Principal’s Report
New Website
I'm very pleased to announce that CHHS has
a brand new website format. This is the result
of many hundreds of hours of work by David
Criniti and Michael Barnes. The new site is
a huge leap forward in terms of interactive
capability with our entire community. The
new site has much greater capacity through
connections to YouTube, School Tube,
Facebook and Instagram to be immediate and
dynamic. For instance, the photos from the
Athletics’ carnival were available during the
day the carnival was held. This type of
interactivity will become a standard feature
of the site. Amongst other features the site
contains an online system for staff to share
electronic resources with students. For
example:
*Staff can create quizzes, online forms /
questionnaires for students to complete,
promoting the development of digital as well
as traditional literacies.
STRENGTH IN UNITY, EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
*Students can store files online, using the
my-ebox feature
( www.chesourl.com/myebox)
*Students can keep their own online journal,
and control whether their entries are private,
or able to be viewed by staff or students
( www.chesourl.com/journal ).
*Students can engage in discussions on
online courses conducted through the site,
and have feedback provided on their work
digitally.
*selected student groups such as the SRC will
have the capacity to add news items to the
site.
Eventually, most students will be submitting
their assessment tasks through the website. In
future, this newsletter will mostly be
distributed through our website. While no
decision in regard to this matter has been
made (we will consult widely) the website
has the capacity to share all the coloured
photos that grace the actual newsletter. What
you receive at home is only the black and
white (and expensive) version of our
colourful world. Again I'd like to thank David
and Michael for their great work in keeping
Cheso contemporary and relevant.
Term 1 Issue 2
Assessment Policy
All CHHS students and staff are bound by the
rules of our assessment policy. The current
policy was developed in conjunction with our
community and it contains the rules by which
we run our assessment and reporting. The
policy states that students in Years 7-9 will
incur penalties if they submit their tasks late
and if they fail to submit the task three days
after the due date, they will receive zero.
Students in Years 10-12 will receive zero if
the task is late. The policy also states that
whether a student has received zero for an
assessment task, that student is still
required to submit the task. This policy is
not about punishing the student but to ensure
that the student’s learning still takes place. To
help ensure that learning is at the forefront,
we are having a ‘catch-up’ day to assist those
students who failed to submit a task by giving
them time to redeem. These students will not
get any marks for their work as per the policy
but at least they will have completed some of
the learning. This catch-up day will become
part of a regular, once-a-term event at CHHS.
The day will be run in Week 11 of this term.
There will be teacher assistance available on
the day and the identified students will be
kept behind until 4:00pm to finish off their
work. Teachers have already started to
identify the students. Letters will be sent
home giving details of the process.
Parents should note that the CHHS
Assessment Policy also stipulates that
students who fail to meet the syllabus
(course) outcomes may jeopardise their
progression into the next year. As a school,
we realise that any student who does not
STRENGTH IN UNITY, EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
2
progress with the rest of their year could feel
ashamed in front of their peers. We
acknowledge by enforcing our Assessment
Policy a number of students have not
progressed into the next year. We know that
those students and their families are not
happy about this outcome. However all
students affected by the policy were offered
support and guidance to help them redeem
their overdue work. It was made clear to
every student that the consequences for not
trying to redeem could result in non-
progression.
The school makes assessment our number
one priority after student safety. Our school
has tracking and support systems to ensure
that all students meet the learning outcomes.
Support and help is readily available if your
son or daughter needs it. The current
Assessment Policy has resulted in a much
higher submission and redeeming rates for
assessment tasks. All details of all
assessment can be found through our
website and along with the previously
mentioned Assessment Policy. Please take
time to read through the policy as the rules
outlined in this document will be the basis
of any decision concerning your son’s or
daughter’s assessment.
CHHS Community Forum
I would like to again appeal to interested
parents to attend our Community Forum
meetings. The majority of our current group
of parents have served our school with
distinction but their ‘children’ have finished
Yr.12 and they will not be serving in the
Forum this year. The Community Forum is a
body that discusses school policy and gives
advice to the Principal. It is not a fund-
3
STRENGTH IN UNITY, EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION
raising body. For example, at this year’s
Forum we will be discussing the CHHS
response to the Department of Education
and Community’s BYOD (Bring your own
device) ICT policy.
This policy is a major change of direction for
the DEC. Previously under the DER program
students in Yr.9 were supplied with a laptop.
Now the DEC is allowing students to bring
their own technology to school to use in the
classroom. A number of state high schools (and
not necessarily rich ones) have requested that
parents purchase a particular laptop to be used
by the incoming Yr. 7 students. We will need to
make a considered response to this BYOD
policy. One way you can have your say is to
come along to the next meeting and hear the
discussion on how our policy will be shaped. If
you can, could you please make the time
available to attend this important meeting. It
gives you direct access to the Principal and the
school’s senior executive if you would like to
discuss any other issue. The meeting date for
the next forum in Term 1, 2014 is April 7th
in the school Library at 4:30.
2014 Athletics Carnival
On Thursday the 20th March we conducted our
Athletics Carnival at the Crest complex. A
number of school records were broken
throughout the day. The carnival was an
outstanding achievement due to two factors,
the organisation of the carnival by the PD/H/
PE faculty and secondly by the excellent
participation and behaviour of the students. I
want to personally congratulate everybody
involved for this wonderful experience. It is
days like this that make Chester Hill HS a
very special place.
Grounds Projects
There are three building projects that will
commence in the school holidays; a
performance space, an outdoor learning
space next to the school hall and an Art
‘shed’ for art making and exhibitions. This
will add to the great range of curriculum we
offer here, especially in the creative and
performing arts areas. Thank you to Mr.
Rosewall for researching and organising
these projects.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL
We held our Annual Swimming Carnival on Thursday 13th February at Birrong pool. It was a
great success, thanks largely to the terrific effort of our students who swam on the day. It was
wonderful to see so many students turn up to support their peers from the stands and cheer
them on. The day belonged to Hillary house once again.
Congratulations to all students who swam and especially our age champions and the students
who made it through to our zone swim team.

