STUDENT COUNCIL NEWS...

It's hard to believe that we're already 7 months into the 2014-2015 school year; time

really flies when you're having fun! This month was jam-packed with super fun

activities.

On March 3rd , we had our very first Twizzler Tuesday. We went to each class with

Twizzlers and gave one to everyone as a fun mid-week surprise! It was a huge hit and a

great way to overcome some of the end of winter blahs.

Beginning on March 9th and continuing all week leading up to the March Break, we had a Name That Tune

contest. We played small clips of easy, medium and hard songs everyday on the announcements. Each class had

to guess the name of the song, write it on their answer sheet and bring it to a Student Council member. After

a 3-way tie and a tie breaker, Mme Zamprogna's class was victorious and won the title of Name That Tune

champion, bragging rights and the crown for the blue family! Thank you to M. Donato for helping us with the

music.

On Monday the 23rd, the Student Council visited each classroom. We helped each class pick a different theme

for our “Dress Up” day on Friday the 27th . As always, Jeanne Sauvé students showed amazing participation

and creativity with their wide range of ideas and costumes. The participation and enthusiasm for this event

was awesome! Overall, 91% of our student body found a creative costume to wear and show their spirit. We

chose one primary, one junior and one intermediate class as winners. Congratulations to Mme Barker's class

who dressed as babies, M. Caza's class who all dressed as M. Caza, and Mme Zamprogna's class who dressed

as their future professions. Thank you to the School Advisory Council for planning the dance-a-thon which was

not only a lot of fun and a great fundraiser, but also a great place for us to show off our costumes.

Looking into April, we have many plans. On the 8th, 9th and 10th, we will organize a fun little competition where

for 25cents, students can guess how many jelly beans are in a jar. The closest answer, without going over, will

win the jar. Later on, from the 20th to the 24th we will play “Earth Week Bingo” in the morning over the

announcements. The first class to get 5 spaces in a row on their card will win this month's bragging rights and

the crown for their family. Then, on the 24th the student council and intermediate helpers will be painting a

little flower on the faces of primary and junior students to celebrate earth week. There is a permission form

being sent home to help us to organize for this activity. “April showers bring May flowers"!

We will also be running the concession stand for the junior basketball tournaments at the end of the month

and we will be helping the School Advisory Council with the used clothing drive. We will be very busy.

We can't wait for the surprises that April and the rest of the school year will bring.

Bonne journée Jeanne Sauvé!

JOINT SCHOOL PARENT EVENING... Set aside the evening of May 6th on your calendars. The Governor

Simcoe family of schools presents local motivational speaker Dick

O'Brien to share a message of cultivating resilience in our students and

our children. Mr. O'Brien is a very engaging speaker with a very

important message to help us all provide children with the best

strategies for coping in a sometimes overwhelming world.

Presentation will take place at 6:30pm in the auditorium at

Governor Simcoe Secondary School. (http://www.theresilientjourney.com/contact.html)

Dear Parent / Guardian,

We are pleased to announce that Jeanne Sauvé has organized a clothing

collection with Bag2School to raise funds for the school. Bag2School provides free

fund raising for schools, churches, and sports organizations and, since its

inception in 2001, has helped raise over $20,000,000 in Canada, USA, Great

Britain and Holland.

By getting involved with this clothing collection you have an opportunity to help

raise funds for your school as well as helping the environment by diverting

unwanted textiles away from land fill sites. In addition, it will help raise the

students’ awareness of the benefits of the 3 “R’s”—Reuse, Recycle and Reduce.

Please donate any unwanted clothing plus any hats, belts, purses, footwear (tied in pairs please) and soft/stuffed

toys. To help raise the maximum funds for your school, please ask your relatives, neighbours and friends to go

through their closets too – a team effort makes all the difference!

Please bring your bags to Jeanne Sauvé School and enjoy a variety of food trucks hosted by the fundraising

committee to benefit our school initiatives (Playground, Technology, Sports Equipment and Subsidized

School Activities)

Date: Wednesday, April 22, 2015 (Earth Day) 3:30-6pm

Bag2School will help you to raise funds by paying your school $150/ton.

The Goal: to beat 3.75 tons!!!

DENTAL SCREENING... A Public Health registered dental hygienist is scheduled to visit our school May

5 and 8th, 2015 to provide dental screening to students in grades 2, 4, 6 and 8

and other children as required under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

During this time the registered dental hygienist will perform a visual inspection

of each child to determine his/her dental needs. Parents will be contacted if

their child requires immediate dental care. Public Health dental programs may

financially assist children who do not have access to required dental care.

