THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER

CHAPTER SUMMARIES

CHAPTER 1

The story is set in London, England, around 500 years ago. Two boys wereborn on the same day. One was born toroyalty and named Edward, Prince ofWales. The other, Tom Canty, was borninto a poor family and thus had to enduremany of poverty’s hardships in his sadlife on Offal Court. His dreams of beinga prince lead him to Westminster, whereharsh treatment by the castle guard bringshim to the attention of the young princeinside the gates.

When Edward and Tom get to talking, they discover that each envies the life ofthe other. To Tom, the life of royalty isblessedly free of the poverty and cruelviolence that defines his everydayexistence. To Edward, a life outside thecastle walls represents freedom from hisroyal responsibilities and confinement. They decide to swap clothes.

CHAPTER 2

Edward, in Tom’s clothes, is thrown outon the streets where he receives commonmistreatment and humiliation. When heclaims to be the prince, he is only mockedand jeered at. Even Tom’s father believesthat Edward is his son. For the first time,Edward begins to see the harsh realitiesof life outside the palace walls.

At the same time, Tom is learning thatroyal life is not what he imagained.Impersonating the prince is frightening, but when he insists he is not the trueprince, everyone in the palace worries that

the prince has lost his mind. This onlyincreases the impatient king’s desire toexecute the Great Marshall Norfolk sothat the prince’s title can be made secureby another official title.

CHAPTER 3

Tom makes many awkward mistakes intrying to act as a prince, yet he finds comfortin the friendship of the princesses. He isalso fortunate to come upon a book whichexplains the rules and customs of royalty. That night he is decked out in a goldenrobe and jewels. Young Tom is amazedand thrilled to find himself surrounded bysuch splendor and adoration.

CHAPTER 4As John Canty beats the poor prince,

Fr. Andrew rushes in to protect the boyand is dealt a fatal blow. When the princearrives at Tom’s home on Offal Courtinsisting he is royalty, Tom’s mother findsthat this seemingly familiar child doesnot have her son’s reflexes. Her doubtsincrease. Dragged off again by JohnCanty, Edward sees a crowd gathered atGuild Hall to announce that the king isdead. He knows now that he is king, butthe impostor Tom is recognized as theking instead. Edward protests at the doorthat he is the true king. A friendly strangernamed Miles Hendon protects the boyfrom the jeers of the crowd.

Inside the hall, Tom gives his first orderas the supposed king: He decrees that therule of blood is over, and the life of LordNorfolk will be spared.

CHAPTER 5

Desperate to reclaim his rightfulposition as king, poor Edward barelyhas any time to grieve for his father.Fortunately, Miles Hendon stands upfor him against John Canty. He sheltersthe boy at his rented room on LondonBridge. Hendon good-naturedly humorsthe boy as he is commanded to do thisand that by the young king. But then theboy disappears!

CHAPTER 6

When Tom awakens, he is sure that thismust all have been a dream. But then, thewords “your majesty” bring it all back.He feels captive on his first day as king. But after the young whipping-boy givesTom some pointers on royal customs, hefeels more confident. As the day goes on,Tom makes compassionate decisions andgrows more accustomed to royal ways.

CHAPTER 7

Meanwhile, Miles Hendon searchesfor his confused little friend, who hasbeen dragged off to join John Canty’sthieving band of outlaws. Edwardescapes only to face more danger andtrials. He is relieved when an old hermitbelieves he is the king. But as it turnsout, the hermit has a grudge againstEdward’s father and tries to kill the youngking. Edward is saved from the hermit, but he is thrown back with the Cantygang. Thankfully, Miles Hendon shows upjust in time to defend him when he isunjustly accused of stealing.

CHAPTER 8

More troubles! Edward is broughtbefore a judge and charged with trying tosteal a poor woman’s pig. The womansays her pig is worth less than it is to spareEdward’s life. But in reward for hercompassion she is cheated by theconstable. Happily, quick-thinking Milesuses the officer’s action to benefitEdward, and the officer agrees to lookthe other way while Edward escapes.Miles leads Edward to his family estateat Hendon Hall, where he is sure theywill find refuge. But to his horror, Milesdiscovers his father and kind brotherare both dead. His evil brother Hughhas laid claim to the estate. Worse yet—Hugh has married Miles’s true loveand cruelly enslaved her! She warns Milesto leave immediately, but it’s too late—officers arrive to take Miles and Edwardoff to prison.

CHAPTER 9

Long days pass while Miles andEdward remain imprisoned. After twokindly women who befriended Edwardare burned at the stake, Edward vows toend such injustice when he takes his placeas king. Finally, Miles and Edward aresentenced and punished. Miles offers totake a whipping for Edward, and Edwardis overcome by his noble generosity.

Homeless, Miles wants to head back toLondon to plead his case before the king.Edward joins him enthusiastically. In thecrush of bodies celebrating the comingCoronation Day, the two unfortunatelybecome separated.
