Dear Parents and Carers, I hope everybody enjoyed a very relaxing long weekend which included the Melbourne Cup Day holiday. Staff members were busy report writing on Monday and were able to do this from home. It’s a hectic time of year with many events happening across the school and the campuses. The plans for 2020 are well under way with the Learning Centre Information Nights scheduled later on in November so please come along. We were delighted to see so many parents come along to the Arts Festival which was held last Wednesday. It was a fantastic occasion and the student work that was exhibited was quite amazing. Councillor Heather Marcus opened the Art Exhibition and she was extremely complimentary to the students about their art pieces. There were also musical performances and performing arts videos and a chance to work with the Polyglots in a voice lab. A big thank you to Andrew Knox and the Specialist Team for all their hard work in organising the event. The prep transition playgroup has been happening this month and we’ve been excited to meet our new preps for next year. This is a great orientation opportunity for new parents and their children and enables staff (teachers and Allied Health) to familiarize themselves with the students and also provide support to the parents. Thanks Amy Byrne for organising this. The iPad sell off is almost finished. If your child’s iPad has recently been upgraded you have the option of purchasing the old one for $100. Eligible parents will already have received a letter regarding this and when the process is completed we may have iPads for general sale. Please be aware of the conditions of sale. Payments must be made at the school office on the main campus. As of 2020 the Department of Education and Training has advised schools of a new policy regarding the use of mobile phones at schools by students. Mobile phones will be banned from usage in classrooms and in the playgrounds in an effort to curb cyber bullying and assist with cyber safety. We will be complying with this policy and have received funding from DET to purchase secure storage for the phones. The intensive swimming program for this campus has finished and thank you to all the parents who come along to assist with this program. Although the lessons are group lessons the large number of additional people in the water made more 1:1 more possible and certainly helped with skill acquisition. Thanks Kacey Dixon for organising the program. Next week we have students in years 11 and 12 heading to Queensland on camp. A big thank you to the staff who are supporting them. It will be a great adventure and takes a lot of organisation. Marie Hayes, Principal Principal’s Newsletter 8th November 2019 20 December last day term 4 early dismissal at 1pm

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope everybody enjoyed a very relaxing long weekend which included the Melbourne Cup Day holiday.

Although the lessons

are group lessons the large number of additional people in the water made more 1:1 more possible and certainly helped with skill acquisition. Thanks Kacey Dixon for organising the program.

Next week we have students in years 11 and 12 heading to Queensland on camp. A big thank you to the staff who are supporting them. It will be a great adventure and takes a lot of organisation.

Specialist TeamLast week the Visual Arts Festival was held at Warringa Park and was a huge success. Over 220 members of the school community attended the evening of music and art and craft celebrations. Many visited earlier in the day to see musical performances by Early and Middle Years students in Norma’s music room and outside the hall.

This week is a short week with swimming finishing up on Friday. Thank you to Kacey for her organization and everyone who made it a huge success for our students

Have a great weekend, from the Specialist Team.

Epilepsy Plans: Please ensure Epilepsy plans are taken to your next Neurologist appointment and signed by the neurologist and yourselves. We like to keep these plans as current and relevant as possible. If any student has a recent seizure please contact me, so I can update their plans.

Asthma Plans: With winter upon us, please ensure your student has a current Asthma Plan. New Asthma Action Plans can be obtained from the First Aid Room or your doctor. Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holidays. So this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me.

Please note:• All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box.• If medication is being transported in students bags please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier. • If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or myself would be appreciated.

Donations: We would like to request donations of track pants, shorts Long Sleeve T-Shirts and T-shirts of all sizes. Many of our students do require additional clothing through the day. Please be mindful of this and pack additional clothes for your student.

If your student does come home with additional clothes please wash and return to the school, so that other students can benefit.

With much appreciation, Nurse Marie & Nurse Nicole

As the weather warms it’s time to revisit our SunSmart policy and to be diligent in ensuring our students have their hats and that sunscreen is applied. An extract of the school’s policy is as follows:

Clothing• Sun protective clothing is included in our school uniform/dress code. • School clothing is cool, loose fitting and made of densely woven fabric It includes shirts with collars and elbow length sleeves, longer style dresses and shorts and rash vests or t-shirts for outdoor swimming.

