Grammar Optional Choice
Read the passage below and circle the correct word in each bracket.
Our MRT system is the fastest and most popular form of public transport in
Singapore. The travel time from Yio Chu Kang to Orchard is about 15 minutes compared to
about 40 minutes if you [take / took] a bus. When the train reaches a station, it stops for
about 20 to 30 seconds for commuters to board or alight. However, this time includes the
time needed for the train doors to open and close. [At / In] peak hours, some people will
start pushing and shoving to make sure that they manage to board or alight the train
successfully.
The trains run almost 18 hours from 5.30am to about midnight daily. During peak
hours, the train frequency is about 2 to 3 minutes and about 5 to 7 minutes during off-peak
times. [Do / Did] you know that there are more than 100 MRT stations in Singapore? Hence,
it is convenient to board a train to go to any part of Singapore. The trains are very reliable
and run on their own electrified tracks. There are no traffic jams in the MRT system and it is
not affected by the weather. When the train breaks down, sometimes shuttle services are
provided by [a / the] train company to send MRT commuters to the closest interchange.
The trains are clean and comfortable and to make sure that they remain so, littering,
eating, drinking and smoking are not allowed. The trains are also air-conditioned to keep
out the heat. It is quite safe to travel on the MRT as accidents rarely happen. However, we
must be careful at all times to [guard / guards] against pickpockets for they are able to
strike swiftly in crowded areas.
Hooray!
