School we expect:

✓ Attendance – our target is for 95% student attendance

✓ Reading – our target is for all students to meet the Regional Benchmarks in reading

✓ Explicit Teaching – 100% of classroom teachers implementing the Explicit Instruction Pedagogy. Dear Parents and Carers,

Great news! Murgon State School is now part of the Air Conditioning Program. We are working with the Queensland Government to cool classrooms and learning spaces throughout our school.

As a part of the 2019-20 State Budget, the Palaszczuk Government committed an additional $100 million over 4 years for the priority air conditioning program. The Queensland Government is fast-tracking $50 million in 2019-20 to deliver cooler classrooms for students and teachers. An additional 301 schools across southern Queensland have been approved to have air conditioning installed. Spaces including classrooms, libraries and staff rooms will be air conditioned under this program. As with the previous Cooler Schools Program, these schools have been selected using heat discomfort data, using a combination of the highest average apparent temperature data and the highest number of school days in Term 1 and Term 4 above 30°C.

The Department of Education is progressively rolling out air conditioning in schools across the state. Under the Cooler Schools Program, more than 3,500 classrooms in around 390 state schools in the hottest and most humid parts of the state already have air-conditioning installed.

Whilst dates for installations are yet to be confirmed we are confident that it will occur in the not too distant future.

Libby Meikle, Deputy Principal

The Department of Education is committed to ensuring every student with disability succeeds and is achieving their full potential. We are committed to inclusion where students of all abilities can:

At Murgon State School in 2020 we will continue to focus on continually improving outcomes for students with a disability and continue to strive to achieve an inclusive environment for all students. Class teachers for 2020

will be advised soon. Please find some time early in the school year to make contact with your child’s teacher and discuss your child’s learning journey in preparation for the new school year. Enjoy your holidays and I look forward to seeing all students in 2020 at Murgon State School.

2020 Enrolments and Planning Planning for 2020 class arrangements and class lists is well underway. It is important for us to have as accurate numbers as possible leading into next year. If you have family and friends who are intending to enrol at our school for Prep or any other year levels, please let them know that

applications are currently being accepted at the office. Equally, if your family is planning a move in the New Year and therefore will no longer be at Murgon State School, please contact the office to ensure class lists are as accurate as possible.

Students in Prep M are still working hard all the way to the end of the year. Last week, we started our 12 Days of Christmas program. For each of the last 12 days of school, we have a different theme for our learning. Some of the themes we have enjoyed so far have been – Elf Day, Stocking Day, Gingerbread Man Day and Snow Day. Students have been completing Literacy and Maths activities based around a different theme every day. We have been measuring how many candy canes long our books and pencils are, writing about what we would do if we were an elf and reading about where Christmas Trees originated. As this will be the final newsletter of 2019, I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you to all of my students for the amazing amount of work you have done this year. I am so very proud of all of your achievements. To the families of my Prep students – thank you for the wonderful support you have given your student. Without your amazing support, the students would not have made the wonderful gains that they have. Finally, a huge thank you to Ms Jeddah for all of the amazing work she has done with Prep M this year. Our classroom would

not be the fantastic place of learning without you.All the very best to everyone for the festive season.

Mrs Susan Mollenhauer

Prep MAs 2019 comes to a close, I’d like to say thank you for a wonderful year. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the students of 1B. I’m so proud of how far everyone has come, socially and academically and I am looking forward to seeing them around in 2020. Please encourage your child to keep coming to school next week. There are many exciting events planned, including rewards and the Christmas Concert. I hope everyone has a lovely and safe holiday!

Literacy LeaderAs we approach the holidays there are so many reading opportunities around us. Here are some examples of how you can help your child to apply their reading skills every day. 1. Let them read out the recipe you are cooking that night. 2. Read the back of the frozen meal, how long does it have to be in the

oven or microwave, how long does it take to cook? If we put the meal in at 5.30pm, when will it be ready?

3. Write out and read the shopping list for the week. 4. Read the junk mail in the letterbox. 5. Have a cosy place that you can curl up and read a picture book

together. Ask them questions about the characters and how the author has made the character good or bad?

7. Read the signs outside of shops, along the road, at bus stops, at the swimming pool and other venues.

8. Read the comics in the newspaper, the For Sale section and the advertisements.

9. Read the instructions to a board game or a game they are playing on the Internet.

10. IF YOUR CHILD HAS DIFFICULTY with reading, read with them, point to what you are reading and show them that you get

information through reading. YOU are their greatest role model!!

