FROM THE PRINCIPAL
2010 Dux of Tumbarumba High School –
Lachlan Vogan
I am proud to announce that Lachlan Vogan has been awarded the Dux of Tumbarumba High School for 2010. Lachlan is currently studying at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga and is a worthy recipient of this award. Lachlan will be presented with his award at a special assembly on Tuesday 5 April 2011. On behalf of the entire school community we wish him the best in all of his future endeavours. School Uniform
I am always delighted to stand at the front gate most mornings and see the large proportion of our students wearing their school uniform with pride. We have received a great deal of positive feedback from the community about the standard of uniform our students maintain. With this in mind, I ask parents and carers to ensure they stock up on winter uniform, including the correct jackets, jumpers and pants over the coming holidays to ensure we maintain the high standard we have set in term 1. Any student who is consistently out of uniform will be offered an item from the pool of lost clothing; will lose extra-curricular privileges and may not be eligible to represent the school. Denim jeans, ugg boots and surf wear are NOT part of our uniform. Please assist us to maintain a
high standard and demonstrate pride in our school and community by supporting the wearing of correct school uniform over the coming winter months.
The Riverina Highlands Learning
Community Term 1 2011 has seen significant change and progress in the way we educate our students. This is more noticeable for our year 11 students. Apart from being one of the largest senior cohorts the school has seen for some time, they are also the first group of students to undertake their senior studies with the learning devices. This has presented both opportunities and challenges to their teachers who are working on the most effective method of delivery for these classes. The Riverina Highlands Learning Community has also been consolidated in 2011 and our year 11 students are integral to this exciting program. There are currently four classes running across three schools. I am very proud to say that we are delivering three of these classes – Biology (Mrs McGrath), Information Technology (Miss Amey) and Modern History (Mrs Crelley) – whilst Senior Science is being delivered to our students from Gundagai (Mr White).

The teachers have gained significant new skills in the authentic use of video-conferencing technology and the creation and implementation of the Moodle program that allows students to access and submit course work over a closed site, 24 hours a day. The Riverina Highlands Learning Community will be holding a series of Gifted and Talented days for students in years 5, 6, 7 and 8 (Middle School) over the next two terms and will include students from as far north as Gundagai. Congratulations to all of our dedicated teachers and support staff, our fantastic students and their parents for making the first term such a successful one. Our year 7 students have settled into their high school routine with seamless ease and the vast majority of our students come to school each and every day prepared to learn and improve their knowledge and life prospects. It is worth remembering that our school will only be as good as the people in it, so let’s ensure we choose a positive attitude everyday to ensure that Tumbarumba High School is a safe, happy and productive place to be. I would also like to take this opportunity to personally acknowledge the fantastic work undertaken by our SASS staff. Mrs Ireland and her dedicated team are an integral and essential part of our school and regularly go beyond the call to ensure reports and other documents get home on time to parents. They do a great deal of work which assists teachers and students and the majority of the time it is at the last minute. Please take the time to acknowledge the fantastic work done by these wonderful colleagues next time you call or come to the school. I look forward to seeing everyone back in term 2, after a few good sleep-ins, and wish all of our community a safe and relaxing break.
Term 1 finishes on Friday 8 April. Students
return for Term 2 on Thursday 28 April. The
office will be open on Wednesday 27 April.

ANZAC DAY CEREMONY Tumbarumba High School will once again play a role in this year’s ANZAC ceremony to commemorate the sacrifices made by our ancestors. It would be very much appreciated to have as much student and parent support and presence as we could for this solemn occasion. This year’s ANZAC day occurs towards the end of the school holidays. Full uniform will be necessary to march. Students are to meet at the War Memorial prior to the march.

