INTRODUCTION

Thank You for purchasing a Gorman-Rupp Prime-Airer Series priming-assisted pump. Read thismanual carefully to learn how to safely maintainand service your pump. Failure to do so could re-sult in personal injury or damage to the pump.

A set of three manuals accompanies your pump.The Installation/Operation Manual contains essen-tial information on installing and operating thepump, and on making electrical connections. TheParts List Manual provides performance curve(s),a pump model cross-section drawing, and partslist for your pump.

This Maintenance and Repair Manual providestroubleshooting instructions required to properlydiagnose operational problems. Maintenance in-structions within this manual are limited to thepump hydraulic and drive components only. Formaintenance and repair of the engine or air com-pressor, consult the separate literature provided bythe manufacturers.

This manual covers high head PA Series priming-assisted models, which incorporate a 60 Seriesstraight centrifugal pump end. The pump is de-signed for high pressure distribution of non-vola-tile, non-flammable liquids that do not containlarge entrained solids. For specific service, contactyour Gorman-Rupp distributor or the Gorman-Rupp Company.

As described on the following page, this manualwill alert personnel to known procedures which re-quire special attention, to those which could dam-age equipment, and to those which could be dan-gerous to personnel. However, this manual cannotpossibly anticipate and provide detailed precau-tions for every situation that might occur duringmaintenance of the unit. Therefore, it is the respon-sibility of the owner/maintenance personnel to en-sure that only safe, established maintenance pro-cedures are used, and that any procedures not ad-dressed in this manual are performed only after es-tablishing that neither personal safety nor pump in-tegrity are compromised by such practices.

SAFETY --- SECTION AThe following information appliesthroughout this manual to Gorman-Rupp Prime Airerrrr Series pumps.This manual will alert personnel toknown procedures which require spe-cial attention, to those which coulddamage equipment, and to those whichcould be dangerous to personnel. How-ever, this manual cannot possibly antici-pate and provide detailed instructionsand precautions for every situation thatmight occur during maintenance of theunit. Therefore, it is the responsibility ofthe owner/maintenance personnel toensure that only safe, established main-tenance procedures are used, and thatany procedures not addressed in thismanual are performed only after estab-lishing that neither personal safety norpump integrity are compromised bysuch practices.

Before attempting to install, operate, orservice this pump, familiarize yourselfwith this manual, and with all other liter-ature shipped with the pump. Unfamil-iarity with all aspects of pump operationcovered in this manual could lead to de-struction of equipment, injury, or deathto personnel.

Before attempting to open or service thepump:

1. Familiarize yourself with this man-ual.

2. Shut down the engine and discon-nect the positive battery cable ortake other precautions to ensurethat the pump will remain inopera-tive.

3. Allow the pump to completely coolif overheated.

4. Check the temperature beforeopening any covers, plates, orplugs.

5. Close the suction and dischargevalves.

6. Vent the pump slowly and cau-tiously.

7. Drain the pump.

This pump is designed for high pres-sure distribution of most non-volatile,non-flammable liquids that do not con-tain large entrained solids. Do not at-tempt to pump volatile, flammable liq-uids which may damage the pump or en-danger personnel as a result of pumpfailure.

Use lifting and moving equipment ingood repair and with adequate capacityto prevent injuries to personnel or dam-age to equipment. Attach lifting equip-ment to the lifting device fitted to thepump. If chains or cable are wrappedaround the pump to lift it, make certainthat they are positioned so as not todamage the pump, and so that the loadwill be balanced. The bail is intended foruse in lifting the pump assembly only.Suction and discharge hoses and pip-ing must be removed from the pump be-fore lifting.

After the pump has been installed, makecertain that the pump and all piping or

hose connections are tight, properlysupported and secure before operation.

Do not remove plates, covers, gauges,pipe plugs, or fittings from an over-heated pump. Vapor pressure within thepump can cause parts being disen-gaged to be ejected with great force. Al-low the pump to cool before servicing.

Overheated pumps can cause severeburns and injuries, and produce explo-sive fumes. If overheating of the pumpoccurs:

1. Stop the pump immediately.2. Ventilate the area.3. Allow the pump to completely cool.4. Check the temperature and make

sure it is cool before opening anycovers, plates, gauges, or plugs.

