Principal’s Newsletter 31st August 2018 Dear Parents and Carers, It is amazing that we are already at the end of week 7. The students have had a busy term 3 so far. Term 3 has seen a number of groups across the school accessing school camp opportunities. This is an excellent experience for students to participate in activities such as obstacle courses, orienteering, bush walking and camp cooking. The experience also supports students’ independence and connectedness to their school peers. Father’s Day pie night was a great success and it was wonderful to have so many of our families come and celebrate. The SRC did amazing work organising activities and supporting the teachers to host the evening. Thank you for your support and we hope you had an enjoyable evening. The SRC also organised our Soup Hero Day, which was a fun dress up day for our Main Campus students. The focus for the day was to celebrate personal strengths, an important topic from our Respectful Relationships program. At our Bethany Road Campus, the students made Soup for the staff and students as part of the Celebration. The money raised across the school will be going to the Red Cross. Our Respectful Relationships team hosted a Student Forum this week where we had students from our Partner schools come to work together. It was a wonderful opportunity for Student Voice to be heard and supported. We had students attend from Ascot Vale, Melton, Rosamond and Jennings Street. Our own CRC and BRC students were excellent hosts and worked collaboratively with their peers from Partner Schools. We continue to work with the Department following our transport review with the aim of having direct transport to the campuses. This would be the better option for our students and would help to avoid congestion issues we are having at the school. The direct transport will involve a rerouting of all bus routes and change in pick up and drop off times. There will also be more centralised pick up and drop off spots in line with the policy of the department. We are still unsure of the timeline for these changes but intend to give parents plenty of notice about the proposed changes and work together to ensure a smooth transition. Students are preparing now for our end of term assembly, which is always, an opportunity to celebrate the great achievements and work that has been completed throughout the term. We welcome families to attend this assembly, which will be held on the last day of term. Look out for reminders in the newsletter. Caitriona Toland Acting Principal

Principal’s Newsletter 31st August 2018Dear Parents and Carers,

It is amazing that we are already at the end of week 7. The students have had a busy term 3 so far. Term 3 has seen

a number of groups across the school accessing school camp opportunities.

We continue to work with theDepartment following our transport review with the aim of having direct transport to the campuses.

Specialist TeamAs the end of Term 3 is drawing near, the Specialist Team has been busy over the last couple of weeks engaging in a wide variety of learning activities.

In Art, Andrew and Ruth have been making 2D and 3D air, land and urban habitats. With Brian, the Performing Arts students have been learning how to improvise in short scenes and respond to some fantastic marine backdrops. In Music, students have been learning about dynamics which is the volume of the sound. In particular, they have recently been learning to play instruments quietly! For the BRC School Of

Rock Music Elective, students have been working on whole class instrumental ensembles; with “chair drumming”, playing the drums, keyboard and ukulele. The WPS choir has also been preparing for the up and coming Term 3 Assembly. And finally, as this is being written, Staff and Students are looking forward to Friday 31st August, participating in the Warringa Park World Cup. For some time, students have been practicing their kicking skills in preparation for this whole school event. BUS NEWSDuring Semester 1 the school participated

in a Transport Review with the aim of having direct transport to the campuses. This would be much better option for every student and avoid all of the congestion issues we are having at the school but will involve a rerouting of all the bus routes and change in pick up and drop off times. There will also be more centralised pick up and drop off spots in line with the policy of the department. We are unsure when this might happen but we intend to give parents plenty of notice about the proposed changes and work

together to ensure a smooth transition.

NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES WESTERN MELBOURNE AREA

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a new, national approach providing individualised support and services for people with disability. The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

The NDIS commenced operation in some parts of the State on 1 July 2016 and will rollout progressively across the remainder of the State, Area by Area, until it is fully operational on 1 July 2019. Key information for Western Melbourne is as follows:

Area start date Local government areas Local Area Coordinator

1 October 2018 Hobsons Bay, Maribrynong, Melbourne, Moonee Valley, Wyndham

Brotherhood of St Laurence

Participants will transition to the NDIS based on where they live, not where they attend school.

Eligibility is focused on lifelong, functional impairment. NDIS eligibility information is available on the NDIS Access Checklist which is on the NDIS website.

There are two possible pathways for students with a disability to access the NDIS:

1. Students who are receiving specified disability programs or supports will have their details automatically provided to the NDIA. Your school will be able to advise you if your child is receiving one of these supports. These students may be contacted by the NDIA up to six months prior to their Area’s start date and invited to test their eligibility for the scheme.

2. Students who do not receive any of the specified programs or supports can directly contact either the NDIA or the NDIA Local Area Coordinator to test their eligibility. This can commence up to six months prior to their Area’s rollout date.

Further information Contact your NDIA Local Area Coordinator or the NDIA for information about the NDIS. Your school has also been provided with general information about the NDIS and what it means for students with disabilities.

Camp Medication: I review and organise all camp medication. For this reason I need all Medication Authority Forms (Green Camp Forms) to be returned as soon as possible once camp paperwork has been distributed. I request that all medication be handed into me directly via reception at least 2-3 days before camp. I encourage you to obtain extra medication close to camp and provide me the original packaging. If your child has a lot of medication please request a webster pack from your pharmacist.

Medication: As per school policy we ask parents to commence all new medication over the weekend or holidays. So this can be closely monitored for any possible allergic reactions or side effects. We appreciate your cooperation regarding this. If you have any questions regarding medication or need your child to take medication at school please contact me.

Please note: • All medication needs to be in the original packaging with child’s name, dose and time on the box. • If medication is being transported in students bags please contact the school as soon as possible, so we can remove the medication. Chaperones can secure school bags whilst on the bus but must not be used as a courier. • If at all possible directly handing over the medication at reception or myself would be appreciated.