Hats• Students will be required to wear Cancer Council approved close-weave broad brimmed hats (at least 6 cm rigid brim) from the beginning of September to the end of April whenever they are outside.

SunscreenSchools should encourage and remind students and staff to:• Apply SPF 30 (or higher) broad spectrum, water – resistant sunscreen• Apply a generous amount to clean, dry skin at least 20 minutes before going outdoors• Re-apply sunscreen every two hours (whether or not the label tells you to do this) or more often when sweating or swimming• Check and follow the use – by date stated on the packaging• Store sunscreen below 30C• Do not rely on sunscreen alone as it does not provide full protection – combine with other sun protection measures• Develop strategies that remind students to apply sunscreen before going outdoors (e.g. reminder notices, sunscreen monitors, sunscreen buddies, sunscreen stations near entry and exit points)

RICHMOND 21 & 22 NOVEMBER 2019

Is there a better way? This workshop program has been running since 2013 to assist families and their supporters, to use a ‘Positive Behaviour Support’ approach when responding to people with disability whose behaviour can cause us stress or concern. Would you like to learn more about:

• Why some people do things which can be harmful to themselves, others or to property, or which make it hard to include them?

• What current research says are more effective ways to respond? • Why there are many different approaches to behaviour and how to decide what’s best for the

person you love or support? • How families and services can get on the same page? During the ‘Is There a Better Way?’ program we will explore:

• What is challenging behaviour? • What does the research say are the most common drivers for behaviour, and how can we use

this knowledge to help the people we support? • Which teaching methods work best? • How can we understand and support communication? • What is restrictive practice and how can we make better decisions about how it is used? • What does a good behaviour plan look like, and how can we make plans which set us up for

better long term outcomes? Note: Ideally if as many people involved in supporting the person can attend together. This program includes online learning and discussion before and after each workshop session. You will have the chance to make some plans to try out and to get support to reflect on the strategies you choose.

RICHMOND 20 NOVEMBER 2019

Understanding Challenging Behaviour

We all engage in behaviour that challenges others at times, however, behaviour is challenging when it becomes harmful or significantly impacts day-to-day life. Understanding Challenging Behaviour can help by providing information and awareness about different ways to support someone to meet their needs, lessening their necessity to behave in challenging ways. Would you like to learn more about: ✓ Why someone you love is behaving in challenging ways, and ✓ What to do if the behaviour is putting themselves or others at risk In this workshop we will explore: ✓ Common myths about challenging behaviour ✓ Why people behave in challenging ways ✓ What is Positive Behaviour Support ✓ Understanding each other when challeng-

ing behaviour is in the way ✓ What effective behaviour support plans

look like This informative and interactive workshop in-cludes the latest information about behaviour, and practical learnings from families about the different ways of understanding and thinking which are most likely to have lasting results. Participants also receive a copy of ‘What is your child’s Challenging Behaviour trying to tell you’? (endorsed by Maggie Dent) or ‘I am trying to tell you something’ (Adult guide).

Cayleys Road Music NewsAfter a year of exploring sounds and learning about recycling, up-cycling, and where young people like to hang out, we at Cayleys Road have finished the year of 25 songs!

Each year we collect our songs that have been recorded in a studio setting and present them to the world as a CD under the band name RADIO ON. However with 25 tracks, there is talk of having two releases this year - an album of pop songs and an EP of sound experiments and explorations.

This week students are voting on what they think the album should be called, but the album artwork has been decided! This colourful drawing made by Kieren has been a popular choice and we can’t wait to see it on the album artwork.

This year we have also written a few songs about what we have been learning in Respectful Relationships sessions. These songs about consent, gender identity, and regulating our emotions have turned out very well, and we look forward to sharing them with you.

Stay tuned to hear what we are calling our CDs, and how you can listen to them online.