5. Vent the pump slowly and cau-tiously.

6. Refer to instructions in the manu-als accompanying the pump be-fore restarting the pump.

Do not operate the pump without theguards in place over the rotating parts.Exposed rotating parts can catch cloth-ing, fingers, or tools, causing severe in-jury to personnel.

Use only replacement parts provided or

approved by Gorman-Rupp. Use of non-authorized parts may result in damage tothe equipment and/or injury to personneland will invalidate the warranty.

Make sure the pump is level. Lower jackstands and chock the wheels, if soequipped. Use caution when positioningthe skid-mounted unit to prevent damageto the fuel tank.

Do not operate an internal combustionengine in an explosive atmosphere.When operating an internal combustionengine in an enclosed area, make sureexhaust fumes are piped to the outside.These fumes contain carbon monoxide,a deadly gas that is colorless, tastelessand odorless.

Fuel used by internal combustion en-gines presents an extreme explosionand fire hazard. Make certain that all fuellines are securely connected and free ofleaks. Never refuel a hot or running en-gine. Avoid overfilling the fuel tank. Al-ways use the correct type of fuel.

Never tamper with the governor to gainmore power. The governor establishessafe operating limits that should not beexceeded. Refer to the pump Perfor-mance Curve for the maximum continu-ous operating speed.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

Since pump applications are seldom identical, andpump wear is directly affected by such things asthe abrasive qualities, pressure and temperatureof the liquid being pumped, this section is intendedonly to provide general recommendations andpractices for preventive maintenance. Regardlessof the application however, following a routine pre-ventive maintenance schedule will help assuretrouble-free performance and long life from yourGorman-Rupp pump. For specific questions con-cerning your application, contact your Gorman-Rupp distributor or the Gorman-Rupp Company.

Record keeping is an essential component of agood preventive maintenance program. Changesin suction and discharge gauge readings (if so

equipped) between regularly scheduled inspec-tions can indicate problems that can be correctedbefore system damage or catastrophic failure oc-curs. The appearance of wearing parts should alsobe documented at each inspection for comparisonas well. Also, if records indicate that a certain part(such as the seal) fails at approximately the sameduty cycle, the part can be checked and replacedbefore failure occurs, reducing unscheduled downtime.

For new applications, a first inspection of wearingparts at 250 hours will give insight into the wear ratefor your particular application. Subsequent inspec-tions should be performed at the intervals shownon the chart below. Critical applications should beinspected more frequently.

Review all SAFETY information in Section A.

Follow the instructions on all tags, label and de-cals attached to the pump.

Before attempting to install, operate, orservice this pump, familiarize yourselfwith this manual, and with all other liter-ature shipped with the pump. Unfamil-iarity with all aspects of operation ormaintenance could lead to destructionof equipment, injury or death to person-nel.

Use lifting and moving equipment ingood repair and with adequate capacityto prevent injuries to personnel or dam-age to equipment. If slings or chains areused to move the pump or components,make sure that the load is balanced;otherwise serious personal injury ordeath could result. The bail is intendedfor use in lifting the pump assemblyonly. Suction and discharge hoses andpiping must be removed from the pumpbefore lifting.The maintenance and repair instructions in thismanual are keyed to the sectional views and thecorresponding parts identification lists on the fol-lowing pages. Refer to the separate Parts List Man-ual for replacement parts.

pump hydraulic, priming and drive componentsonly. The pump assembly may be close-coupled toeither a factory-supplied or customer-supplied en-gine. Maintenance of engines and factory-suppliedair compressors are detailed in separate literatureprovided by the manufacturer(s).

Check TROUBLESHOOTING, Section B to deter-mine causes and remedies of pump problems.Disassemble the pump only as far as required.

Select a suitable location, preferably indoors, toperform required maintenance. All work must beperformed by qualified personnel.

Lifting

Use lifting equipment with a capacity of at leastfive times the weight of the component beinglifted. When lifting the complete unit, the liftingequipment must also be capable of lifting theweight of any options or customer-installed acces-sories. Suction and discharge hoses or pipingmust be removed before attempting to lift thepump.

