however, NAPLAN assessments are not intended to be pass/fail type tests.

At Pinewood Primary School we know that every year level contributes to NAPLAN along with the stories that sit

behind our students. Most importantly, we know to put NAPLAN in perspective and focus daily on continuing to

provide the very best teaching and learning possible.

I read the following statement from a school in Queensland regarding individual student NAPLAN test results.

Feeling strongly aligned with the comment, I thought I would share it with you- as principal of Pinewood PS.

“I ask that Parents and children remember that the NAPLAN test does not assess all of what makes our children

exceptional and unique. The scores obtained from this test will tell our children how well they went on the day, but

they will not tell us everything. They cannot tell us that our children have improved on something that they once

found difficult. They cannot tell us how they brighten up their teachers’ day. This test cannot tell our children how

amazingly special they are.” While NAPLAN remains of value at the school level to look at literacy and numeracy growth,

we need to ensure that this use remains school-based and appropriate.

PRINCIPAL CONFERENCE This week, May 2, 3 and 4, I will be attending a three day Principal Conference along with Mr Thomas, our Assistant Principal. During our absence, Ms Sandra McGregor and Mrs Helen Dent will be in charge of the school.

This week at OSHClub we have been introduced to a new system of signing in/out and booking for parents and OSHClub staff, Kidsoft, iCheckin and iParentPortal. It has been an exciting improvement to our program and we hope that it will make drop offs and pick ups easier for all parents and carers. As we are still learning the ins and outs of the system there are of course many questions and queries. Please do not hesitate to ask James or Maddie to assist with any concerns. The theme for this week is everything sports related. Each day children will be participating in a different type of sport and learning some new skills, and hopefully enjoying the weather outside while it lasts! Lastly, there was an extended newsletter that was handed out to parents last week which outlines routines for each room for the week. This routine will come in to effect beginning next week. If you would like a copy, let us know James, Maddie & the OSCHClub team :)

On Tuesday the 1st of May Pinewood P.S. launched the Premiers’ Reading Challenge for 2018. Michael Wagner came and talked to us about how he was inspired to write stories. He gave us a fantastic talk and shared his extremely hilarious story about his childhood. He entertained us with his great sense of humour and he made us laugh out loud. The students were also given an opportunity to buy books signed by Michael Wagner. It was great to have him encouraging us to

read and love books.

Mrs Hayden said the Technology Captains (Anish, Dhasindu and Karar) assisted brilliantly with the presentation. Also Mrs Hayden has asked me to remind you that the Library is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (Lunchtimes). There are plenty of books to borrow all around the library. On Wednesday lunchtimes, we have story time for Preps, 1s and 2s.

There the monitors read a book and give out an activity related to it. Students can also work in the library quietly and Year 6s help the little ones read. By Anish T.
