Literacy Summer Week 2 What are we reading now? The Rainbow FishThis week will be all about writing a diary entry. We need to be able to:

Spell the days of the week accurately Understand the ingredients (features) of a

diary entry Use capital letters and full stops consistently

Day 1Days of the week’ video via YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXMofxtDPUQ

Look at the anagrams I have made. Can you unjumble the anagrams and put them in right order?

Using the days of the week in the right order, write about an imaginary week and what you did each day. You only need to write a sentence or two and you can be as imaginative as you like.

Look at my example (on page 5) for some ideas.

Day 2 Have a look at the text examples in this document.

What type of texts are these? Fiction or nonfiction? How do you know? Can you find these features in the diary entries?

Date/Day Using ‘I’ Talking about feelings Time language e.g. ‘before’ ‘yesterday’ Capital letters for names and places

What else did they notice in the diary? Tell the adult you are working with, what a diary entry should look like.

Day 3Remind yourself of the story of ‘The Rainbow Fish’ before you start writing today.

How did the Rainbow fish feel when he met the wise octopus? How did he feel afterwards?

Imagine you are the Rainbow fish and you are writing a diary entry, once you have finished talking to the octopus. What will you say about the octopus and what you were told?

Write your own diary entry using (first person) ‘I’ and those all-important capital letters and full stops.

Challenge: Can you use ‘?’ or ‘!’ when writing your diary entry.

Key words you may need: ocean, octopus, squid, worried, anxious, delighted. (Take a look at the word mat for more ideas)

Day 4Imagine you are the Rainbow fish and you are writing a diary entry, after you have shared your scales. It is the end of the story, so you’ll have a lot to say.

What happened? How did you feel?

Write your own diary entry using (first person) ‘I’ and those all-important capital letters and full stops.

Challenge: Can you use ‘?’ or ‘!’ when writing your diary entry.

Key words you may need: friends, sharing, delighted, proud etc.

Day 1 Example simple diary entries

MondayI started my diving trip and I have already had an adventure. Today we saw a school of dolphins playfully swimming near our boat. We jumped in to get a closer look and we swam with them under the water.

Yesterday was fun but today was scary. Our diving trip was cut short by a shark! We had been swimming around the coral with angel fish, when a dark shadow floated over our heads. We swam back to the boat as fast as we could!

WednesdayThis afternoon I swam all the way down to the bottom of the ocean floor. I spotted an old sunken ship below me. As looked, I found out it was an old pirate ship, but I wonder if I can find some treasure when I go back tomorrow.

ThursdayI found some treasure! Are you surprised? I found an old chest full of pirate gold. It was hidden behind some rocks in front of the pirate ship. I cannot wait to tell my friends.
