NAIDOC CUP 2019 Last Friday 21 June, 2019 we had 44 excited Indigenous children and 5 staff members, the most we have ever taken, go to this year’s NAIDOC CUP, where children participated in engaging Aboriginal Cultural activities. These activities included traditional art and craft, dreamtime stories, didgeridoo performances, dance and competitive Oz Tag competitions. The children were constantly on the go all day between activities and had an amazing time. The most popular activity of course, was eating all the amazing variety of food that was on offer all day. Wow! Those little ones really can eat. The Oz Tag competitions involved playing against other Indigenous teams, from over 25 schools in the district. All our teams were very competitive and all recorded wins throughout the carnival. We entered 2 senior teams and 2 junior teams. The junior “Penrith Stars” team, went on to the semi-finals and won convincingly. As a result we had our first Penrith South team ever to progress to the finals, which was very exciting. Our team played amazingly, but unfortunately were beaten by a very quick and sizable opposition on the day. Congratulations to all our children who behaved beautifully on the day and played the games and activities with great sportsmanship. I look forward to next year where we might hopefully even take a greater amount of participants. Gregory Waddell ( Aboriginal Education Coordinator )

DEBATING On Thursday 27 June, Penrith South's debating teams, the Wise Owls and the Super Stars went head to head in a debating battle royale for the 4th round of the Premier's Debating Challenge. The Wise Owls is made up of Nishika Talusani, Thomas Myers, Emey Sara Ginu and Alyra Williams (who was filling in for Kyra Russo). The Super Stars team is made up of Aaron Hart, Ella Sedwell, Pranali Gor and Skylah Riwai-Couch. The Premier's Debating Challenge is a very challenging style of debating where the teams are given the topic one hour prior to the debate and they have to prepare their arguments as a team, without any input from a teacher.

The topic for the debate was that primary schools should have compulsory organised sport for every student every lunchtime. The Super Stars were arguing for the change to be made whilst the Wise Owls were tasked with arguing against the proposal. The Super Stars made a strong case for the benefits of improved fitness and the social benefits of organised games. The Wise Owls argued that things were fine the way they were and that providing extra games was not necessary and overly burdensome for the negligible benefits it may bring. Ultimately, the Wise Owls provided the strongest arguments and they swayed the adjudicator to their way of thinking and won the debate.

It was a fantastic performance by both teams and the adjudicator's feedback was that it was one of the best she had seen this year (and they don't always say that). The debating coaches were particularly pleased with the improvements made by all team members. The debaters showed improvement in their ability to follow the debating processes they have been working hard to learn. They delivered arguments that were clear, well supported and utilised their available speaking time productively.

Both teams have a further debate in Week 10 and their final debate at home in Week 1 next term. If the Wise Owls continue on their winning streak, they may progress to the next stage of the competition and if the Super Stars stick to the form and improvement they showed this round, they will be sure to notch up a win or two in their final debates.

Paul Jones Organising Teacher

On Monday 1 July, Penrith South’s debating team ‘the Wise Owls’ headed to Ropes Crossing Public School to compete in round 3 of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The Wise Owls is made up of Nishika Talusani, Thomas Myers and Emmy Sara Ginu and Kyra Russo. The teams were given the topic one hour prior to the debate and they had to prepare their arguments as a team, without any input from a teacher.

The Wise Owls argued as the affirmative team for the topic that parents should pay their kids whenever they help out around the house. The team continued their hard work integrating feedback from previous debates and knowledge from lessons at school. They made a strong case for teaching children responsibility with money and preparing them for adulthood. It was a close debate and although the Wise Owls made great arguments, their competitors swayed the adjudicator their way.

The Wise Owls should be extremely proud of their efforts and are congratulated for an outstanding performance. They are looking forward to their final debate in week one next term. Sharnee Martin Organising Teacher