From the Cheso Mathematics Faculty
Term 1 has been a busy time for the Mathematics Faculty! Here is some
information about our expectations in Mathematics this year:
You must bring your book to every lesson and keep your notes
neat and organised.
You must bring your calculator to every lesson. Calculators
may be purchased from the school for $20. Our preference is
the CASIO fx-82 AU PLUS model. All students need a
calculator. If you cannot purchase one for any reason, please
contact Ms Blue directly.
Use a blue or black pen to write your notes and a pencil for
graphs and diagrams.
Bring a glue stick to every lesson to make sure all your
worksheets are glued into your book.
You must write your homework in your diary each lesson.
You must score at least 300 points on www.mathletics.com.au
as part of their homework each week. Use your unique
username and password to practise the topics you are
studying in class. (Years 7 – 10 and Year 11 General only)
Room E15 is open every Wednesday at lunch for students who
need to do their Mathletics homework or need
help with their Maths assignments.
CHESO NUMERACY CORNER
Each Newsletter we will give you an idea about how
to talk with your child about numeracy at home.
Talk about information used to advertise food products,
and why the company has chosen to show this
information. Does it make the food look
healthy? Is the company trying to hide
something? For example, a product
advertised as 97% fat free is low in fat, but it may have
high levels of sugar and salt. This information may not
be highlighted so you need to look at the nutrition labels
carefully. Remember “Sodium” means “salt”.