For the approximate weight of your pump, refer tothe pump specification data sheet or contact yourGorman-Rupp distributor or the Gorman-RuppCompany.

PUMP AND SEAL DISASSEMBLYAND REASSEMBLY

Review all SAFETY information in Section A.

Follow the instructions on all tags, label and de-cals attached to the pump.

This pump requires little service due to its rugged,minimum-maintenance design. However, if it be-comes necessary to inspect or replace the wearingparts, follow these instructions which are keyed tothe Sectional Views (see Figures C---1, C---2 andC---3) and the corresponding Parts IdentificationLists. Maintenance and repair instructions for theengine and air compressor are covered separatelyin the specific literature supplied by the manufac-turers.

For part numbers and quantities for your specificpump, refer to the separate Parts List manual ac-companying the pump.

Many pump service functions may be performedwithout separating the pump end assembly fromthe engine. However, the priming chamber assem-bly (9, Figure C---1) and discharge check valve as-sembly (5, Figure C---1) must be removed to ser-vice most pump components. The following in-structions assume complete disassembly of thepump is required.

Before attempting to service the pump, shut downthe engine and disconnect the positive batterycable or take other precautions to ensure that it willremain inoperative. Close all valves in the suctionand discharge lines and drain the pump casing byremoving the casing drain plug (39, Figure C---2).Clean and reinstall the drain plug.

This manual will alert personnel toknown procedures which require spe-cial attention, to those which coulddamage equipment, and to those whichcould be dangerous to personnel. How-ever, this manual cannot possibly antici-pate and provide detailed instructionsand precautions for every situation thatmight occur during maintenance of the

unit. Therefore, it is the responsibility ofthe owner/maintenance personnel toensure that only safe, established main-tenance procedures are used, and thatany procedures not addressed in thismanual are performed only after estab-lishing that neither personal safety norpump integrity are compromised bysuch practices.

Before attempting to open or service thepump:

1. Familiarize yourself with this man-ual.

2. Shut down the engine and discon-nect the positive battery cable ortake other precautions to ensurethat the pump will remain inopera-tive.

3. Allow the pump to completely coolif overheated.

4. Check the temperature and makesure it is cool before opening anycovers, plates, gauges, or plugs.

5. Close the suction and dischargevalves.

6. Vent the pump slowly and cau-tiously.

7. Drain the pump.

Use lifting and moving equipment ingood repair and with adequate capacityto prevent injuries to personnel or dam-age to equipment. The bail is intendedfor use in lifting the pump assemblyonly. Suction and discharge hoses andpiping must be removed from the pumpbefore lifting. If chains or cables areused to lift pump components, makecertain that they are positioned so asnot to damage the pump, and so that theload will be balanced.

Priming Chamber Removal And Disassembly

(Figure C--1)

Disconnect both the suction piping and the air dis-charge tubing from the priming chamber assembly(9). Support the priming chamber assembly usinga sling and a suitable lifting device. Remove thehardware (4) and separate the priming chamberassembly and gasket (2) from the pump assembly(1).

(Figure C--3)

Remove the capscrews (not shown) securing thepriming chamber lid (1) to the priming chamber(18). Carefully lift the lid and valve componentsfrom the priming chamber. If the priming valve float(17) is stuck or the check valve assembly (26) isclogged, they can usually be cleaned without fur-ther disassembly.

Inspect the gasket strip (8) and, if replacement isrequired, remove the gasket and all of the oldadhesive.

To remove the float (17), disconnect the hardware(11 and 12).

To replace the valve strap (25), disengage thehardware (20, 21 and 22) and separate the guideplate (19), clamp plate (24) and valve protector (34)from the valve strap. Disengage the hardware (9and 10) and remove the valve strap.

To remove the check valve assembly (26), disen-gage the hardware (3 and 4). Remove the checkvalve assembly, gasket (6) and valve neck (2).

Inspect the check valve components. If the checkvalve (27) requires replacement, remove the hard-ware (28, 29, 31 and 33) securing the valve weights(30 and 32) to the check valve.

