What is the CAASPP?

CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) is the annual, springtime series of assessments for students in grades 3-5. These tests were created specifically to gauge each student’s performance in science, mathematics and English language arts/literacy as he or she develops—grade by grade—the skills called for by the standards, including the ability to write clearly, think critically, and solve problems.

The TestsStudents in 3rd-5th grade take the following tests:

1. ELA Summative (CAT)2. ELA Performance Task 3. Math Summative (CAT)4. Math Performance Task5. Science (5th grade only)

English Learners enrolled in US schools for less than 12 months are not required to take the ELA portion of CAASPP. All students take the Math portion.

English-Language Arts Test Questions

Students are asked to interact with the text in many ways, including:

1. Select a sentence to add.2. Highlight evidence.3. Choose unneeded

information. 4. Provide short answers.

The Results

The results are mailed to you. Students will get an overall score for English Language Arts and Math. These results are in the following levels:

● Standard Not Met● Standard Nearly Met● Standard Met● Standard Exceeded

In addition, students will get scores by claim in each academic area.

In English Language Arts, students are given additional scores of Below Standard, Near Standard, or Above Standard in four areas:

● Reading ● Writing● Listening● Research/Inquiry

For Math, students receive additional scores in Concepts & Procedures, Problem Solving & Data Analysis, and Communicating Reasoning.

You will be able to compare their scores to the school average and state average.