CHESO THE VOICE Week 2 Term 2
Flag Day
We are one soloists
On Flag Day we are looking for the best 4
singers in the school to sing the final song.
This is the most important part of Flag Day
and the search is on for the final 4!
If you can sing see Mrs Fields and put your
name down for Cheso The Voice Auditions.
When you audition you can sing any song
you like you can sing with a backing track
or get someone to accompany you but you
must sing on your own - not with a friend.
Auditions will take place in the Hall or
music rooms. Listen for announcements and
start practising!!!!!
CHESO THE VOICE!!! Audition to be one of the four best singers at Cheso Blind Auditions Week 2 term 2
2014 Want to perform? See Mrs Fields to put your name down to
audition.
Be one of the four best singers in the
school to sing the big Flag Day song at the
end of the ceremony.
Debating Report A good start to the new year!
The Premier’s Debating Challenge has
begun for 2014 and teams representing
Chester Hill High School have either
been chosen or will be in the upcoming
weeks. It can be quite a daunting,
nevertheless rewarding experience for
both old and new team members as the
average speaking time is 6 minutes on a
topic the team chose only an hour
earlier.
The Year 11 team has two new
members for 2014 and consists of
Aadarsh Prasad, Zainab Ashrafi,
Kristine Tran and Conor Hussey-Smith.
The Year 12 team are a tried and tested
team who have had many successes in
the past and members are Anika Synthi,
Chelsea Fisher, Timothy La and Bao
Nguyen.
Successes have already begun for both
teams who won against the mixed Year
11 and 12 teams of Sefton High School.
The first round of debates were on the
issue of Education and the topics
explored were "Schools should only
make rules for schools" and "Private
schools should be banned”.
Hopefully their successes are an
indicator of the year to come in
subsequent debates on the issues of
Media and Politics.

Safer Drivers Course What is the Safer Drivers Course (for Young Learner Drivers)?
The Safer Drivers Course is a combined theoretical and practical
course for under-25-year-old learner drivers who have completed 50
hours of log book driving hours.
PCYC, in partnership with the NSW Driver Trainers Association, has been awarded accredited
provider status for this course by Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services.
Where is PCYC delivering this course?
PCYC is rolling out this course to 44 locations across NSW.
What does it involve?
The learner must have completed 50 hours of actual on-road driving experience to be eligible for
the course. Credits gained under the 3-for-1 Scheme cannot be included in the total.
The course involves two modules:
• Module one: A three-hour facilitated group discussion on how to manage risks on the road.
This will involve a maximum of 12 participants.
• Module two: A two-hour in-vehicle coaching session to develop low-risk driving strategies.
This will involve two participants and a coach. Module two MUST be completed within one
month of the date of Module one for the participant to be eligible for the log book credit
What are the Course Learning Outcomes?
The course concentrates on developing risk management skills designed to improve the
safety of the young driver as they prepare to drive solo for the first time.
The learning outcomes of the course are:
• understand they’re at highest risk of crashing when they first move from supervised to inde-
pendent driving;
• understand they can reduce their risk of crashing by adopting safe driving behaviours, mini-
mising risk-taking and making low-risk on-road decisions;
• understand their vulnerabilities and the relationship between typically poor novice driving be-
haviours (e.g. following behaviour, gap selection, hazard perception, speed selection, distrac-
tion) and increased crash risk;
• understand and build resilience to the impact that peer influence and passenger behaviour can
have on crash risks; and
• develop strategies to address risks such as late-night driving, drugs and alcohol and general
lifestyle pressures that can lead to speeding and driver distraction and fatigue.
The cost of the course is $140.00.
Payment may be made by credit card (Visa or MasterCard) or cash, EFTPOS, credit card or
cheque in person at a club.

Under 15 Girls Basketball Knockout
The Chester Hill under 15 girls basketball
team played a very competitive Leumeah
high school in round one of the knockout
competition. In a very close game, our
girls eventually triumphed over Le-
umeah,
44-40.
Round two resulted in Chester Hill play-
ing against Cecil Hills high school. Our
skills and team play had greatly improved
since round one. Unfortunately we lost
27-12, but should be congratulated on a
terrific team effort.

Year 10 P.A.S.S. Excursion
This term year 10 P.A.S.S. were lucky
enough to spectate the GIO National
Wheelchair Rugby Championships at
Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre. The
Championships featured players from the
GOLD medal winning Australian Team
(The Steelers), from the London 2012
Paralympic Games.
The students were then treated to a guided
tour of SKODA Stadium, home of
Australia’s newest AFL team, the Greater
Western Sydney Giants. Some of the
highlights of the tour included walking a
lap of the stadium and seeing the amazing
facilities available to the Giants.
As a follow up to the excursion, Year 10
P.A.S.S. students then participated in the
Wheelchair Sports NSW Roadshow. This
allowed our students to play wheelchair
basketball in the school C.O.L.A. and
listen to an inspirational talk on road safety,
risk taking and living in a wheelchair.
The students gained an incredible insight
and understanding of physical activity for
the disabled as a result of these experiences.