Discharge Check Valve Removal andDisassembly

(Figure C--1)

Support the discharge check valve assembly (5)using a sling and a suitable lifting device. Removethe hardware (6 and 7) and separate the dischargecheck valve assembly and gasket (8) from thepump assembly (1).

The flapper and gasket are the only serviceableparts of the check valve. If the flapper requires re-placement, remove the hardware securing thecover and gasket. Separate the valve cap and re-move the flapper.

Suction Cover Removal

(Figure C--2)

Remove the suction and discharge piping. Beforeattempting to service the pump, remove the pumpcasing drain plug (39) and drain the pump. Cleanand reinstall the drain plug.

Remove the nuts (42) and use the jacking screws(48) to force the suction cover (43) out of the pumpcasing. Turn the screws evenly to prevent binding.Remove the suction cover gasket (40).

Inspect the wear ring (44) for excessive wear orscoring. If replacement is required, use a small bitto drill two holes horizontally, 180_ apart, throughthe wear ring. Use a chisel or other suitable tool tocomplete the cuts through the wear ring. Use cau-tion not to damage the suction cover bore. Re-move the wear ring from the suction cover.

Impeller Removal

(Figure C--2)

Before attempting to remove the impeller (2), re-move the pipe plug (34) and drain the seal cavity.This will prevent the seal lubricant from spilling asthe impeller is removed.

To remove the impeller, secure the shaft from rotat-ing by reaching through the discharge port andtightly wedging a soft-metal bar between the vanesof the impeller.

Remove the fillister head screw (45) and impellernut (47). Install two 3/8---16 UNC by 3 inch long

capscrews in the tapped holes in the impeller anduse a suitable puller to remove the impeller fromthe shaft. Use caution when removing the impeller;tension on the seal spring will be released whenthe impeller is removed. Retain the impeller key(49). Remove the metal bar from the impellervanes.

Remove the impeller adjusting shims (4). For easeof reassembly, tie and tag the shims or measureand record their thickness.

Seal Removal and Disassembly

(Figure C--2)

Carefully remove the spring retainer and sealspring. Slide the shaft sleeve (5) and rotating por-tion of the seal assembly off the shaft as a unit. Re-move the shaft sleeve O-ring (6)

Apply oil to the sleeve and work it up under the bel-lows. Slide the rotating portion of the seal off thesleeve.

Use a pair of stiff wires with hooked ends to removethe stationary seat and O-ring from the pump cas-ing bore.

NOTEAn alternate method of removing the stationary por-tion of the seal is to remove the pump casing andthen press the seal components out of the pumpcasing from the back side.

If no further disassembly is required, refer to SealReassembly And Installation.

Pump Casing Removal

(Figure C--2)

Support the pump casing using a suitable hoistand sling and remove the hardware securing thecasing to the base.

Remove the hardware (36 and 37) securing thecasing to the intermediate (9). Separate the partsby pulling the casing straight away from the inter-mediate. Remove any leveling shims from under

the casing feet. Tie and tag the shims for ease ofreassembly. Remove the casing gasket (8).

Inspect the balance ring (38) for excessive wear orscoring. If replacement is required, use a small bitto drill two holes horizontally, 180_ apart, throughthe wear ring. Use a chisel or other suitable tool tocomplete the cuts through the wear ring. Use cau-tion not to damage the pump casing.

NOTEAn alternate method of removing the balance ring isto press the balance ring out of the pump casingfrom the back side.

Separating Intermediate and Drive AssemblyFrom Engine

(Figure C--2)

To service the bearing (12) or drive components,the intermediate must be separated from the en-gine. Support the intermediate using a suitablehoist and sling and remove the hardware (24 and25) securing the intermediate to the engine bell-housing. Separate the assemblies by pulling theintermediate straight away from the engine.

As the assemblies separate, the metal hub portionof the coupling assembly will remain on the shaft.To remove the hub from the shaft, loosen the allenhead setscrew in the hub. Slide the hub off theshaft and remove the shaft key (19).

It is not necessary to remove the elastic elementportion of the doupling from the engine flywheelunless the dcoupling must be replaced. To removethe element, disengage the hardware (22 and 23)securing it to the flywheel.

