We commence 2019 with our largest group of Year 7 students ever (over 180 and climbing) with our numbers increasing to a school of around 860. However, we will still be insisting on providing a ‘big enough to succeed, small enough to care’ philosophy, regardless of our increase in numbers. We will be commencing for all grades on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, with more information to be posted on Facebook re: locations for students to meet. Our largest group of Year 7s will meet in the Murdoch-Darling Centre. Please find in this newsletter all the info you need for links for which device to purchase for next year, uniforms, shoes and other helpful links and tips to make your year a success. We farewell a number of staff at the close of 2018 with Ms Archdall, Ms Borchardt, Mr Brace, Ms Clout and Ms Healy moving onto new schools; we wish them all the best in their future endeavours. We will, however, have 13 new staff (including two new Heads of Department and a third Deputy Principal) joining us in 2019; we look forward to commencing work with them over the break and our community meeting them in the New Year. I wish you a safe and restful summer break and look forward to seeing you in 2019. Simon Done Principal 2019 Student/Parent Information Invoices for 2019 Student Resource Scheme, camps, events, certificate courses etc. will be issued in Term 1, 2019. In readiness for this, and to remain ahead, parents and carers are welcome to continue paying towards these costs over the school holidays by means of Direct Deposit or Centrelink Payments. Please be aware that any outstanding fees from 2018 will be carried over into 2019. It is the expectation of the school that these outstanding debts are settled first. Master Teacher News – Why Read?

Period 4: Independent Reading: Read – 4 - 10

During the first ten minutes of Period 4, all students in Years7, 8 and 9 are required to read independently. Students areencouraged to bring their own reading material to school, borrow from the school or town library or download an electricbook from the digital library accessed through MaryboroughState High School. All classrooms will have a small selection ofreading material available for students who do not have theirown text.

Although research shows that students read better when theyread more, simply allocating more time for independent readingwill likely not improve a student's skills or habits unless thetime is spent with a book that can be read with fluency, comprehension, intensity, enjoyment, and a high volume ofsuccess.

Students should also be reading at home. Encourage yourchild to read at home. Daily reading will help the brain makeconnections between the written and spoken word, wideningvocabulary in the process. Adding to that benefit, vocabularyknowledge equates to masterful spelling. In fact, reading, spelling and vocabulary are critically important to a child'slifelong achievement.
