Year 5 English Overview wc. 22.6.20This week’s English work is based on the short film “Wing.” The activities for each day are listed below.

Day Activity

Monday Watch the film “Wing” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkHrcePAW40Take time to reflect on the story. Then answer the reflection questions about the film (See Monday activity sheet)

Tuesday Character descriptionUse the image of Wing, and label it with adjectives and noun phrases (e.g. dishevelled clothes). Use the word bank on the activity sheet to help and/or a thesaurus at home or online to enhance your vocabulary choices. Next plan and write 2 paragraphs to describe Wing, using a variety of sentence structures. Look at the recap on the activity sheet to recall how to use different sentence structures, including sentences with relative clauses and fronted adverbials. Either handwrite your description or type it up. Typed descriptions can be handed in on Teams, and handwritten descriptions can be photographed and handed in. (See Tuesday activity sheet)

Wednesday EmotionsHow does the writer make us feel sympathy for Wing? How can we tell when he is afraid? There are no words in this film, so we need to see his expression to work out how he is feeling. We are going to think of adjectives to describe his emotions at different points in the film. Pause the film at 0:35. How is he feeling? Write down 3 adjectives on the sheet. Then repeat by pausing the film at 1:51, 2:09, 3:15, 3:36 and 4:08. Can you identify each emotion and give a range of synonyms? Next create an emotion graph plotting how Wing’s emotions change during the film. Consider where each emotion will fit on a positive to negative scale. Plot each point on the graph on the sheet, then join the points to create a line graph.

Thursday Speech bubbles and dialogueOne thing the film is missing is speech. Think about what the characters might be saying or thinking. We are going to focus on the section of the film from 3:08-3:55. Watch it first and think about what the speech might be. Then complete the speech and thought bubbles on the sheet with your first ideas. Next I want you to write the dialogue up as a paragraph, using inverted commas and appropriate punctuation. Also include description of what happens in the clip,

so the reader knows what is happening. You may want to add more speech than you used on the speech bubbles – that’s great – add as much detail as you want. Read the speech punctuation reminders before you start writing. (See Thursday sheet)

Friday Poem writingWrite a poem, describing the moment when Wing and the girl fly away and are free from the crows. Perhaps describe how they both feel as they soar into the air, how the wind rushes through their hair, how their wings beat together in unison, how their teamwork is allowing them to escape, how they are thankful that they have found each other…Read the example poem to help inspire you. You may want to use some ideas from Tuesday’s word bank, and your character description.Your poem does not need to rhyme – it is up to you.