Athletics Carnival
Our athletics day was held on Thursday
20 March and a fantastic day was had by
all. There were records broken, personal
bests beaten and a bevy of super heroes
and other characters roaming The Crest.
We should know shortly which house
reigns supreme for the day, but
congratulations to all competitors and
spectators for making it another
successful event.

Boys Volleyball CHS Knock-out.
9 Boys represented the school in the CHS
Knockout volleyball competition against
Punchbowl Boys High School on Thursday
the 6th of March. The boys had little time to
prepare for the game however represented
the school and themselves with pride and a
competitive spirit. Ms Poon gathered the
team and arranged the game unfortunately,
due to illness she was unable to attend the
match. The opposition was a strong and a
well- established team with many
motivating chants of congratulations and
exhilaration. The Cheso team had a loss of
3 sets to 0 however they improved as their
communication between players improved.
Ahmad Jivad was an experienced player
who took on a leadership role with his
team. Congratulations for stepping up!
With more efficient practice in an indoor
venue the boys would have given their
opposition a run for their money. It was a
privilege for me to be a part of the team.
The team included:
Andrew Lam, Anthony Ho, Ben Ly, Mahdi
Moussavi, Rashad Nadir, Jimmy Nguyen,
Bil Phong, Ali Amin and Ahmad Javid.
Mrs Lykouras
Boys Knockout Basketball
On Friday 28th February, 12 school
representatives competed in the Sydney
South West Boys Basketball knock out.
The boys were selected after a try out at
school. The game was against Fairvale HS
and held at the school. The boys were very
calm yet still nervous before the game as
they were missing their pivotal player Alex
Sesay. He had been selected to play for the
Zone Basketball team on the same day.
Alex had trained and directed the team in
the lead up training sessions. A special
thank you to Alex for his dedication to the
school and team. The boys were
outmatched with students who had played
many years of basketball. Stanley did his
best at standing in as assistant coach and
directing the team. Special thank you to the
players of the many codes of football that
helped fill in because of their height and
fitness level. The boys played very well and
started to make a comeback on the score
however time ran out and the boys had a
loss 30-35. Congratulations to the whole
team for playing as respectful sportsmen
and performing at their best.
Also on the day some representatives from
the year 11 Sports Coaching VET course
attended the knock out. Each student was
given a role in which they were required to
attend to throughout the day. Some of these
roles were distributing and collecting
uniforms, organizing and refilling drink
bottles, scoring and filming. All of the
students proved to be assets and contributed
to the smooth running of the competition.
Congratulations on their first official role to
coaching.

Dear Basketball Fans,
Our zone basketball team performed
admirably at the Zone tournament
winning all of our pool games by an
average winning margin of 20 points. The
high pressure defence that we ran was too
much for other teams to handle and the
boys 'worked hard' for each other.
Unfortuantely by the time the semifinal
match came around, the unfavourable
draw that had us competing against a
team that only played two games, as
opposed to our three, proved critical as
our boys ran out of legs.
We should all be very proud of the boys
who showed great sportsmanship and
cameraderie. Three parents attended and
they remarked how much they too
enjoyed the experience.
Thankyou for allowing me the honour of
coaching such a team. Congratulations to
the three boys: Jason Edwards of East
Hills, Fulati Yilihan and Yogan
Rajayogan, who were selected for the
regional squad.

Peer Support and Year 7 Clean-up
Peer Support is an ongoing activity that is
practised for several weeks. Year 11’s
volunteer to become Peer Support leaders.
Their duties include hosting activities in
which all year sevens are expected to
participate. This is so the year 7’s can benefit
and get the most out of each lesson. During
these few weeks, Peer Support leaders help
the newly arrived students settle in through
advice, encouragement and fun educational
games.
“I think that Peer Support is a great
opportunity!” Anthony reports.
We congratulate all Peer Support Leaders for
their effort and time, which has helped the
school in many ways.
School Publicity, SRC
SRC and Year 7 joined together to show
their community spirit by clearing the
grounds of unwanted rubbish. Many large
garbage bags were filled and the school
never looked better.