KOKODA 2011
The following is taken from the Comradeship Newsletter of 2/14th Battalion. The article was written by Trevor Pryor, a former Principal of Tumbarumba Public School. “On April 8, a group of 20 plus students and leaders from Tumbarumba High (NSW) and the local Rotary Club will depart to walk the Kokoda Track. This is the third team to make the trek and last year the group was awarded a $50,000 prize for the community/school program thus ensuring its continuation. The program was the brainchild of teacher Grant Harris and Rotarian Bruce Wright, son of Lance Corporal Noel (Mick) Wright, 7 corps of Signals. They emphasise to students the historical events and the human aspects of those who fought along the Track. They have also explored local connections to the Track including many relatives who were involved. This year the group has again been divided into 4 groups named after identities connected in some way. Bisset – after Captain Stan Bisset (2/14
th Bn) -
prior to his death last year a great supporter of our project Pryor – after Sgt. Tom Pryor (2/14
th Bn) – the
father of our greatest supporter, Trevor Pryor Tongs – after Capt. Bede Tongs (3
rd Bn) – our
great friend
Muggleton – after Cpl Joseph Muggleton
2/12th
Bn) – a Tumba lad killed in action during the Battle of Buna. Many of the trekkers were in primary school when they were visited by Roy Watson and Jim Sartori who spend the day at the school talking to the students. Prior to the first group leaving in 2007, Ted and Peg Armstrong also visited. Ted almost scared a couple off making the trip and his presentation at a Rotary dinner was hailed as its best ever. The past 2 groups have been sent wishes of support from Stan Bisset and have responded by singing Danny Boy at Butch’s memorial at Isurava. Grant and Bruce have attended a Brisbane reunion and have formed a close bond with the 2/14th Battalion. Thanks to dedicated learership these youngsters will keep the history alive”.

Literacy Support
1. Simple Sentences – A simple sentence has a
subject and feature or action.
• Every sentence has at least one finite verb (a verb that has a subject). Eg The boy chased
the girl.
• Subject: “The boy”
• Action or feature: “chased the girl”
• Eg The girl went to the shop. The shop was open. The girl bought a drink.
2. Compound Sentences
• A sentence which has two or more clauses (a
group of words containing a subject and
feature or action) joined in such a way as to give each equal status as a statement.
• Eg Angus let the dog in then he pulled its
tail.
• Eg Firstly Elizabeth cooked the dinner and
then she cleaned up.
It is essential to encourage students to use
compound sentences instead of simple sentences
as they make a student’s writing more
interesting.

SPORT
Rosewood Cricket Ground was the venue for girls’ one day game between Billabong High School and Tumbarumba High School on Friday 1 April.
In the ensuing 4 weeks leading up to this match, the team grew slowly, putting into practice the new found skills they had learnt .
Paige Kynaston and Emma Alomes were elected by the team to share the responsibilities of leading the girls in the day’s play.
After losing the toss, the girls were sent into the field. Due to the time restraints put foward by the visiting side, it was decided to play a 25 over match.
Tumbarumba High School held Billabong High School side to 5 for 106 by the end of the innings.
The early breakthrough was brought about by a superb ball by Emily Waters and an equally impressive catch in first slip by Paige Kynaston.
Billabong High School fought back from the early loss to put on a 53 partnership to steady the ship before strike bowler Amylea Lawson combined with safe hands of Jakoba Alomes behind the stumps to remove their other opener.
The following over brought about great fielding effort by the girls, resulting in a great throw to the bowler’s end to have Emma Alomes whip the bails off to end the wicket of another Billabong player.
The next wicket to fall had to wait until after the drinks break before Emily Waters brought about the end of another Billabong player.
The fifth wicket to fall came with the score at 80 from a catch by Emma Alomes with Emily Waters picking up her second wicket for the day.

Billabong High School put on another 26 runs to end their innings on 106, leaving the Tumbarumba High School girls an exciting target to chase.
Requiring just over 4 runs an over the girls came into trouble with the early loss of Tamikah Hoffman with the team score at 10 and Emma Alomes a couple later with the team score at 16.
Amylea Lawson continued to plunder at the other end and combined with Paige Kynaston to put on a suberb 56 run partnership until Paige held out just after the drinks break in an effort to lift the run rate with the score at 72.
Two more quick wickets fell with Jakoba missing the ball exposing the off stump and Emily Waters the very next ball to leave India Masters to block out the hat trick ball.
The girls continued to steadily edge closer to the target only to find themselves an agonising one run short at the end of play.
The girls will have taken away a lot from the game and with a young side, the Tumbarumba High School girls’ cricket team has a very bright future.