Inspect the pilot bushing (21) and, if replacement isrequired, use a suitable puller to remove it from theengine flywheel.

Shaft And Bearing Removal And Disassembly

(Figure C--2)

When the pump is properly operated and main-tained, the shaft and bearing should not requiredisassembly. Disassemble the shaft and bearingonly when there is evidence of wear or damage.

Shaft and bearing disassembly in the fieldis not recommended. These operationsshould be performed only in a properly-equipped shop by qualified personnel.

After removing the drive components from the im-peller shaft, remove the hardware (26 and 27) se-curing the oil chamber plate (28) to the intermedi-ate. Install three 3/8---16 UNC x 1---1/2 inch longjacking screws (not supplied) in the tapped holesin the plate. Turn the screws evenly in an alternat-ing sequence until the plate comes free of the inter-mediate. Remove the jacking screws.

Remove the gasket (30). Remove the O-ring (29)and, if replacement is necessary, the retaining ring(16) from the oil chamber plate.

NOTEThere are no provisions for draining the greasefrom the intermediate cavity. Place a drip pan underthe intermediate before removing the shaft andbearing.

Place a block of wood against the impeller end ofthe shaft and tap the shaft (20), bearing (12), bear-ing retainer (17) and bearing adjusting shims (31)out of the drive end of the intermediate. Be carefulnot to damage the shaft. Remove the retainer.

Press the oil seals (32) from the intermediate bore.

After removing the shaft and bearing, clean and in-spect the bearing in place as follows.

To prevent damage during removal fromthe shaft, it is recommended that the bear-ing be cleaned and inspected in place. Itis strongly recommended that the bearingbe replaced any time the shaft and bearingare removed.

Clean the intermediate, shaft and all componentparts (except the bearing) with a soft cloth soaked

in cleaning solvent. Inspect the parts for wear ordamage and replace as necessary.

Most cleaning solvents are toxic andflammable. Use them only in a well ven-tilated area free from excessive heat,sparks, and flame. Read and follow allprecautions printed on solvent contain-ers.

Clean the bearing thoroughly in fresh cleaning sol-vent. Dry the bearing with filtered compressed airand coat with light oil.

Bearings must be kept free of all dirt andforeign material. Failure to do so will great-ly shorten bearing life. Do not spin drybearings. This may scratch the balls orraces and cause premature bearing fail-ure.

Rotate the bearing by hand to check for roughnessor binding and inspect the bearing balls. If rotationis rough or the balls are discolored, replace thebearing.

The bearing tolerances provide a tight press fitonto the shaft and a snug slip fit into the intermedi-ate. Replace the bearing, shaft, or intermediate ifthe proper bearing fit is not achieved.

If bearing replacement is required, use snap ringpliers to remove the bearing retaining rings (15)from the shaft. Use an arbor (or hydraulic) press toremove the bearing from the shaft.

Shaft and Bearing Reassembly and Installation

the shaft, it is recommended that the bear-ing be cleaned and inspected in place. Itis strongly recommended that the bearingbe replaced any time the shaft and bearingare removed.

Inspect the shaft for distortion, nicks or scratchesor thread damage on the impeller end. Dress smallnicks and burrs with a fine file or emery cloth. Re-place the shaft if defective.

The bearing may be heated to ease installation. Aninduction heater, hot oil bath, electric oven, or hotplate may be used to heat the bearing. The bearingshould never be heated with a direct flame or di-rectly on a hot plate.

NOTEIf a hot oil bath is used to heat the bearing, both theoil and the container must be absolutely clean. Ifthe oil has been previously used, it must be thor-oughly filtered.

If removed, install one of the bearing retaining rings(15) in the groove closest to the drive end of theshaft.

NOTEWhen installing the bearing, position it on the shaftas indicated by the following illustrations.

Heat the bearing to a uniform temperature nohigher than 250_F (120_C), and slide the it ontothe shaft until fully seated against the retainingring. This should be done quickly, in one continu-ous motion, to prevent the bearings from coolingand sticking on the shaft.

Use caution when handling hot bear-ings to prevent burns.

After the bearing has been installed and allowed tocool, check to ensure that it has not moved out ofposition in shrinking. If movement has occurred,use a suitably sized sleeve and a press to reposi-tion the bearing.

