, lifting and digging safely, the easiest place to dig,

the strategic planning of dumping loads, etc.) • how easy it is to get warm in mid winter when you're ac-

tive outdoors!

There's so much to learn in every garden class at school! Thanks to all who helped during garden classes,

recess and lunchtimes (including the preps and even kind families before school).

See you in the garden! Pascale
