Principal’s Message Our school is alive and thriving.
Our children are environmentally
aware, and our community is a
supportive place for our young to
grow.
For the past three days, I have
been fortunate to take part in the
Principal Induction program. This
conference has provided me the opportunity to meet
with Karen Jones, the Executive Director, Aboriginal
Education and communities, where she encouraged us,
here at Huskisson to maintain our attention to inclusive
education for all students. It impressed her to hear how
our school operates and the important partnerships that
are forming in our community. I have also been lucky
enough to spend some time with Nicholas Danta -
Engagement lead, Disability Strategy Implementation
Team, to learn more about trauma-informed practice
and the recently implemented Disability Strategy. We
were addressed by The Honorable Sarah Mitchell,
Minister for Education, Mark Scott, Secretary NSW
Department of Education and Murat Dizdar, Deputy
Secretary, School Operations and Performance and we
put them on the spot to answer many difficult questions
about the enrolment policy and equity in our schools.
I have gained lots of new
skills and am super
excited to bring my
learning back to
Huskisson Public School.
By far the most
important thing that I
have learnt this week is-
"when you point a finger at someone, there are always
three fingers pointing back at you?
Shoalhaven District Basketball Tryouts Yesterday, we had 4 students from Huskisson Public
School tryout for the Shoalhaven District basketball
team. Evie, Yuki, CJ and Tyler fought hard to show off
their skills in what was a very competitive arena.
Term 1 Week 4, 21 February 2020
Sydney Street, Huskisson NSW 2540
T 02 4441 5074 F 02 4441 6220 [email protected]
There were reports of
other players making
our CJ look small, which
is difficult to even imag-
ine! Evie was successful
in making the girls team
and Tyler and CJ have
been selected as re-
serves, also being the
only Year 5 boys to try out on the day. Well done to all
students involved.
Staff Development Who said staff meetings weren’t fun? On Tuesday at our
weekly staff meeting, the ‘Tech Team’ of teachers being
Miss Loui, Mr Frost, Mrs Hanson and Mrs Jenkins pre-
sented great ideas to the staff. They demonstrated activ-
ities and opportunities in the classroom for ‘unplugged’
coding and STEAM challenges to get young minds think-
ing critically and creatively. There was a competitive re-
lay in the library where the teachers had to solve coding
problems with pens and paper! We are very fortunate
to have so many teachers skilled in a variety of areas and
that they are willing and excited to share their
knowledge with their colleagues.

In the garden….
"It was all hands on deck this week as children
were involved in an array of learning experiences,
from measuring garden plots, tasting and prepar-
ing fresh veggies, and planting seedlings. Working
in a team, communicating, and problem solving
were all positive outcomes!"

War on Waste Starting at HPS Students at Huskisson Public School have a keen interest
in the environment especially when it comes to plastic
pollution. This week our special visitor Anthony Hill from
Plastic Pollution Solutions came to our school to help
students understand how we can make our beautiful
school even more environmentally friendly.
Anthony led our Green
Team on a litter audit
of the school grounds
to first work out what
sort of waste was being
left in our playground.
Then the students
sorted the rubbish
before logging their
discoveries with the
Australian Marine
Debris Database at Tangaroa Blue.
What did the kids find out? They discovered that we have
some problems when it comes to waste and will soon
pose some solutions to their findings. The Green Team
looks forward to presenting their ideas to our school
community in the
future.
Anthony also surprised some of the other classes with
a mystery activity involving his beautiful van, Bev.
Both Tapalla and Sailors had a short informative talk
with Anthony before exploring the brilliant underwa-
ter scenes painted on his van. The students also dis-
covered some of the human impact of plastic pollu-
tion within the artwork as well.
All other classes had the opportunity to explore An-
thony’s artistic van, which opened up great conversa-
tions about the state of our oceans. Thanks Anthony
for a real hands-on learning experience. We look for-
ward to putting our solutions into action in our own
War on Waste!

Sports Report Swimming
Last Friday was our School Swimming carnival for
2020. Firstly, I would like to thank all of the parents
and family members that came along on the day to
support our students, especially those that were able
to assist as timekeepers during the carnival. Being a
smaller school we do rely on the support of our won-
derful parents to help the day to run smoothly. After
a few unexpected events in the morning we were
able to get the day back on track and be able to en-
joy a relatively relaxed carnival. Congratulations to
all of the children for their involvement during the
day. It was wonderful to see so many children com-
pete in the various events. Finally, well done to the
House Captains. They were able to organise their
relay teams and keep their competitors informed
throughout the day. The results and placing of each
race are published at the end of this week’s news-
letter with age champions and final scores to be pub-
lished next week.
The District carnival is to be held at Nowra Pools on
Thursday 27th February. This year’s District carnival
will be a lot different to what we experienced in the
past. As we have combined with Nowra to form
‘Shoalhaven PSSA’, there will obviously be more
schools involved and therefore more competitors
and greater competition to gain entry through to
Region. With over 20 schools involved parking will
be at a premium. You may wish to arrive early to
find adequate parking.
Trials
There are lots of District trials during the beginning
of the year for our students. This week we had stu-
dents attending the Basketball trials at Shoalhaven
Indoor Sports Centre. The District Soccer trials will
be held on Wednesday 26th February. Mr Frost has
selected children to attend these trials. Tennis trials
are to be held on Friday 28th February. Please in-
form Mr Vidler if your child is a regular tennis play-
er.
Yours in Sport,
Darren Vidler