Please contact the Public Health dental program for any of the following:

If you do NOT wish your child to participate in the dental screening.

If your child is not in one of the targeted grades and you would like

him/her to participate.

Call the Dental Health Information at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext.

7399 or email [email protected].

Tooth decay is the number one chronic disease of children. Tooth decay can lead to pain, infection,

difficulties eating, speech problems, self-esteem issues, decreased school attendance and poor overall health.

Niagara Region Public Health (NRPH) screens approximately 25,000 students each year in elementary

schools

38% of these students have tooth decay, which is unacceptably high

LES “ROYALS”: SPORTS CORNER

FROM THE P.Ed. DEPT... We continue to stress the importance of having indoor running shoes available

to wear for PE classes. It presents an unsafe situation when children arrive

with improper footwear. Any help in ensuring your child has proper footwear is

appreciated.

Has your child lost their Royals PE equipment? Perhaps a trip to the lost and found is in order! Shirts and

shorts that are properly labelled have a much better chance of being returned to their owner.

Right after the March break, our students in grades 2-6 were treated to special lessons in Curling right here

in our gym with the Rocks and Rings program. This fit in beautifully with the curriculum as our recent focus in

PE classes has been using aim and accuracy in target games. All students seemed to enjoy this unique

opportunity and fully took part during the sessions, learning about the rules, scoring and techniques of one of

Canada's national pastimes. Great job!

Intramurals continue to be a popular choice during the nutrition breaks, allowing students of all ages the

opportunity to get some exercise and have some fun. The intermediates are enjoying European Handball and

Page 6: Principal: Candide Sitko Vice Principal: Paula McIntee 91

have excellent games every week! It's great to see students come out and have some fun. All intermediate

students are welcome on Wednesday mornings during the first nutrition break.

Grades 1 and 2 are playing Floor Hockey, while students in grades 3-6 are enjoying some basketball. What a

great way to have some fun, in a less competitive environment.

Congratulations to the following students who have been recognized for their positive efforts and

achievements in physical education classes throughout the month of March:

Tia S. 1B, Nicholas G. 1R, Morgan B. 2M, Emma G. 2C, Ella B. 3V, Nicholas S. 3M, Kathryn C. 4N, Aaron G. 4K,

GIRLS' GYMNASTICS... Our gymnasts have been working extremely hard preparing for the big competition,

creating routines on the mat and bench as well as perfecting their vault technique. This

year's competitions will be held at Beamsville High School; the grade 7 & 8 girls

compete on the afternoon of Thursday, April 16th and our younger gymnasts (grades 3-

6) will compete on Friday, April 17th in a competition that will last the full day. Special

thanks to the dedicated parents who have been coming out to lend a hand in the gym.

Keep working hard, girls!

INTERMEDIATE BADMINTON...

Badminton has begun and due to the amazing enthusiasm shown by so many grade 7 and 8 students, a

badminton club has been formed so that students can have some fun and practice their skills before official

tryouts. Interested girls will play Tuesday during the second nutrition break, while the boys will meet on

Thursdays at the same time. Decisions for the team will be very difficult to make as over 40 students are

interested and there are only 8 spots available! This year's competition will be held on April 30th at the St.

Catharines Collegiate. Mme Vaillancourt and Mme Ritchie are looking forward to working with these

enthusiastic athletes.

JUNIOR BOYS' BASKETBALL... We are having a great season so far! These boys are working hard, practising almost

every day, and beginning to look like a strong and supportive team. Their skill and

strategy development continue to progress quickly and they are showing great

sportsmanship. We are looking forward to the rest of this month of games. Please

come out and cheer for us on Mondays and Wednesdays after school!

JUNIOR GIRLS' BASKETBALL... After a lengthy training session and try outs with over 80 girls ....congratulations to the following girls for

making it on the junior girls' basketball team. Lauryn C., Bea A., Megan B., Jillian L., Ella R., Stefani M.,

Valentina C., Ashley M., Brinnah R., Brianna L., Lauren V., and Kalyna K.. The girls have been practising very

hard and thus far have won all of their games. The girls have been reflecting on their play, acknowledging

their strengths and setting realistic goals to make improvements each game. They are a talented group of
