Camping opportunities in the Northern Highland American Legion State Forest (NHAL) are not limited to defined campgrounds. Other great opportunities are available.
Canoe Camping• No reservations and no fees requiredCanoe camping is available at 85 canoe campsites located on more than 20 lakes and rivers across the NHAL State Forest. To use these sites, campers must access them by watercraft. Sites are marked with yellow signs displaying a tent. No campsite reservations are accepted, and no fee is required to use these campsites. All trash must be packed out. Stays are limited to one night only with a maximum of six people allowed per campsite.
Remote Reservable Camping• Reservations and camping fees requiredRemote reservable camping is available at 17 remote reservable primitive campsites. These campsites are available on Allequash, Day, Nebish, and Clear Lakes and in the Bittersweet Wild Lakes Area. They are accessible only by water. These sites may be occupied for up to 14 nights per visit. Regular nightly camping fees apply. These sites may be reserved from May 1 through Labor Day. After Labor Day, these sites are available on a non-reservable basis. A maximum of six people are allowed per campsite.

Backcountry Camping• Reservations, permit and camping fees requiredBackcountry camping by permit is allowed anywhere in the NHAL. Permits are issued at the Clear and Crystal Lake Visitor Stations. Camping is not allowed within sight of any trail or body of water. Campsites must be at least one-half mile from your vehicle. For a complete list of backcountry camping rules, visit our website at: dnr.wi.gov. For questions and rules, contact the Clear Lake Visitor Station at 715-356-3668.
Deer Hunter Camping• Reservations, permit and camping fees requiredDeer hunter camping is offered during the nine-day gun-deer season in November. Hunter camping is allowed only along certain roads in the forest. Both tents and camper units are allowed. Hunters must obtain a permit from the Clear Lake Visitor Station to camp during the gun-deer season. For questions about deer hunter camping, contact the Clear Lake Visitor Station at 715-356-3668.
