27 May 2015 27 May 2015 Principal’s News We begin our newsletter this week with an important message from Adopt-a-Cop, Ben Harm. Trial of new opening time for Green Zone and Stop, Drop & Go Pickup Zones As many parents are aware, traffic congestion during the peak afternoon pickup time is problematic at a large number of schools in the greater Brisbane area. Jindalee is no exception and experiences traffic congestion on a daily basis in the afternoon. One of the main problems identified is that parents arrive too early and illegally park in the drop off zones. Students are only released from school at 3pm and are not able to be picked up until they walk down and wait in the zones which can be 3:05pm or later. From Monday 1 June until Friday 5 June, the Police Beat and the School will be conducting a trial in the afternoons where both the parking zones will not open until 3:10pm. This includes the Green Zone in Burrendah Road and the Stop Drop and Go Zone on Wongaburra Street. Police officers will be present each afternoon along with school staff. As per normal, school staff will supervise the pickup zones until 3:30pm. Parents are encouraged to arrive after 3:15pm and before 3:30pm to collect their children from the zones. If this trial is successful then plans can be implemented to make it a permanent solution. If you wish to pick up your child at exactly 3pm then your only option is to park legally in surrounding streets (for example Mount Ommaney Drive) and walk down and collect them. If you fail to follow police officers’ directions, disobey parking signs, drive across double white lines or double-park you may be fined by Police. Jindalee State School and local Police believe this trial will result in a safer and better use of our existing pickup/drop off facilities. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the School Office on 3725 5777 or Police Beat officer Ben Harm on [email protected] . This should speed up the process of getting children to their cars. Children should only be getting into cars at the top of the Green and Stop, Drop & Go zones. Getting into cars further down the line stops the traffic flow as cars ahead drive off and cars are left queuing and not moving behind the car loading children. CLASS ANZAC Writer-in-ResidenceWorkshop

As you are aware, 2015 marks the centenary of the landingof Australian and New Zealand troops at Gallipoli. Our school,as part of the Centenary Learning Alliance of State Schools(CLASS), have been involved in a number of projects this yearthat commemorates this important event in Australia’s history.

Nominated students from Year 4 participated recently in a“Writer in Residence” Workshop, conducted by Donna Dyson,a highly trained and experienced teacher. Donna has taughtin primary and secondary schools across Australia, and haslectured in Middle Years Schooling at the University ofQueensland. She is a published author and a musician, andwe were very excited to have her work with us. The Year 4students thoroughly enjoyed working with Donna to improvetheir creative writing and enjoyed using ANZAC themes as astimulus for their creative writing. Here are some of the thingsthat that the students had to say about the workshop:

‘I have learnt about the sad tragedy of soldiers at war and howthey did it. I have also learnt about how to write to a solider andwhat war, ANZAC and rosemary mean. I have learnt so muchfrom Donna that I could write a ‘How to write to a soldier’ letter. We learnt about what happened in the war and we read aboutthe tough times in the war. We learnt that Mrs Dyson’s grandadwas in one of the wars and didn’t die’ – Brady P

‘When I went to the writing workshop, I learnt that it’s easy tokeep a beat in a poem and making poems in general. I alsolearnt that there’s no bright side to the war. The parts that I likedabout the writing workshop was when we got to write a letter toa real life soldier in Afghanistan and when we got to make ourown acrostic poem.’ – Tristan S 4HI

‘At the writer’s workshop I learnt about the ANZACS and whatthey did when they went to war. Also I learnt new words touse for my writing. The thing I enjoyed was learning aboutthe ANZACS and writing postcards. I thank Donna Dyson forcoming to Jindalee SS to teach us.’ – Rachel Y 4HI

‘I learnt to write poetically and what it was like in the wars. Ienjoyed introducing Donna Dyson and saying goodbye to heralso. It was also fun to read the story with her about World Warand discuss what happened at this time.’ – Ella K 4HI

Voices of ANZAC - CLASS WritingCompetitionAs part of our CLASS ANZAC projects,Centenary State High School, JamboreeHeights SS, Middle Park SS and MountOmmaney Special School students areinvited to enter a writing piece into the Voices of ANZAC CLASSWriting competition. Getting to Know … Caroline Duffus –Teacher, SEPI grew up in Brisbane and have spentmost of my life in Brisbane except forsome wonderful trips to Europe.

Before I came to Jindalee StateSchool, I have taught at SilkstoneState School for 5 years, where Ibegan my teaching career in 1988 as aPrimary Music Teacher and then Itaught at Indooroopilly State School for9 years as a Primary Music Teacher. During this time Ibecame interested in working in Special Education andcompleted a Master of Education in Learning Support andInclusive Education, which led to my transfer to JindaleeState School as a teacher in the Special Education Programin 2003. My love of music is still very strong, which is why Icontinue conduct a choir at Jindalee State School each year.

My friends and family would describe me as a little bitcrazy, due to my passion for long distance running! This isa hobby I’ve only taken up in the past few years, but I havequickly become addicted and find the challenge of training forand competing in long races very rewarding. My nickname asa runner is “Super Bunny”, as just like the Energiser Bunny Ijust keep going and going and going!

The most exciting thing to happen to me recently is Icompeted in the Buffalo Stampede Sky Running marathon inthe Easter holidays, an event held down in Victoria, startingin the alpine village of Bright and finishing up at the top of Mt

Buffalo. The 42 km course contained nearly 3000m verticalascent and 2000m of vertical descent! This was by far thetoughest event I had ever been in, but it felt so good to finishafter nearly 9 gruelling hours out on the course!

My all-time favourite movie is The Sound of Music, whichis not only set in my favourite part of the world, Austria, but also contains so many lovable classic songs. I often findmyself singing “The Hills are alive with the Sound of Music”,when I am out running on the trails, especially when I reach apanoramic mountain top!

In the weekends, I love to go for long trails runs with myhusband! There are lots of wonderful trails all over Mt Coothawhich I love exploring.

I am most proud of my twin sons. One of my sons is a veryaccomplished long distance trail runner, who inspired me totake up the sport. He is also studying Physics at University ofQld and will soon start his PhD. My other son is my inspirationfor becoming a Special Education teacher. He has Aspergers(High Functioning Autism) but is proof that family support anda good education are the keys to successful lives for theseyoung people.

If I had a motto it would be ‘Shoot for the moon. Even if youmiss, you’ll land among the stars’.

If I could change anything about the world, it wouldbe people’s attitudes to people towards disability. I am agreat believer in the term “diffability” which celebrates that allpeople are different and unique and that the focus should beon the great things a person can do, rather than focusing onwhat a person can’t do.

Someone who inspires me is Kurt Fearnley – an amazingAustralian who, despite his physical disability, is living proofof what can be achieved if you believe you can and workhard to achieve your goals. I have just reading his inspirationalbook “Pushing the limits” which details some of his amazingaccomplishments including Gold medals at the Paralympics, trekking the Kokoda trail in Papua New Guinea and beingpart of a winning Sydney to Hobart yacht crew. Kurtdescribes himself as “someone who will never stop.Someone who will never give up. Ever!”