If heating the bearing is not practical, use a suitablysized sleeve and an arbor (or hydraulic) press to in-stall the bearing on the shaft.

When installing the bearing onto the shaft,never press or hit against the outer race,balls, or ball cage. Press only on the innerrace.

After the bearing is installed on the shaft, pack thebearing by hand (or use a bearing packer if avail-able) with No. 0 lithium base grease until the bear-ing balls are thoroughly lubricated. Secure thebearing on the shaft with the inboard bearing re-taining ring (15).

Position the intermediate with the impeller enddown. Slide the shaft and assembled bearing into

the intermediate bore until the bearing seatssquarely against the bore shoulder.

If removed, install the retaining ring (16) in thegroove in the oil chamber plate (28). Install a newO-ring (29) in the groove in the oil chamber plateand lubricate it with light oil.

Install the same thickness of bearing adjustingshims (31) as previously removed. Pack the bear-ing retainer (21) approximately 1/2 full with No. 0lithium base grease and position it against thebearing. Install a new gasket (30) and position theoil chamber plate in the intermediate with thechamfered edge toward the bearing. Press the oilchamber plate into the intermediate until the retain-ing ring (16) is fully seated against the bearing. Se-cure the oil chamber plate to the intermediate withthe hardware (26 and 27).

Check the shaft endplay. Shaft endplay should bebetween .002 and .010 inch (0,05 and 0,25 mm).Add or remove shims from the bearing adjustingshim set until the correct endplay is achieved.

When installing the shaft and bearing intothe bearing bore, push against the outerrace. Never hit the balls or ball cage.

Position the intermediate with the impeller end up.Lubricate the lips of the oil seals (32) and pressthem, one at a time, into the intermediate bore withthe lips positioned as shown in Figure C---2.

Lubricate the bearing cavity as indicated in LUBRI-CATION at the end of this section.

Securing Intermediate And Drive Assembly ToEngine

(Figure C--3)

Install the shaft key (19) in the shaft keyway. Posi-tion the metal hub portion of the coupling assembly(18) onto the shaft to the dimension shown in Fig-ure C-2 and secure it by torquing the setscrew to65 ft. lbs. (780 in. lbs or 9 m. kg.).

Make certain that the metal hub portion ofthe coupling is mounted as shown in Fig-ure C---2. This is critical. If the coupling isnot properly positioned on the shaft, thecoupling parts will not fully engage.

If removed, apply ’Never-Seez’ or equivalent com-pound to the I.D. of the pilot bushing (21) and pressit into the engine flywheel until fully seated.

If the complete coupling assembly is being re-placed, apply ’Loctite Threadlocker No. 242’ orequivalent compound to the threads of the hare-dware (22 and 23) and secure the elastic elementportion of the coupling to the engine flywheel bytorquing the hardware to 50 ft. lbs. (600 in. lbs. or6,9 m. kg.).

Using a suitable lifting device and sling, positionthe assembled coupling, intermediate, shaft andbearings so the metal hub portion of the couplingseats inside the elastic element portion attached tothe engine flywheel.

Secure the intermediate to the engine bellhousingwith the previously removed hardware (24 and 25).

Pump Casing Installation

(Figure C--2)

If the balance ring (38) was removed, press the re-placement ring into the casing until it seats square-ly against the casing shoulder.

The balance ring must seat squarely in thesuction head; otherwise binding and/or ex-cessive wear will result.

NOTEThe stationary seat and O-ring for the shaft seal as-sembly may be installed in the pump casing beforethe casing is secured to the intermediate (see SealReassembly and Installation). If the stationaryseat is installed, be careful not to damage it on theshaft threads.

Install the casing gasket (8) over the studs (35).Position the pump casing over the shaft andagainst the intermediate. Secure the casing to theintermediate with the hardware (36 and 37).

Install any leveling shims used under the pumpcasing mounting feet and secure the pump casingto the base with the previously removed mountinghardware.

Seal Reassembly and Installation

(Figures C--2 and C--5)

Clean the seal cavity and shaft with a cloth soakedin fresh cleaning solvent.