Prep/1 DAre we there yet? Nearly... but be sure to keep coming to school right to the end. Next week our reward days are happening. Students have worked hard and earned these rewards so please make sure they are here to enjoy them. Something very exciting happened on Monday… a package was left on our doorstep and inside was a magic elf that Santa has sent from the North Pole to check our behaviour. He reports back to Santa each night to report so that Santa can decide who makes the naughty/nice list. Already we have seen some very cheeky elf antics.Since our last newsletter we held our class teddy bear’s picnic. Fun, yummy picnic food and festivities were had by all. We were able to observe the ants creeping in to pinch our food! I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very merry Christmas. I hope you all have a wonderful and safe break. Mrs Shelton and I have loved being part of your child’s learning journey and we look

forward to seeing them around next year.Nardia de Bruyn

Throughout this week, the 2D students have looked back on some of their work and results over the past six months. They were amazed by their efforts and achievements throughout this time and could not believe how much work they had completed. Last week we created some Chocolate Brownie Christmas Trees… they were delicious! We eagerly await what we will cook in the coming days. As the year comes to an end, Miss Trish and I would like to take the opportunity to wish the 2D students and their families a safe and happy holiday. We are very proud of the individual achievements of the students over the 2019 school year.Farewell from Mrs Dyson... In the year 2003, I walked through the Murgon State School gate to begin my teaching career. Throughout this time, I have had the privilege of teaching many of the students who have entered our school gates and enjoyed building relationships with their parents/caregivers and extended family. I often remind the students in my class that I am not very old, however, considering I am currently teaching a 2nd generation of families… maybe I am!

After 17 years at Murgon State School the time has come for a change in my career and family, with a move to Meringandan State School in 2020. Thank you Murgon State School and the Murgon Community for a terrific few years. Mrs Courtney Dyson

2 DIn Media Arts, students are extending their ICT skills by using ‘Movie Maker’ to create a short audio story book. In pairs, they brainstormed and planned a short story, remembering to include an orientation, complication and resolution. They then began creating their digital illustrations using software such as Paint 3D and Tux Paint. Students are now working on recording their stories using an enthusiastic clear voice.

What a wonderful year we have had in 4R. I have thoroughly enjoyed supporting each individual student to become the best that they can be. I have seen some amazing growth and have been blown away with how far students have come this year, not only academically, but socially. I hope that everyone has a safe, enjoyable and restful break. For those who are leaving Murgon State School, I wish you all the best on your new adventures. I look forward to seeing returning families and students in 2020.Congratulations to our ABC Award recipients: Week 7: Kalib Allport, Week 8: Jeramiah Litzow

4 RWe’ve done it! The end of the year is finally upon us and what a year it has been! I am so proud of all that 3K has accomplished over the course of the year. Progress has been made in reading, Maths and The Arts. But more than that, we have learnt how to deal with conflict and how to make friends. We have learnt to accept others’ differences and celebrate the things that make us unique. Good luck to you all. Have an amazing summer and don’t be a stranger. Miss Sarah Kay

The end of the year is a busy time with students having worked hard and we now have some ‘down time’ coming up with a variety of fun activities on offer. Year 6 students are encouraged to spend all their VIVOs and any prizes delivered after next week will be kept in the office for students to pick up in the new year. We are making board games with a Christmas theme to play with our Prep buddies this week and will help the Preps complete some Christmas art and craft. We look forward to seeing all the parents of Year 6 students at Awards Ceremony next Wednesday and of course, the much anticipated Year 6 Graduation at the Murgon Golf Club. Thank you for working with me to support your child in their learning this year. Have a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for the New Year. See you in 2020 for another action-packed year.

Mrs Tracy Flavel

It’s a sad but exciting time of year for the students of 5/6S. The whole class had to say thank you and bye to their Prep buddies on Wednesday as we celebrated our last activity of the year. Our whole class has enjoyed the opportunity to work with their buddy all year and help them settle into primary school. I would like to say a massive congratulations and good luck to our Year 6 students. They are now only a couple of days away from graduating and beginning their next adventure in the exciting new world of high school. In the words of Dr Seuss ‘You have brains in your head and feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose’. Good luck and make sure to keep in touch!

The year is now coming to a close and what a year it has been!My first year of teaching has flown by and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Murgon State School staff and students for providing me with my first opportunity and making it such an enjoyable experience. We’re finishing off this week with a big splash! Looking forward to seeing you at the pool on Friday for the annual school swimming carnival. For the remaining few days, students will be finishing off their year by creating presentations focussed on water safety messages. Once these are completed students are looking forward to participating in various fun and exciting activities to close out the year. I hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable break and thank you once again for welcoming me with open arms. Work hard, but make time for your love, family and friends. Nobody remembers PowerPoint presentations on their final day!

I’m certainly going to enjoy my break surrounded by those who mean the most to me. Have fun, stay safe. See you in 2020!

Until next time

With all assessment tasks completed for the term, students have been given the opportunity in Science lessons to combine their science

knowledge with their digital skills. In the lower grades students are creating mini movies reflecting on what they have learnt in Science this year

as well as other memorable moments from 2019. Students in the upper grades have been developing their drawing skills and then using digital

technologies to convert their hand drawn pictures into a digital format and colouring them using the available software. They are then using their

digital images to create animations using Scratch. In Digital Technologies lessons, students have been exploring gadgets of the

futures and developing ideas for inventions that they think will be useful in the future.
