Squash victory Congratulations to Cooper Holmes, Blayne Thompson, Maanu Alexander and Dion DeMamiel who had a convincing win over Warren High School last week. Best wishes to the team as they head to Sydney this week to participate in the NSWCHS Squash Knockout Championships on Friday. Preliminary Examinations Year 11 end of course examinations commence on Friday 21st September and conclude on Tuesday 25th September. Examination timetables will be provided to students this week and will also be made available on our school website and facebook page. Students will receive an information note this week regarding attendance procedures over the three examination days. Any queries, please contact the school on 0269532122. The Tell Them From Me student survey (Term 3, 2018) I am delighted that this term our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year. The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 11th September and 26th October. Participation in the survey is entirely voluntary. A student opt-out form was sent home with students last week. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the opt-out form to school by Monday 10th September as mentioned in the note. Copies of the form and FAQs are available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents More information can also be found at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/FAQs/TTFM_Student_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and_Carers_T12018.pdf Parents/carers can also participate in the survey using the below login address. We would really appreciate your feedback and aim to improve on the number of parents/carers who responded last year. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes. Parent Tell Them From Me login: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/survey/splash/6t9qm Thank you in advance for your responses. Project Rockit Wednesday 26th September Leeton High School has been selected to receive a whole day of high impact workshops addressing bullying, hate and prejudice run by the Telstra Foundation. Students from Years 7-10 will participate in these workshops. Years 7 and 8 will learn about responsible digital citizenship, developing empathy online and cyber strategies to stand up for themselves and others. Years 9 and 10 will unpack in their session how they form judgements, labels placed on selves and others, and how they can display empathy to others online and offline. There is no cost associated with this event. Behaviour Code for Students NSW Public Schools are committed to providing safe, supportive and responsive learning environments for everyone. To support such a positive environment I have attached the NSW Department of Education’ s Behaviour Code for Students outlining expected student behaviours, action and values for your information. All students should feel safe, happy and welcome when attending school. This right is on occasion compromised by the inappropriate use of mobile phones. Inappropriate use of mobile phones can be defined as:

using it in a way that disrupts or is likely to disrupt the learning environment or interfere with the operation of the school or institute

Page 3: Principal: Mrs M Crelley Issue No: 14 Term: 3 Monday 27th ... · Heaven & Earth From the beautiful, pristine beaches of Fiji, To the harsh, hot summer heat of the Sahara. That is

bullying, intimidating or otherwise harassing others through SMS or text messaging or through photographic, video or other data transfer system available on the phone

recording of conversations, including lessons, without the knowledge and permission of the teacher or those involved in the conversation

downloading or otherwise accessing inappropriate material on the internet such as child abuse or pornographic or other offensive material

filming of fights or other criminal behaviour involving students that occur at school or the institute, during school or institute activities or while on the way to or from school or the institute

using it in a way that threatens or is likely to threaten the safety or wellbeing of any person use that is in breach of any law.

Inappropriate use of mobile phones results harms the wellbeing of our young people and for this reason attracts a harsh penalty for those who cannot use their phones responsibly and respectfully. Year 7 2019 Enrolment Forms Please return Year 7 2019 as soon as possible so we can better plan for next year. Forms are available from the school or from our website. Please contact the office if you require more information or additional enrolment documents. Breakfast @ LHS Breakfast Club operates on Tuesday and Friday mornings in front of the canteen. Thanks to our volunteer teachers and students, our wonderful canteen ladies and the Leeton IGA for their very generous support. Homework Centre Leeton High School offers a great opportunity to get on top of homework, assessment tasks and exam preparation with our Homework Centre open to all from 3.30pm-4.45pm Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Heaven & Earth

From the beautiful, pristine beaches of Fiji,

To the harsh, hot summer heat of the Sahara.

That is what the Earth holds,

There are many things new and old

Many people know the earth very well,

But people believe there is Heaven as well

Clouds as fluffy sheep

And beautiful singing angels

But I don’t think your parents would appreciate

Your funeral fee

There are many things in the world to see,

And many wonderful people to see

Skyscrapers, widespread farms and family

homes they take

Tornadoes, tsunamis and earthquakes.

Miss Neal’s Year 7 English class have been working on poetry writing this term. The boys have been encouraged to ‘use their senses’ to describe a place. All students worked incredibly hard to complete their poems, including a number of drafts to refine their work. The following three are only a small a selection of fantastic poems:

Melbourne

Trams stopping and starting.

Bright lights coming and going.

Footsteps following close behind on the smooth

sidewalk,

The rain pelting down from a dark and cloudy

sky.

Cars driving around on the rough pavement.

Doors screeching open and bells chiming.

People coughing from the car exhaust.

The smell of coffee fills the polluted air, as

people sit down and chat.

Car headlights glow brightly like a pair of yellow

eyes in the dark.

The skyscrapers towering over everything like

giants.

Bicycles weaving through the traffic like

slithering snakes.

Planes flying through the sky like giant birds.

The River

The blazing yellow sun creeping up into the sky

The shapeless clouds hanging shamelessly in the vast blue sky

Down below a serene, crystal, snake like body of water

Underneath the feet was a soft cushion of sand

Gum trees stood as tall as the Burj Khalifa

On those branches were the laughter of the kookaburras

The green leaves of stubby willows dipped lightly on the river

I hold my breath and jump into the freshwater

The touch of water gave the kiss of life

The water current beating lightly on my face

As I go back up I can hear the swish of a fishing rod

In the distance the churn of a boat pulling a skier

And the laughter of children after pushing a mate into the water

This beautiful place called the river.

Thank you to Billy Reis-Burke,

Logan Mahalm and Jayden

Broadbent.