Most cleaning solvents are toxic andflammable. Use them only in a well ven-tilated area free from excessive heat,sparks, and flame. Read and follow allprecautions printed on solvent contain-ers.

The seal is not normally reused because wear pat-terns on the finished faces cannot be realignedduring reassembly. This could result in premature

failure. If necessary to reuse an old seal in an emer-gency, carefully wash all metallic parts in freshcleaning solvent and allow to dry thoroughly.

Handle the seal parts with extreme care to preventdamage. Be careful not to contaminate precisionfinished faces; even fingerprints on the faces canshorten seal life. If necessary, clean the faces with anon-oil based solvent and a clean, lint-free tissue.Wipe lightly in a concentric pattern to avoidscratching the faces.

Inspect the seal components for wear, scoring,grooves, and other damage that might cause leak-age. Clean and polish the shaft sleeve, or replace itif badly worn. If any components are worn, replacethe complete seal; never mix old and new sealparts.

If a replacement seal is being used, remove it fromthe container and inspect the precision finishedfaces to ensure that they are free of any foreignmatter.

To ease installation of the seal, lubricate the sta-tionary seat O-ring, bellows and shaft sleeve withwater or a very small amount of oil, and apply adrop of light lubricating oil on the finished faces.Assemble the seal as follows, (see Figure C-5).

This seal is not designed for operation attemperatures above 160_ F (71_ C). Donot use at higher operating temperatures.

Inspect the pump casing and impeller shaft forburrs or sharp corners, and remove any that exist.

With the stationary seat O-ring lubricated andinstalled in the stationary seat, press the stationaryseat into the pump casing until it seats squarelyagainst the bore shoulder. A push tube cut from alength of plastic pipe would aid this installation.The O.D. of the pipe should be approximately thesame diameter as the O.D. of the seal spring.

NOTEIf the pump casing has not been installed, install thecasing gasket (8) over the casing studs. Positionthe casing over the shaft and against the intermedi-ate, using caution not to damage the seal stationaryseat. Secure the casing to the intermediate with the

hardware (35 and 36).

Lubricate the shaft sleeve O-ring (6) and slide itonto the shaft until it seats against the shaft shoul-der.

Use even pressure to carefully press this rotatingportion of the seal onto the lubricated sleeve (5) un-til the seal face is just flush with the chamfered endof the sleeve.

Slide the assembled sleeve and rotating portion ofthe seal onto the shaft until the seal faces contact.Continue to push the sleeve through the seal until itseats squarely against the shaft shoulder.

Install the seal spring.

Impeller Installation

The balance ring must seat squarely in thesuction head; otherwise binding and/or ex-cessive wear will result.

Inspect the impeller and replace it if cracked orbadly worn.

For maximum pump efficiency, the impeller shouldbe centered within the volute scroll.

To verify the impeller positioning, measure thepump casing and impeller as shown in Figure C-6.Use these measurements to calculate the requiredimpeller location (dimension E). Add or remove im-peller adjusting shims until dimension E is ob-tained.

Install the calculated thickness of impeller shims(4). Install the impeller key (49) and slide the impel-ler onto the shaft until fully seated. Make sure theseal spring seats squarely over the step on theback of the impeller.

Secure the shaft from rotating by reaching throughthe discharge port and tightly wedging a soft-metalbar between the vanes of the impeller. Install the O-ring (46) in the groove in the impeller nut (47) andsecure the impeller with the impeller nut and fillisterhead screw (45).

NOTEAfter the impeller has been properly positioned,check for free rotation. Correct any scraping bind-ing before further reassembly.

Suction Cover Installation

(Figure C--2)

If removed at disassembly, press the wear ring (44)into the suction cover (43) until it seats squarelyagainst the bore shoulder.

The wear ring must seat squarely in thesuction cover; otherwise binding and/orexcessive wear will result.

Install the suction cover gasket (40) on the casingstuds (41) and secure the suction cover to thepump casing with the nuts (42). Make sure thejacking screws (48) do not interfere with the suc-tion cover seating.

Discharge Check Valve Assembly AndInstallation

(Figure C--1)

The flapper and gasket are the only serviceableparts of the check valve. If the flapper requires re-placement, remove the hardware securing thecover and gasket. Separate the valve cap and re-place the flapper.

Install the valve cap gasket and secure the cap withthe previously removed hardware.

Support the discharge check valve assembly (5)using a sling and a suitable lifting device. Using thehardware (6 and 7) secure the discharge checkvalve assembly and gasket (8) to the pump assem-bly (1).

Priming Chamber Assembly And Installation

(Figure C--3)

If the check valve (26) was disassembled for re-placement, install the valve weights (30 and 32) oneither side of the check valve and secure with thehardware (28, 29, 31 and 33).

NOTEThe sealing washer (33) must be positionedagainst the head of the capscrew (31).

If the valve strap (25) was removed, install the strapprotector (34) and position the replacement strapover the valve body studs (9). Wrap the strap com-pletely around the valve body (7) and secure withthe nuts (10).

Position the strap between the guide plates (19)and clamp plate (24), and secure with the hard-ware (20, 21 and 22).

Position the valve neck (2) and gasket (6) over thehole in the top of the priming chamber lid. Positionthe check valve assembly over the studs (5) withthe large weight (32) facing up. Slide the studs upthrough the holes in the priming chamber lid andsecure with the hardware (3 and 4).

Apply “Loctite Threadlocker No. 242” or equivalentcompound to the capscrews (11). Secure the float

(17) to the valve strap bracket assembly (23) withthe hardware (11 and 12).

Apply 3-M Scotchgrip Adhesive No. 847” or equiv-alent compound to the gasket strip (8) and install itin the groove in the priming chamber lid (1).

NOTECut the lap joint where the two ends of the gasketstrip meet at a 45_ angle.

Lower the float into the priming chamber and se-cure the lid with the previously removed capscrews(not shown).

(Figure C--1)

Install the gasket (2) and use a sling and suitablelifting device to position the priming chamber as-sembly against the pump suction flange. Securethe priming chamber assembly with the nuts (4).

Reconnect both the suction piping and the air dis-charge tubing to the priming chamber assembly.

Final Pump Assembly

(Figure C--2)

Turn the shaft to make sure that the impeller is notbinding or scraping. If it does, check the installa-tion of the wear ring and balance ring, or removeadjusting shims until the impeller rotates freelywhen the pump is fully assembled.

Be sure the pump and intermediate are secure tothe engine and the base.

Install the suction and discharge lines and open allvalves. Make certain that all piping connections aretight, properly supported and secure.

Be sure the pump and engine have been properlylubricated, see LUBRICATION.

LUBRICATION(Figure C--3)

Seal Assembly

30 non-detergent oil through the hole for the airvent (10). Do not over-lubricate..

NOTEThe white reflector in the sight gauge must be posi-tioned horizontally to provide proper drainage.

When lubricating a dry seal cavity, add approxi-mately 6 quarts (5,7 L). Check the oil level regularlyand refill as required.

To ensure lubrication of the seal assembly,do not allow the oil level to drop below theline on the sight gauge.

Bearings

The intermediate was fully lubricated whenshipped from the factory. Under normalconditions,add three shots of No. 0 lithium base grease from agrease gun through the grease fitting (13) aftereach 250 hours of operation or once each month,whichever comes first. Do not over-lubricate. Over-lubrication can cause the bearing to over-heat, re-sulting in premature bearing failure.

Observe the area between the shaft andbearing retainer (17) as grease is added. Ifold grease is forced out as new grease isadded, the bearing cavity is full and shouldbe disassembled and cleaned immediate-ly.

There are no provisions in the bearing cavity todrain or flush the lubricant. The pump and interme-diate must be disassembled to completely cleanand maintain this cavity.

Under normal conditions, change the grease aftereach 5000 hours of operation, or at 12 month inter-vals, whichever comes first. Change the greasemore frequently if the pump is operated continu-ously or installed in an environment where variablehot and cold temperatures are common.

When lubricating a dry (overhauled) intermediate,fill the cavity through the lubrication fitting with ap-proximately one third pound (0,15 kg) of grease(approximately one-third full).

For cold weather operation, consult the factory or alubricant supplier for the recommended grade oflubricant.
